COOK ISLANDS DRIVERS LICENSE | Highlights of Rarotonga, Cook Islands capital

One of the must do things in Cook Islands is to apply for the Cook Islands Drivers License. While it shouldn't be that difficult to do, many people fail to get it. Here, I show you exactly what you can expect, and how to get your own scooter license in the Cook Islands.

With your Cook Islands Drivers License in hand (or wallet/purse), you can legally drive around Rarotonga Island on a scooter. This is definitely the best way to see and to get around Rarotonga.

Some of the highlights of Rarotonga: the edge of the airport (to watch a huge Air New Zealand jet take off), coconut bread, coffee and breakfast from Beluga Cafe. Plus, the unique Rarotonga Golf Club, beer tour at the Matutu Brewery, and a fancy dinner at the Tamarind House Restaurant.

What to see in Rarotonga | The Cook Islands

The beating heart of our little paradise will capture yours. Rarotonga, the hub of the Cook Islands, has so much to see and do, yet remains unspoilt. No traffic lights, no McDonald’s and no building taller than the highest coconut tree.

The warmth of the tropical sun surrounds you, the scent of frangipani washes over you, the most pressing decision that you face: should you climb the summit of the island's majestic volcanic peak, or explore the crystal clear turquoise waters and swim with schools of tropical fish? Either way you know you’ll enjoy your holiday in this tropical paradise we call Rarotonga.

Arriving in Rarotonga, Cook Islands and eating with locals

Kia Orana! Get your sunnies and jandals ready coz it's time for a dose of relaxation and paradise in Rarotonga!

On this first of a three-part series let us show you what you need to do to get going once you arrive in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Raro is a short 4 hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand. In this episode we show you how much things cost, where to stay and then take you along on a progressive meal where we eat with local Cook Island families at their homes.

First things first we stop off and get our sims from Bluesky. Pretty much the only local phone operator to get your mobile data or wifi from. You can check out their full rates on:
just be warned that data isn't very cheap and the connection isn't the best on Raro but it works mostly fine enough.

Once you've ticked off mobile connectivity it's time to sort out transport. Scooters are the most popular option for getting around in Rarotonga but due to the fact we had 5 people and the chance of rain for most our trip was very high, we decided to hire a 7 seater vehicle instead.

We found Island Car and Bike Hire to have the cheapest rentals however the trade off is the vehicles aren't the newest which suited us just fine.

Supplies! Before we head over to our resort we need to get stocked up. Rarotonga only has two big grocery stores on the island. We headed to the one closest to our resort called Wigmore's Superstore which is on the Muri beach side.

Together with our group of friends we stayed at the Pacific Resort. Located right on Muri beach we enjoyed many piña coladas and bowls of ika mata (a raw fish dish) from this great and convenient accommodation.

We've saved the best for last though. This was one of our favourite activities during our stay. Dining with some Rarotongan locals and their families on a progressive meal. This involved getting picked up at our resort, going in a shuffle with a bunch of strangers then getting taken to three different Rarotonga family homes for delicious home cooked Cook Island food. The first home serves the entrée, second home the mains and the last home, dessert. Amazing way to experience Rarotonga's culture and food. We were able to meet so many great people and really familiarise ourselves with Cook Island food. You can check out the experience yourselves at Cook Island Tours.

We'd like to give a big shout out to our awesome friends Is That Us Fam for our gifts that we wore during the progressive meal with Cook Island Tours! You can watch their video where they surprised us with those gifts in their video here:

Where to eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

This is the final video in our 3-part Rarotonga vlog series! It's safe to say that food in Rarotonga really exceeded our expectations. The fish was so fresh it felt like it was caught only a few hours before it reached our plates. Check out this episode to find out all the great local spots that we managed to hit up during our time in the Cook Islands.

We're sure there were a bunch of other fantastic spots that we missed out on, but guess that means we'll just need to make another trip back to Raro one day :) If you're from Rarotonga or you've been there before, let us know where else we should try next time we visit the Cook Islands.

