French Alps and Lyon

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2020 | After exploring the proud cuisine capital of Lyon — which, at least in its own mind, rivals Paris — we head for Chamonix, in the shadow of western Europe’s tallest peak: Mont Blanc. With the classic alpine resort as our springboard, we make some high-altitude cheese, then ride the lift up to the Aiguille du Midi and over to the border of Italy. And we hike the Tour du Mont Blanc — the trail that circles that iconic mountain. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #frenchalps

AIGUILLE DU MIDI |MONT-BLANC NATURAL RESORT| CHAMONIX, FRANCE 2021

The Aiguille Du Midi in the Mont-Blanc Natural Resort is one of the most popular things to do in Chamonix France and surrounding areas for obvious reasons. This 30 minute trip up to one of the most spectacular destinations in France, is well worth your time. Each cablecar fits up to 50 people and they do not shy away from fully booking every spot. We had a fantastic experience even though Mike forgot his ticket and almost didn’t get on.

Chamonix sits at a cool 3,396 feet of elevation and is home to the highest ascending cable-cars in the world. From the base of Mont Blanc you ascend up by cablecar 9,209 feet to the top of the Aiguille Du Midi at 12,605 feet above sea level. This seems like a lot and… it is. You can absolutely feel the thin air and dizzying affects of ascending so quickly, but you get used to it pretty fast. Your first cablecar heads up to a refuge about half way to the top. Taking in a glorious view of the face of the mountains before you, as you adjust to the altitude gain. You then hop in another cablecar that will take you the rest of the way to the top, and that ride is intimidating for sure.

When you reach the top of your ascent, you’re met with a view unparalleled by any other viewpoint in the city. This is truly the moment you realize just how high above everything you actually are. Standing on a bridge where you can see the surrounding mountain tops and breathing in the frigid air is a feeling you you’ll not soon forget. They have so many fun things to do at the top. You will be busy sight seeing and learning about the mountains and their history through games and informational plaques. They have all sorts of creative and intriguing areas to explore, including a short film of the mountain tops and their names. At the very top of this experience is The Step In The void. All together this is an experience that we think anyone going to Chamonix should have.

Aiguille du midi

Mont Blanc, French Apls, France Travel

Mont Blanc (French: Mont Blanc [mɔ̃ blɑ̃]; Italian: Monte Bianco [ˈmonte ˈbjaŋko], both meaning white mountain) is the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, rising to 4,807.81 m (15,774 ft) above sea level. It is the second-most prominent mountain in Europe, after Mount Elbrus, and it is the eleventh most prominent mountain summit in the world. The mountain stands between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Savoie and Haute-Savoie, France. It gives its name to the Mont Blanc massif, bordering Switzerland and forming part of a larger range referred to as the Graian Alps. The location of the summit of Mont Blanc is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the valleys of Montjoie, and Arve in France, on the border between the two countries. Ownership of the summit area has long been a subject of historical dispute between the two countries.

The Mont Blanc massif is popular for outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, trail running, and winter sports like skiing, and snowboarding. The most popular climbing route to the summit of Mont Blanc is the Goûter Route, which typically takes two days.

The three towns and their communes which surround Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy; and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France. The latter town was the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain range from Courmayeur to Chamonix, through the Col du Géant. The 11.6 km (7+1⁄4-mile) Mont Blanc Tunnel, constructed between 1957 and 1965, runs beneath the mountain and is a major transalpine transport route.

Mont Blanc: Long-Distance Hikes and Mountain Hospitality

I was just in the Alps with my TV crew, filming three new episodes of Rick Steves’ Europe. We spent a couple of days hiking (and filming) on the Tour du Mont Blanc trail, in the French Alps. It’s a whole parallel world there, away from the tourist crowds and intensity of the Alpine resorts, and really peaceful.

After just a taste of this classic long-distance hike, I am dreaming of coming back and doing the entire loop — and once again, I’m reminded that you can never run out of rewarding corners of Europe to explore.

What’s your favorite long-distance hiking experience in Europe?
