Windhoek:

Windhoek was founded in the valley that was most likely the bowl of the prehistoric lake which was proven by the fact that a vegetation layer was found during the construction of the Sanlam Building, Independence Avenue. Typical bottom of the lake deposits were found at the depth of 15 metres.

Nama called Windhoek AiGams (''Hot water'' because of hot springs of Windhoek) and Herero used name Otjimuise (''Place of smoke'') but it was Nama's chief Jonker Afrikaner who gave the town its present name - '' windy corner''. There are two versions for the origin of the name: windy place (only 28% calm days a year) and name of farm Winterhoek in the Cape where Afrikaner's family originally was from.
Windhoek climate makes it a very nice place to live in: mostly dry but with a quite reliable rainfall with an average of 360 mm a year. Another reason for establishing a settlement here were several fountains with good healthy water. German colonists found morass in the Windhoek's valley that they drained later. Windhoek's altitude is around 1650 m above sea level (railway station: 1642 m, International airport: 1680-1720 m, Ausspannplatz: 1650 m). The highest mountain around the capital is Grossherzog at 2330 m above sea level (south of Windhoek on the way to Rehoboth with TV tower on top).
The settlement was founded in 1840 by Jonker Afrikaner who built his first house next to present South African High Commission (previously Berg Hotel). For a long time Windhoek was a small settlement abandoned from time to time during Nama-Herero wars. 18 October 1890 Curt von Francois reached Windhoek with 32 men and commenced construction of Alte Feste establishing permanent German presence. Shortly after small fort was erected which forms part of Schwerinsburg castle now.

Sights and buildings
Alte Feste
National Monument. The oldest building in Windhoek (1890). Built as a headquarters for Schutztruppe and later served for South African troops the building was later used as a hostel for Windhoek High School (from 1935). Became a museum in 1962.
Floods in Namibia were frequent after periods of drought and caused damage to roads and railway lines.

Christuskirche
National Monument. Built in 1910.
Elisabeth House. Storch Street. National Monument. Built as a maternity home in 1908 and named after the Duchess Elisabeth zu Mecklenburg who was the wife of the President of German Colonial company.
Windhoek Railway station (Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue)
The southern wing and central building were built in 1912. In 1929 the northern wing was added, built in the same style. The station still serves its purpose.

Artillery and Kammer Gebaude (Hugel Street)
These buildings are probably two of the earliest in Windhoek, apart from Alte Feste.
Built in mid 1890 for artillery division of Schutztruppe as an ammunition strore and weapon repair shop.
Altes Bezirksgericht (Goethe Strasse)
High Court building. Built in 1908. Remained in use till late 60's when the new High Court building was opened near Kudu Monument. Presently serves as a headquarters of Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agriculture.

City Of Windhoek.

WINDHOEK: One of the Cleanest Cities in AFRICA | 10 INTERESTING FACTS

The name ‘Windhoek’ is derived from Afrikaans meaning ‘windy corner’. Situated roughly in the center of the country, Windhoek is the largest and capital city of Namibia. This is an African country located on the Southwestern coast of Africa bordered by Angola to the North, Botswana to the East, Zambia to the Northeast, South Africa to the Southeast and South and Atlantic Ocean to the West. Windhoek is the social, political, economic and cultural center of Namibia. Its population in 2020 was 431,000 but is continually growing.

The tourist portal on the official city of Windhoek website reads; ’Windhoek is often described as one of the cleanest capitals in Africa and visitors are surprised that this city, considered to be part of deepest Africa, offers all modern amenities that conform to some of the world’s highest standards.”

When Windhoek was selected to host the Africities 2000 Summit, the Mayor of Windhoek at the time, Immanuel Ngatjizeko, positioned the city in terms of its “cleanliness” as an attribute setting Windhoek apart. It was regarded as a jewel to be jealously guarded. Its status as the “cleanest city in Africa” was peddled by City of Windhoek officials for a while until Kigali snatched the “crown” from Windhoek around 2015/2016. Arguably, this status did not come by chance, but was (and is) a result of an entrenched culture of cleanliness among people living in Windhoek.

Slogans such as ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ have really helped. Windhoek still features among the top 10 cleanest cities in Africa, coming in at number 5 after Kigali, Tunis, Port Louis and Cape Town. In March of this year, city of Windhoek councilors embarked on a clean-up campaign to reclaim its former glory. This campaign is supported by various stakeholders like Rent-a-Drum, Shoprite Namibia, Plastic Packaging, Namibia Recycling Forum, Development workshops and learners from schools in the Garoeb/Moses constituency. If everyone else gets on board, great change will definitely be observed in the city.

The National Botanic Garden of Namibia (NBGN)is situated on a hill between Klein Windhoek and the city center of Windhoek. This is the only botanic garden in the country. It is one of five subsections within the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Forestry. The mission of the Garden is to protect and promote the Namibian flora while functioning as a research, educational and recreational facility for Namibians and tourists as well.

The estate is about 12 hectares big. The larger part of the area is unlandscaped and serves as a study area for local students. A number of walking trails lead through the Garden where the most common woody plants are clearly labeled. Bird and plant lists are available at the reception. You’ll see the desert house, rockery and nursery house which are a comprehensive collection of Namibian succulents, many of which are rare and endangered.

The garden also claims to have one of the densest areas of the Windhoek Aloe. In the early 1970s a forest of quiver trees and bottle trees was planted and today, this forest is well worth the visit. Early in the year, after good rains, you can admire some of the garden lilies flowering along the Lily Walk. The garden is also home to a variety of insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. The picnic area provides the perfect spot to end your visit as you relax in the tranquil atmosphere of the garden.

The Gardens are open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every first Saturday of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. Entrance is free, save for the weekends. Just don’t litter, don’t damage any plant or plant materials and stay on the marked trails.

With the rapidly growing population of Windhoek and increased investment and development of the city, there was increased pressure on the supply of water. In 1968, the municipality built the plant making Windhoek the first city in the world to produce its own drinking water from wastewater. In 2002, the city built a new DPR plant next to the original one which is still in operation but only producing water for irrigation.

The Goreangab plant is often referred to as ‘the cradle of water reclamation’ and is believed to be the world's only pipe to pipe DPR facility. It produces purified water for over 400,000 city residents. This water is not treated again at conventional water treatment plants but goes directly into the distribution system. It is reported that no illnesses have plagued the city due to this purification system.

2023 Christmas Market in Zoo Park in Windhoek, Namibia, southern Africa

Video of Windhoek City Christmas Market in Namibia's capital on 08 December 2023.

#Christmas #Windhoek #Namibia

Vendors came and joined the city of Windhoek Christmas Market in Zoo Park on 08 December 2023.

The City of Windhoek (CoW) has invited the public to the Windhoek Market on 08 to 10 December 2023. The market is located along Independence Avenue between Daniel Munamava and Fidel Castro Streets and in the Zoo Park. The event took place from 9:00 to 22:00.

The City said the theme for this year is ‘Christmas in the Zoo Park’ and the market had vendors and corporates strategically placed along Independence Avenue, to complement existing arts and craft vendors. “Live entertainment, exhibitions, vendor stands and a wide variety of activities will be provided throughout the two days, supplemented by street performers around the inner city. Opportunity is provided to companies to showcase and display items such as vehicles, their services, and products, as well as engage with clients,” they added.

They said residents are to take a break in the food court to enjoy delicious cuisine and a variety of beverages that will be offered by a diverse number of vendors. “Participants will be offered to host informative talks, and demonstrations and promote healthy lifestyle activities for adults and children alike,” they said.

CoW emphasized that the ‘Christmas in the Zoo Park’, is planned to coincide with the annual switching on of the city’s Christmas Street Lights by His Worship the Mayor of Windhoek, Joseph Uapingene. “Offering a show of Christmas lights at night, offering everyone an escape from the normal quiet evening affording the chance to discover creations, creative gift ideas, and delicious treats locally made with Namibian pride,” they explained

They said the Market aims to contribute and promote a festive and vibrant atmosphere along the CBD, enticing residents and visitors to spend more time in the CBD after hours, buy goods and services, and interact socially and festively. “The objective of the Market is also to provide business opportunities to both formal and small businesses, and individual trading in Christmas themed and related products, particularly locally produced and handmade products,” they informed.

“All are welcome to join in the festivities, which will bring residents together in the heart of the city promote inclusivity, and economic vibrancy, and usher in a festive mood into the capital. We love Windhoek, do you,” concluded the City.

Old town Windhoek city center walk in Namibia, southern Africa

OLD TOWN WINDHOEK CITY CENTER WALK IN NAMIBIA | СТОЛИЦА НАМИБИИ ИСТОРИЧЕСКИЙ ЦЕНТРАЛЬНЫЙ РАЙОН

Windhoek:

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area, at around 1,750 metres above sea level, almost exactly at the country's geographical centre. The population of Windhoek in 2020 was 431,000 which is growing continually due to an influx from all over Namibia.
A request by merchants from Lüderitzbucht resulted in the declaration of a German protectorate over what was called German South West Africa, which is today Namibia in 1884. The borders of the German colony were determined in 1890 and Germany sent a protective corps, the Schutztruppe under Major Curt von François, to maintain order. Von François stationed his garrison at Windhoek, which was strategically situated as a buffer between the Nama and Herero peoples. The twelve strong springs provided water for the cultivation of produce and grains.

Colonial Windhoek was founded on 18 October 1890, when von François fixed the foundation stone of the fort, which is now known as the Alte Feste (Old Fortress). After 1907, development accelerated as indigenous people migrated from the countryside to the growing town to seek work. More European settlers arrived from Germany and South Africa. Businesses were erected on Kaiser Street (presently Independence Avenue), and along the dominant mountain ridge over the city. At this time, Windhoek's three castles, Heinitzburg, Sanderburg, and Schwerinsburg, were built.

The Christuskirche is a beautiful example of the ornate German neo-Romanic/art nouveau architecture of the time. It is designed around the idea of a rectangular basilica with a 24m spire, rounded end and 2 aisles.
The walls are made of quartz sandstone brought in from the Avis Dam area, and the portal is crafted from Italian Carrara marble. A part of the roof and the bronze bells were imported from Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm II donated the stained lead glass windows in the sanctuary.

Likewise, the German community of Windhoek contributed immensely to the project, donating further stained windows, the altar bible, the altarpiece and decorative plaques for the building.

Ten-man House (Tienmannhaus)
The ten-man house was built in Windhoek to accommodate ten single bachelors who worked for German colonial government. It was commissioned and constructed between 1906 and 1907. The foundations are of clay and the walls are of unbaked clay. The building still has its original corrugated iron roof.
