Exploring CHRISTCHURCH by foot and tram | South Island, New Zealand

This is the first vlog from our 7 part South Island series. We landed in Christchurch and wasted no time in getting some delicious food as well as touring around the city the next day via a heritage hop-on hop-off tram.

Our first meal was from a fantastic Cambodian restaurant that we came across the last time we were in Christchurch. Incredibly tasty food and friendly service, Khmer Angkor Restaurant is definitely a must-try in Christchurch. They're located in the EntX Christchurch Central building.

Khmer Angkor Restaurant
Address: 617 Colombo Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011

UPDATE 3 Feb 2022: Khmer Angkor have announced they'll be temporarily closing while they relocate within the EntX building. Keep a lookout on their Facebook for further updates

The Christchurch Tram is a unique and great way to explore the city. It's an all day hop-on, hop-off sightseeing experience with live onboard commentary from the knowledgeable drivers too. Kids get to ride free (up to 3 kids per adult) and for all the details about the tram and route, check out their website:

and check out Klook to keep an eye for specials (NB: prices do change occasionally on Klook)

The second food stop on our Christchurch trip was a great little Indonesian food stall located inside Riverside Market. Lots of great options on their menu including vegetarian and vegan dishes too.

Indo Tempeh House
Address: 96 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011

Christchurch is the largest city in South Island New Zealand with a population of around 390,000 people. It is one of the world’s most unique destinations, combining urban regeneration and innovation with heritage, culture and exhilarating activity. This year New Zealand marks Christchurch earthquake 10th anniversary. On Tuesday 22 February 2011 Christchurch was badly damaged by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake, which killed 185 people and injured several thousand. Many heritage buildings were heavily damaged, over a quarter of the buildings in the central business district were demolished. Christchurch rebuild is still working in progress and aiming to develop Christchurch into an innovative and modern community.

New Zealand border opened to Australia on 19 April which made the quarantine free travel finally happen between two nations. We hope NZ will open to more countries soon and travel will be back to normal.

New Zealand's most scenic rail journey | The TranzAlpine | Christchurch to Greymouth

The TranzAlpine is New Zealand's most famous train, crossing the Southern Alps from Christchurch to the West Coast. Find out whether the train lives up to its venerable reputation.

In this video, I'll show you what the Scenic Class carriages are like, check out the food and drink options from the onboard cafe and enjoy the views from the open-air viewing car. Of course, the scenery is the main act including a spectacular river gorge, towering viaducts, high mountain plains, braided rivers and pristine mountain lakes, en route to the West Coast.

The TranzAlpine is widely considered one of the world's great train journeys, covering 230 kilometres and taking just under 5 hours.

Starting in Christchurch, the journey crosses the expansive Canterbury Plains on the South Island Main Trunk line (SIMT). At Rolleston, the TranzAlpine turns north onto the Midland Line. Following an ancient Maori trail through the mountains that was later plotted by engineer Arthur Dobson, it is the Midland Line's passage through the Southern Alps that astounds the senses. The railway line between Springfield and Arthur's Pass is considered a masterpiece of railway engineering.

The Otira Tunnel marks the transition from Canterbury to West Coast. The weather is typically wetter on the west side - and the scenery is noticeably more vibrant. The views of Lake Brunner and the heritage station at Moana are not to be missed.

Epic TranzAlpine Scenic Train Ride (Christchurch to Greymouth) + Hokitika Gorge | New Zealand

Seeing the South Island's stunning natural beauty via the TranzAlpine scenic train ride is an unforgettable experience. We finally did the TranzAlpine for the very first time thanks to the Great Journeys of New Zealand reaching out to us and sponsoring our trip.

The TranzAlpine is an awesome train journey that covers 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way. The views are absolutely breathtaking. Experiencing the open carriage is a must and it takes just under 5 hours (one-way) meaning you could do a return trip in a day.

We chose to stay overnight in Greymouth which is in the wonderful West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand so that we could also visit Hokitika Gorge (another place that was on our NZ bucket list).

???? TranzAlpine

For all the info you need and to book your journey:

????️ Accommodation

BreakFree on Cashel (Christchurch)
Address: 165 Cashel Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011

Coleraine Motel (Greymouth)
Address: 61 High Street, Greymouth 7805

???? Other Transportation

We took a the number 29 bus from Christchurch airport to town (takes about 30 mins) and it was a 4 minute walk from Manchester St Super Stop to our accommodation (BreakFree on Cashel). We were pleased to learn that bus fares were half price til the end of June 2022.

In Greymouth we pre-booked a car rental with New Zealand Rent A Car, so picked up our keys on arrival at the i-SITE centre. As we did our booking quite last minute and opted for full insurance, we recommend researching around a bit with other car rentals as there could be cheaper options.

