When I got a message on Instagram about 6 weeks ago from a guy named Obed, who invited me to visit his country - the Democratic Republic of Congo -- I nearly looked past it.
But as I was already planning to go there, I took him up on the offer and l did I know we'd have the most amazing week together!!!
Obed's story is incredible inspiring -- a refugee turned entrepreneur -- so it was only natural for me to share it with the world.
In all honesty, he is one of the most genuine and caring people I've ever met, and if you are planning to visit the DRC or other countries in East Africa (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya) -- then contact him and he can plan your trip!!

What an incredible experience that was! I just attended a local wedding in the Democratic Republic of Congo ???????? It was fascinating to observe how the Congolese celebrate marriage -- there is no shortage of dancing, eating and smiling faces all around.
At first I was (very) intimidated being the only foreigner out of some 800 people in attendance, but they all welcomed me in with open arms and it turned out to be just fine.
Have you ever attended a wedding in a foreign country? It might be the best way to experience any given culture on earth!

What is a Chukudu? (Only in the Congo)

All over the city of Goma in Eastern Congo, I've been seeing these unique two-wheeled handmade bicycles made of wood.
They're called chukudus, and I learned that they're a major way that people transport goods around town.
The kicker? There is no engine or pedals!
Given that Goma is so hilly, chukudus simply rolls down the hills and then you need to manually push it up. Every single time.
It's a fascinating part of Goma's culture and I wanted to share it with you in today's video!

Yesterday in the Congo, I hiked Mt. Nyiragongo -- Africa's most active and dangerous volcano. After a 6 hour journey up to 3,500 meters, we slept overnight at the stunning crater, and admired the world's largest lava lake.
It was, without question, one of the best travel days of my life.
But this story is not so much about the volcano itself. It's about a guy named Elias, who since 1991, has been a porter and chef to cater for tourists who want to hike to the top.
I was randomly paired up with him, and was so astonished by how he carries up to 55 pounds of things with him up and down this volcano, three times a week. For the last 29 years. And he makes roughly $4 a day.
Elias deserves every bit of credit for his determination and hard work. It's people like him who make the world go 'round.

This is one of my favorite stories that I've ever told you!!
Welcome to BURUNDI, country #186. This East African nation is overshadowed in many ways by its neighbors of Rwanda, Tanzania, DRC and Uganda -- but there is SO MUCH life happening on these streets, nothing more impressive than their insane drumming skills!
Today, I drove 3 hours from the capital of Bujumbura to a small village called Gishora to witness the drumming culture where it all started. In fact, they claim to have invented the drum here way back in the day (made of wood and cow skin), and they are expert drummers to this day. It's a full production of dancing, singing and ... carrying drums on their heads? It's much harder than it looks!

Today I met Bernadette, who is the boss lady of the fabric business in Burundi! Her shop stood out to me among the thousands in the Bujumbura City Market because it was the busiest and best one around.
This wonderful story shares why her positive ethics have led her to be successful in her 25 years in the fabric industry, whereas many of the others fail after a few years.
Long story short, she pays her taxes and they don't.
I truly love making stories like this one, and I hope you find it inspiring!

TODAY WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE IN THE DR CONGO!!
I went trekking in the middle of the Congolese rainforest (Virunga National Park) to witness the incredible mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. If you can remember about 2 years ago, I did something similar in Uganda, but to be honest, it's 10X better in the DRC because we were the only ones here in this remote setting. I just can’t believe how human-like they are!
In other positive news, the world population of mountain gorillas has risen from about 600 to over 1,000 in the last decade, moving them from critically endangered to just endangered.

Backpacking Congo - Road trip through the Democratic Republic of the Congo
4000 km in 1 month - a road trip through eastern Congo in November 2019. (truck, boat and mototaxi) From the southern bordertown Kasumbalesa to Lubumbashi and Likasi, then all the way to the north: Ngoya, Manono, Ankoro, Kabalo, Kongolo, Kasongo, Kindu, Ubundu, Kisangani, Lubutu, Walikale, Goma, Idjwi Island and Bukavu. DRC is such a great country, especially the remote areas in eastern Congo are worth to visit. If you like adventurous travel, this is the place to be!