Here's a list of all the places we managed to cover in this Rarotonga food vlog though:

1. Charlies Cafe and Beach Hire - Awesome lil spot. You can either get a mean feed or rent a kayak and snorkel to venture out into the beach which is right next door. Their sandwiches are huge!
Address: Ara Tapu, Takitumu District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 11am–9pm

2. Trader Jacks - Just the thought of this place still brings smiles to our faces. The crayfish tail we had was so good we came here a second time and ordered the same dish. Peter also got the ika mata here (not shown in the video unfortunately) but believe us, it was amazing!
Address: Ara Tapu, Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Thursday 11am - 11pm
Friday 11am–3am
Saturday 11am–12am

3. The Waterline Restaurant and Beach Bar - One of the most beautifully located restaurants we went to during our stay in Rarotonga. Right next to the beach and in a charming wooden beach hutt. Also houses the best pina colada Peter has ever had.
Address: Arorangi, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Lunch - Tuesday - Friday 11:30am - 2pm
Dinner - Tuesday - Sunday from 6pm till late

4. The Mooring Fish Cafe - We heard from our Cook Island friends that this is where locals from Rarotonga go to get a great lunch.
Address: Avana Fishing Club near Ngatangiia District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 10:30am–3:30pm

5. Bite Time Cafe - This place surprised us with the quality of the ika mata and tuna. We ended up eating here after the Raemaru trek which you can see the whole video in:

Address: Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 8:30am–9pm

We hope you've enjoyed this Rarotonga series of ours! Be sure to watch our other 2 videos we made about Raro if you haven't seen them yet :)

COOK ISLANDS SCENIC FLIGHT | BEAUTIFUL Rarotonga to Aitutaki Lagoon | Air Rarotonga

I arrive to start my journey in the South Pacific on a scenic Cook Islands flight: Rarotonga to Aitutaki, with Air Rarotonga!

Starting off in Rarotonga, the capital of Cook Islands, where I check out the famous Sunday church service on Cook Islands.

I then fly to Aitutaki Cook Islands with the controversial Sunday Air Rarotonga flight, where I get properly welcomed by his Airbnb host with a lei!

I really enjoyed this scenic flight in Cook Islands experience, especially that I had the opportunity to see the beautiful Aitutaki Lagoon from above.

Also, I loved getting lei'd!

Here's more on Aitutaki Culture - there are tons of things I learned from my stay on this beautiful island :)

TRAVEL to COOK ISLANDS - Welcome to Rarotonga! (Vlog Part 1)

We were lucky enough to travel to Cook Islands this year and couldn't believe just how beautiful, relaxed and culturally fascinating this archipelago in the Pacific Islands is.

We spent a week exploring the best things to do in Rarotonga, looking for the best snorkelling spots, stand-up paddleboarding at night, tackling the cross island trek and eating with locals during a Progressive Dinner.

The island is incredibly stunning, and it's quickly become one of our all-time favourite destinations on the planet. If you're thinking about travelling to the Cook Islands, or just need some convincing, let our Cook Islands travel guide help you out!

Sunset Paddleboard Tour is NZ$ 60 per person
Progressive Dinner Tour price is NZ$ 99 per person
2 dives with Pacific Divers is NZ$ 99 per person

Disclaimer - We travelled to the Cook Islands as part of a media campaign with Cook Islands Tourism, and our flights were covered by Air New Zealand.

COOK ISLANDS: Island of RAROTONGA ????️????️, top sites to see and visit!

Island of Rarotonga, Cook islands, Pacific Ocean - top sites to see in the island of Rarotonga in the Cook islands in the Pacific Ocean. Let's go to beautiful the island of Rarotonga which is the most populous island of the Cook Islands, with a population of 10,572, out of the country's total resident population of 14,974.
The volcanic island of Rarotonga in the Cook islands stands over 14,750 feet (4,500 meters) above the ocean floor. the island of Rarotonga is 32 km (20 miles) in circumference and has an area of 67.19 km2 (26 square miles). At a depth of 4,000 m (13,000 ft) the volcano is nearly 50 km (31 miles) in diameter. Te Manga, at 658 m (2,140 ft) above sea level, is the highest peak on the island of Rarotonga.
The island of Rarotonga is surrounded by a lagoon, which often extends more than a hundred metres to the reef, then slopes steeply to deep water. The reef fronts the shore to the north of the island, making the lagoon there unsuitable for swimming and water sports, but to the south east, particularly around Muri, the lagoon is at its widest and deepest. This part of the island is the most popular with tourists for swimming, snorkelling and boating. Agricultural terraces, flats and swamps surround the central mountain area.

