The Village Van team went to Jamuna Nagar near Kakinada in East Godavari district to meet the artisans of ancient puppetry art. The visit was to explore what does an original puppet look like? How to play? This video definitely feels good to many like me who never heard of or watched it in the villages.
Special thanks to the troupe of puppetry artisans who showed us the century-old puppets from their collections, and performance at a short notice. The female lent vocal support and male coordinate the play with the puppets.
Currently there are puppet shows in our country in #Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. It seems that puppetry was prevalent on Telugu soil as early as the 3rd century BC. The Archaeologists have unearthed terracotta bull and monkey figurines from the #Harappan Mohenjo-daro civilization around 2500 BC. There was a puppet shadow theater in our country as early as the 6th century BC. There is a reference to puppets in the poem recited by Somana to Palkuri, who is a dancer of orange dolls in saree. Puppets are exemplified in the Bhagavad Gita when describing the qualities of Satva, Tamo and Rajo.
In the 3rd century BC inscriptions of Ashoka, the island of Jumbo is toyed with as a display area. In the Patanjali Mahabhashyam, puppetry is described as a major channel. There is a reference to puppetry in the Buddhist scripture Teri Gatha. Vatsya's Kama Sutras discuss the types of dolls and the differences in dolls.
It is not surprising that Marathi is the mother tongue of puppet artists who narrate the stories of Ramayana, #Mahabharata and Bhagavata. This art form, which migrated from Maharashtra, has developed into a popular art form in Telugu, blended into Telugu culture and brought vanne to our national wealth. This masterpiece of art today lives on with very few groups. Not to mention that the puppet lanterns are at an end.
It is unfortunate that the works related to this art, history, puppet making, and the methods of playing with dolls, do not have the science and technology involved in it through 'script'. Due to the availability of knowledge about the puppetry process in the western countries, we are not able to pave the way for puppetry work, while enthusiasts and groups in other states are working hard for the survival and spread of puppetry.@SureshJuttada