Best Restaurants, Cafes & Bars In Christchurch | Reveal New Zealand S2 E19

Episode 19, Season 2 of Reveal New Zealand from Christchurch as we check out some of the best places to eat and drink. The rebuild has lead to some awesome new restaurants, eateries, cafes and bars so we want to travel around and... ✪ Find all the best New Zealand travel tips in our ultimate guide — ⬇ More Below ⬇

Welcome back to Christchurch! In this vlog we can show off a bit of what makes Christchurch so cool — the eateries, restaurants, markets, cafes, bars and walking streets.

The Riverside Markets is one of the go to hubs in town, there's a huge selection of places to eat, drink and shop along with a few more specific restaurants as well. There's a collection of tables to sit and eat at after, so everyone can grab food from anywhere together.

Miro cafe was our breakfast spot and although we only tried one thing (the nicest of the day possibly!) the rest of the menu sounded great. As far as Christchurch cafes go, this was easily the most highly recommended.

Little High Eatery is another cool spot with some great restaurants and grab and go food as well. It's worth noting our friends ate ramen at the same spot, but picked a different one on the menu, and they loved it. So maybe I got unlucky, maybe they ran out of the right noodles, maybe that one's always a bit crap, but what evs. Great spot and the dumplings were fire!

Last up was the Pink Lady Rooftop Bar on top of the Muse Art Hotel. This was apparently the cool new kid on the block in Christchurch and it lived up to the hype (not always the case). Great cocktails, food and epic views as well.

And that was some of the best restaurants, cafes, bars and eateries in Christchurch — a city we really like and is totally worth checking out for any New Zealand travels.

Season 2 of Reveal NZ is a 20+ part video series showcasing the best things to do, see and experience in the Upper South Island. We're visiting Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough, Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs, Christchurch and more! We'll be going full vanlife for a portion of the trip in a top of the line motorhome as well, walking some of New Zealand's best tracks and checking out some incredible accommodation as well.

More than just the upper South Island, New Zealand is an incredibly beautiful country with so much to offer — but it's a lot larger than what you'd expect! We're producing the Ultimate New Zealand Travel Guide, a hub full of Kiwi knowledge to help you on your next adventures here. Take a look —

Top 3 Local Suggestions From Christchurch | Reveal New Zealand S2 E21

Episode 21, Season 2 of Reveal New Zealand from Christchurch to visit 3 places that came highly recommended. Sumner Beach, Lyttleton Harbour and Godley head hikes are all... ✪ Do you want the best New Zealand travel tips for your trip? Our ultimate travel guide is here — ⬇ More Below ⬇

Welcome back to one of our last days in Christchurch :( We asked you/our Instagram friends the best places to visit in Christchurch and beyond and came away with an awesome list of new places.

First up is Sumner Beach, a classic NZ town with a great Kiwi kind of vibe. Nice cafes, stunning beach, a massive lava rock on the sand and delicious coffee.

Just over the hill was stop 2 at Taylors Mistake, the start of the Godley Head hike. The hike sounds great and not too long (though we didn't do it all) with some awesome views of the beach initially, then onto some epic coastal scenes further around. This was probably the most common recommendation for a walk or hike in the area so if you're heading to Christchurch and want to some fresh air, head to Godley Head.

Last stop was Lyttleton, what was the closest town to the epicentre of the 2011 earthquakes in Christchurch. These days it's quirky with really cool looking cafes, a super busy harbour, a friendly iconic mascot, the tastiest pizza we've eaten in a long time and some great beer too.

That almost wraps up our Christchurch travel vlogs, but not the end of our New Zealand adventures of course!

Welcome to Christchurch! This city and its residents have been through a hell of a lot in recent years — rather than focus on the sadness from those occasions we wanted to share with you the epicness that's come from the rebuild. There's some really fun new things to do in Christchurch and over the next few videos we want to share some.

This travel vlog is all about 3 unique ways to see Christchurch — number 1 is the iconic tram around the city centre, number 2 is punting on the Avon river and number 3 is of course the Christchurch gondola.

More than just these 3 things to do though, there is so much on offer here that it's become a really cool city to walk and explore. The contrast between the new and the old, the rebuilt and untouched, the replanned and TBD locations — there is a cool feeling that you need to check out for any New Zealand travels.

We're Dane & Stacey — a couple of nomadic travellers from little New Zealand, doing big things. In early 2017 we booked a one-way ticket to Thailand and traveled for 3 years non-stop... but travel has changed for everyone since late 2019 obviously.

Now we spend most of our time in New Zealand, experiencing our own country through the eyes of a tourist and sharing that all here, with you.

And for what it's worth, it's pronounced Dane-Ger, aka Danger... not Dan-E-Ger ????