Island Paradise in Rarotonga Cook Islands ????????

We had an incredible 8-night getaway in Rarotonga, our first time in the Cook Islands. This island, surrounded by the most stunning crystal-clear lagoon, was totally worth the long journey. We hopped on a flight from SFO to Honolulu, had a quick layover, and finally landed in Rarotonga.

During our stay, we tried out three awesome accommodations in different parts of the island, which added some variety to our trip. But the highlight was the fantastic tour with Captain Tamas Lagoon Cruises. Seriously, it was a blast! The guides were not just informative but also super entertaining, making the day unforgettable.

If you're thinking about a trip to the Cook Islands, be ready for beautiful beaches, fantastic snorkeling spots, delicious food, and some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. We had an amazing time, and you can bet we're coming back! Thank you for watching!

COOK ISLANDS FOOD | Where do locals eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands?

What tourists eat in Cook Islands is quite different than what the locals eat. So, what is the most popular Cook Islands food that people eat in Rarotonga Cook Islands?

Surprisingly, there are some laid back and cheap places to eat in Cook Islands, and I visited a few of them.

These take-away places are scattered everywhere throughout the island. In Rarotonga, I visited the popular Sea Salt Takeaway and Rarotonga Chicken, which are two of the most popular places to eat on the island.

WARNING: Beware of the actual LIVE chickens while eating in some Cook Islands restaurants. They will try to steal your food, and one hen managed to do just that and have a peck of my lunch.

Basically, Cook Islanders are like the rest of us - and when they go out to eat, they like fast food too.

But if you want to check out some of the traditional foods of Cook Islands, there's lots of places to do that. To learn more, check out our handy guide: Cook Islands Food – Design a Do It Yourself Polynesian Food Tour at:

Top 5 Things to do in RAROTONGA Cook Islands

If you're planning a trip to Rarotonga Cook Islands, then you might be wondering what are the top things to do in Raro. This video is here to help you out :)

On this episode we take you along to all the great activities we did during our week long stay in Rarotonga Cook Islands.

Number one on this Top 5 Things to do in Rarotonga video is doing some fun water activities. Luckily we were able to rent some kayaks for free from Pacific Resort which was the place where we were staying. We had a blast paddling our kayaks from our main island all around the lagoon in Muri.

But if your hotel doesn't have kayaks for hire you might want to check out The Dive Centre - The Big Fish for some snorkeling in Raro instead.
Address: Are Tapu Aroa Beach Rarotonga, Cook Islands
For $15 each, we hired some snorkels and had an amazing time looking at all the tropical fishes.

Yen's favourite activity during our stay was visiting:
Te Vara Nui Village
Address: Te Vara Nui, Ara Tapu, Cook Islands
We had a delicious buffet of local Cook Island food as well as an amazing live cultural show. The dancing and energy at Te Vara Nui is fantastic and something we really enjoyed. Definitely a highly recommended experience from both of us if you're holidaying in Rarotonga.

You can also check out Rarotonga town centre. Along the way you can pick up some local clothes and eat at some popular food spots.

To check out the food stops in full you'll need to wait for our Best Eats Rarotonga episode which comes out next week :)

You can also visit the Punanga Nui market while you're in Rarotonga's town centre. Or, if you are staying near the lagoon at Muri, conveniently there is another night market there. The Muri night market dishes cost around about $15 each and you can also expect to pay around $5 for a drink but you have to go early as food tends to sell out fast at Muri night market.

Finally if you're in Rarotonga you have got to do one of the famous treks, whether it is The Needle or Raemaru. They are both spectacular.

We opted for Raemaru Trek as it was a lot shorter. The incline was pretty challenging especially after a few days of rain and so it is best to be careful while scaling the mountain. Also bring plenty of insect repellent as there are a lot of mosquitoes.

We hope you enjoy this Rarotonga series! Check out our other 2 videos here:
