CHAD is a pretty popular travel destination for those of us looking to escape the winter and experience a warm, sun-soaked climate.
In this video we'll explore the top five places to visit in CHAD - from the capital city of N'Djamena to the savannahs and lakes of Ouaddaï.

Chad Sahara Desert Overland
This video documents an overland journey made across Africa and the Sahara Desert in 2001 covering a section with no roads from Niger, round the top of Lake Chad and into the country of Chad. Would you make this journey today?
This 200km journey took us 8 days due to the deep sand which was very soft in places. One 20km section in particular took us 4 days (more digging than driving).
Where is Lake Chad?
Lake Chad is shown on the Michelin Map as a big blue area but this lake has shrunk so much all that is left is dessert and the shore of this once massive lake is now 200km away and we didn't even come close to seeing it, the route taken by the few people venture round the north of the lake however still skirts the dunes now far to the north and involves lots of digging in the sand!

Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.
Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

Gerewol Festival - The most amazing cultural trip to Chad
Gerewol of the Wodaabe in Chad, the ceremony of the most beautiful people in the world.
In Southern Sahara region, there are one of the Africa's most enigmatic and interesting people: the Wodaabe or Bororo (Mbororo)
In September, end of the rainy season, every year in the surroundings of Dourbali, about 120 kilometers from the capital of Chad, two large Wodaabe family clans (the Soudousoukai and the Japto) come together for an impressive beauty contest known as Gerewol Festival.
The Gerewol dance
The Gerewol consists on a ceremony where men dance and compete to be the most beautiful. Women are the judges and can choose their future husband.
For these dances, men prepare themselves with their best clothes and accessories, painting their faces red (Gerewol) or yellow (Yaake) and highlighting the eyes and lips of black makeup, which makes the white of their teeth and eyes bright even more.
During the dance men are arranged aligned, being the youngest those who are placed in the extremes. The dances and the songs are hypnotic and are repeated for hours and hours.

Utah Badlands, April 2019, Day 6
Southern Utah is well-known for its beautiful geology. It is a remarkable region of canyons, plateaus, desert, arches, mountains, washes, escarpments and wild rock formations. Some would even describe it as “badlands”. Arriving from Arizona, Oregon and Oklahoma, three friends and I would spend six days on an amazing trip to explore the sights, sounds and history of these less traveled places. Day 6 covers the trip from a dispersed campsite along Cottonwood Canyon and House Rock Valley Road to BLM land on the north rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
The video includes a Studio Chat in which I discuss itinerary changes, a new portable loo, and fresh thoughts on the GoPro Hero 7.
