The main focus of the tour was 12 different archaeological sites, including Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The trip was timed to include the annual Day of the Dead celebrations. Along the way we explored the towns and cities we passed through, including 17 churches and saw a variety of wildlife and scenery.

Belize Marine Life
My time studying tropical marine ecology in Belize has certainly been one of the most memorable and impactful experiences of my life. Witnessing the dying coral reefs was a very difficult moment during my studies. However there is hope, with the help of marine protected areas and conservation efforts, the Belize barrier reef is recovering. I am grateful to have been given this opportunity and be able to share what I learned and experienced as I continue my studies in marine biology.

벨리즈 동서를 가로지르는 국도를 따라 열대 우림이 우거진 내륙으로 조금 더 들어간다. 벨리즈에서 두 번째로 큰 도시인 산 이그나시오는 마야문명의 숨결을 간직한 마야 후예들의 마을이다. 영어가 공용어지만, 스페인어를 일상어로 사용하며 마야어를 구사하는 사람들도 꽤 남아있다. “우리동네 산 이그나시오가 자랑스러워요.” “사는 게 좀 자유롭죠. 일을 할 수도 있고 약간은 예술적인 것들을 할 수도 있어요. 이 드레스도 마야 스타일이에요” 폭이 넓고 다단 주름이 들어간 마야 전통 의상을 입은 주민을 만나는 건 어렵지 않다. 마을 근처 한 마야 유적지로 걸음을 옮겼다. 손 도르래를 움직여 강을 건너고 울창한 숲 사이로 난 길을 따라 한참을 들어가야 보이는 숨은 듯 자리 잡은 축조물. 하늘을 향해 우뚝 솟은 견고한 돌의 제단은 바로 슈난투니치. 지금으로부터 약 천 백 년 전인 서기 900년경, 가장 번영했을 것으로 추정되는 마야 유적지다. “1800년대에 스페인 침략자들이 이 땅에 와서 마침 사냥하느라 여기를 지나갔는데 사냥개들이 저 위쪽에서 막 짖더랍니다. 당시 이곳은 키 큰 나무들로 둘러싸여서 그냥 산처럼 보였는데 개들이 들어가서 한참을 짖으니까 두 남자가 따라 들어가봤대요. 그랬더니 한 여인이 저 계단을 올라가다가 홀연히 사라졌답니다. 그래서 이곳 이름이 ‘돌의 여인’ 이라는 뜻의 마야어, ‘슈난투니치’가 된 거죠” 돌의 여인이 걷다 사라진 그 길을 거침없이 오르는 관광객들. 그러나 원래 이곳은 왕과 그 가족만 올라가는 것이 허용된 신성한 사원이었다. 천 년 전 왕은 여기서 해, 달 그리고 비의 신에게 부락의 안녕을 간절히 기원했을 것이다. “저희 숙소가 여기서 멀지 않은 곳에 있는데 근처에 마야 유적을 발굴하고 있는 산이 있어요. 거기서 어마어마한 에너지를 느꼈는데 아마 저 위에 올라가보시면 그 기운을 느낄 수 있을 거예요” 조금 더 올라가 ‘엘 까스띠요’라 불리는 피라미드 모양의 성채에 좀 더 가까이 가본다. 눈에 띄는 건 벽면의 상형문자들. 신, 춤추는 사람, 괴물 같은 마야의 세계관이 조각되어있는데, 보존상태도 제법 좋다. 0의 개념을 알았고, 1년을 365일로 계산할 정도로 뛰어났던 고대 마야인들. 그들은 건축술 또한 정교했다. 좁고 가파른 계단을 오르면 피라미드 각 층으로 연결되는데 옛날 왕과 가족이 머물렀던 그 공간을 지금 차지한 건 바로, 박쥐들이다. 대낮에 꼬물거리는 박쥐를 보게 되다니! 신기하고 조금은 귀엽기까지 하다. 걸음을 재촉해 꼭대기로 향한다. 통치자만이 올랐던 그곳, 천국과 맞닿은 그곳에선 삶과 죽음을 관장하는 제사장이자, 만 명의 주민을 통치했던 마야 군주의 위엄이 고스란히 느껴진다. 압도적인 자연 풍광과 전설이 된 문명이 주는 경외감에 젖어드는 시간. “관광지인데도 상업적인 느낌이 전혀 들지 않아요. 그 점이 정말 좋아요. 어디를 가더라도 싼 햄버거집 같은 게 다 있는데 그런 것 하나 없는 것이 정말 좋아요” “나도 처음에는 많이 무서웠단다” “이야, 용감한 어린이네” 겁을 내다가 결국 아빠 손을 꼭 붙잡고서야 소녀는 발걸음을 뗀다. “내가 해냈어요!” “무섭지만 올라왔지?” “네!” “뿌리를 기억하려고 자주 와요. 이게 우리 문화이고 우리는 여기서 계속 살아야하니까 아이들에게도 자주 보여줘요”
