甘肃张掖冰沟丹霞 Binggou Danxia Scenic Area in Gansu China - Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park

The Zhangye National Geopark is located in Gansu province Zhangye City. It covers an area of 322 square kilometres (124 sq mi). In 2009, Chinese National Geography magazine chose Zhangye Danxia as one of the six most beautiful landforms in China.

Zhangye Danxia is known for the unusual colours of the rocks, which are smooth, sharp and several hundred meters tall. They are the result of deposits of sandstone and other minerals that occurred over 24 million years. The result (similar to a layer cake), was tilted by the action of the same tectonic plates responsible for creating parts of the Himalayan mountains. Wind, rain, and time then sculpted extraordinary shapes, including towers, pillars, and ravines, with varying colours, patterns, and sizes.

The Zhangye National Geopark has 2 areas or 2 parks. One is the Rainbow Danxia Mountains Park (core area) #七彩丹霞 , and the other one is the Binggou Danxia Park/Area #冰沟丹霞 。

Travel to Danxia

Danxia Landforms, named after Mount Danxia in Guangdong province, are stunning geological formations that are unique to China. They were formed when red sandstone and other minerals were deposited by rivers over a period of about 24 million years. These deposits settled into distinct layers and, after another 15 million years, faults in the earth created by tectonic plate movement caused them to become exposed. Over another few millions of years, they were moulded into strange shapes by weathering and erosion, resulting in the unusual landforms that we find today. Yet the ones near Zhangye are arguably the most spectacular as, rather than just being made up of fiery red sandstone, the hills are a flurry of vibrant colours that resemble a living watercolour painting. For this reason, they have earned the nickname the “Rainbow Mountains”. Read more:

The Silk Road - from Zhangye to Xining - 从张掖到西宁

Last day of this fantastic road trip.
The day didn't start great as we found a flat wheel. We spent almost all morning to have it properly fixed.
After that back on the road.
We spent the whole day driving across wonderful sceneries and reached Xining in the late afternoon.
Said goodbye to our Borgward and hopped on the train to our next destination. New province: Ningxia.

Aujourd'hui, je te parle du parc national de Zhangjiajie.
Il se trouve en Chine et c'est tellement incroyable que James Cameron s'est inspiré de ces paysages pour créer son film Avatar.
