Beijing Travel Guide - Great Wall Of China Part 1 Mongol Invaders HD

Part 1: Mongol Invaders

In March, 1907, Aurel Stein, a British explorer and adventurer, and his caravan make their way through the Taklimakan desert. Giant ruins grab their attention: it is the Jade Gate, the westernmost point of a more than two-thousand-year-old fortification system. The walls, once built with clay and straw, are barely identifiable in some parts, but the fortification must have had great significance in the past. Travel back in time to around 130 BC. For centuries, belligerent nomads from the north have been raiding, looting and pillaging Chinese settlements. The contrast could not be more pronounced: wild horsemen roaming the desert on the one side, on the other a population of settled farmers. Following a campaign against the barbarians, Emperor Wudi of the Han dynasty decides to build a wall against the enemies. Construction starts near the location where Aurel Stein would find the ruins of the Jade Gate two thousand years later. Thousands of forced labour convicts were sent to the northwestern part of China, and thousands paid with their lives. Although the wall of the Han Dynasty crumbled into dust, subsequent dynasties built their own walls up to form the stone wall that became a monumental structure and a global icon.

Beijing Travel Guide - Bird's Nest HD

Beijing National Stadium, colloquially as the Bird's Nest, is a stadium in Beijing, China. The stadium was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Located in the Olympic Green, the $423 million stadium is the world's largest steel structure. The design was awarded to a submission from the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in April 2003, after a bidding process that included 13 final submissions. The design, which originated from the study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a Bird's nest. Ai Weiwei, the artistic consultant, played a critical role in pushing the design to have unique Chinese characteristics. The retractable roof was later removed from the design after inspiring the stadium's most recognizable aspect. Ground was broken in December 2003 and the stadium officially opened in June 2008.

Description of Hainan:

The island of Hainan is China’s southernmost province and its only tropical region. The 33,000sq km island is on the same latitude as Hawaii and enjoys similar weather – always warm and moderately humid. In fact, it’s earned itself the nickname “the Hawaii of China”.

Here’re 5 reasons to put it on your must-visit list:

1. Friendly people and tasty cuisine.
2. China’s best beaches.
3. The Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park is a great place to come for mountaineering, leisure and sightseeing.
4. Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone features three theme parks: Buddhism Culture Park, Blessing and Longevity Park and Hainan Custom Culture Park.
5. Futuristic and unique Beauty Crown Hotel (spectacular buildings, just like a big giant tree).

15 Things to do in Shanghai, China | Shanghai Travel Guide

I stayed in Shanghai for quite a bit to bring you places like Flair, Yu Garden, French Concession, Pudong, Xintiandi, Shanghai Nightlife and how to cheat China's internet ban. Featuring all must-see locations!

Shanghai literally means 'on top of the sea' in Chinese and with 23 million people it is currently the biggest city in China. The map below has a list of all the best places in Shanghai of which some have a dedicated article and video.

Prices in Shanghai are very affordable, a large bowl of delicious noodles with braised pork and vegetables will cost you less than $2 thus you can comfortably live on $10 budget per day.

The skyline of Shanghai was shaped in less than 26 years, and even holds landmarks like the Jin Mao tower, World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower, world's second tallest building at 632 meters.

Watch the breathtaking view of Shanghai's business district (Pudong) while standing on the Bund, especially at night when all the neon lights come on. For a great observatory view I recommend Flair restaurant on top of the Ritz-Carlton which is FREE to enter.

My favorite way to explore Shanghai was during my daily jogs. I recommend starting on Nanjing Road and make your way to People's Park, especially during the weekend since you may find yourself running into the Shanghai Wedding Market. At which Parents of unmarried adults go to the park every weekend, from noon to 5pm, to trade information on their kids.

China, being a communist country, I've never seen such a large gap between rich and poor. This was one of the last places, after North-Korea, where I would expect to see such a huge income gap.

Senior ladies were selling vegetables on the sidewalk while rich teenagers parked their Lamborghini's next door, quite the eye-opener.

I made a few Chinese friends during my stay in Shanghai, we all went for duck feet dinner on Nanjing Road and a few drinks at Sir Elly's on top of the Peninsula hotel which honestly is the most incredible rooftop bar in Shanghai. A must-see if you ever decide to visit Shanghai!

Shanghai has a strong French influence which you can explore at the French Concession area in the Xintiandi district, one of the most luxury areas of the city. Surprisingly,

I visited Shanghai during fashion week and Octoberfest, if there is on time to go it is visiting Shanghai around this time due to all the events being thrown around the city.

Now my most important tip is ExpressVPN, China has a very strict internet policy, because they cannot control information on Google, Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, thus they decided to ban it altogether.

The ExpressVPN app has a 30-day free trial and allows you to establish a secure private connection with an offshore server so you can still access the apps and sites you want while staying in China.

This is extremely helpful if you relay on Google Maps to navigate you around, even without - don't be discouraged to visit Shanghai, it was one of the most amazing experiences I've had. Have a safe journey!

Places we visited:
Peoples Park in Chengdu definitely is a must visit. See the people dating, dancing and drink a tea in Heming Teahouse.

Hotels:
In Chengdu we stayed in Panda Apartments. Note many hostels, hotels and guesthouses are named Panda, because Chengdu is the hometown of this cute animal. Finding a hotel this might be confusing sometimes ;)

When we came back to Chengdu at the end of our trip however we stayed in Miss Panda Hostel (see what I mean?) which I actually prefer over the first one. Cheaper, the rooms are great and the location is amazing! Would go back here anytime.

In Shanghai we stayed at a hotel the airline arranged for us.

In Lijiang we stayed in Zen Garden Hotel. The rooms are ok, not amazing, but the location, the staff and the cookies is! A good spot in the old town. They have two locations, so check what you get while making a reservation if you prefer one of the two.

China Travel Guide - Visit China - The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty the years 1420 to 1912. It is located in the centre

of Beijing, China, and now houses the Palace Museum. It served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political centre

of Chinese government for almost 500 years.

Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 ha (180 acres). The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese

palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World

Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

1. Oriental Pearl Tower - This TV Tower is in Pudong and gives Shanghai that futuristic look from the Bund. It's a good 468 meters high.

2. The Bund - This is the famous tourist destination where many foreigners stay when they visit. This is where you'll find all of the cool views of Shanghai's skyline.

3. The 2nd tallest building in the world finally opened in Shanghai, China, making the skyline even more impressive.

4. Nanjing Rd. and People's Square - Pretty much China's version of Time Square in NYC. A LOT of shopping.
