Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro via Lemosho Route, Tanzania (Documentary in 4k)

Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….

Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.

Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.

--About my Cooperation with G Adventures--
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers outdoor tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

Mount Kilimanjaro // The Roof of Africa

Join Mediocre Amateur on an unforgettable journey as Danny takes on the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro by way of the iconic Marangu Route! This video showcases the thrilling and awe-inspiring experience of climbing Africa's highest peak, offering you a glimpse of the challenges and triumphs that await trekkers who have the time, and the hoards of gold necessary to reach for the skies.
????️ The Marangu Route
The Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola route, is one of the most popular and well-established paths to ascend Kilimanjaro. As Danny embarks on this expedition, he will take you through the captivating landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and breathtaking vistas that make this journey a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
????‍♂️ A Test of Endurance and Perseverance
Scaling Mount Kilimanjaro is not just an ordinary trek; it's a test of physical and mental strength. Throughout this video, you will bear witness as Danny conquers rocky trails, traverses lush rainforests, patiently tolerates condescending guides, eats endless bowls of soup and braves the high-altitude terrain.
???? Unraveling Stunning Scenery
The Marangu Route rewards trekkers with breathtaking panoramas at every turn. From the vibrant hues of the sunrise to the mystical blanket of clouds beneath Danny’s feet, the views will leave you in awe of the sheer beauty of Africa. This video captures these magical moments, allowing you to soak in the majesty of Kilimanjaro.
⛺️ The Hut Experience
Unlike other routes, the Marangu Route offers hut accommodations, providing a comfortable haven for climbers to rest, relax, and awkwardly eat alone in the corner of the dinning room. Get a glimpse of the camaraderie and warmth within the huts as trekkers from around the world share stories, laughter, and limited oxygen.
???? Kilimanjaro's Ecological Richness
Climbing Kilimanjaro isn't just about reaching the summit; it's also about appreciating the rich biodiversity that thrives on its slopes. This video probably showcases the unique flora and fauna that make this UNESCO World Heritage Site and a nature lover's paradise.
???? The Summit: Uhuru Peak
Finally, after days of dedication, nights of poor sleep and a handful of casually walked miles, Danny stands triumphant at the Roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak. The elation of this incredible achievement is for some beyond words, and you'll feel the rush of emotions as Danny takes in the unparalleled 360-degree view from the summit.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro|Tanzania ????????

In this video, we start out in Dar Es Salaam, me and the boys, including @harryjaggardtravel , Don Rob, and Malak al Lebnen: Fouad. We all take a small propeller flight plane from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha, Tanzania. Then we get picked up by our tour guide operator named Malaki. He has an incredible setup for us and then takes us to the Masaai tribe lodge where we stay for the night.

Once we arrive, we meet up with @GoWithAli , my brother, my friend Jimmy, Cal, and Brian. We stay overnight, and we'll share with you our experiences of our stay there.

The next morning, we wake up, have breakfast, and take you with us to hike up Kilimanjaro. On this hike, it's a few-hour hike, not to the top of the main Mount Kilimanjaro mountain, but we go up to the tip of one of the mountain peaks within Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. It was so much fun and made for a great first day, which you'll see in the video.

Full Text of video (closed captioning available)
Hey guys, I wanted to go over the reasons that I
believe I did not get to the summit of Mount
Kilimanjaro.
The first mistake that I made was not getting
there early enough. I should have gotten there
at least one day earlier than I did. At the time, I
had recently started a new job so I didn’t have
much vacation time. I used it all for this trip. I
flew there which took about a solid day of
flying, got to Moshi town, checked into the
hotel, slept, and then climbed the very next
day.
This was a mistake as I should have gotten
there at least a day earlier to rest. Ideally, I
would have gotten there about a week earlier
and maybe done a safari while I was there
before. This would have gotten rid of the jet
lag that I had and definitely helped with the
actual climb
That leads me to my next mistake, which was
trying to do the climb as fast as possible. I went
for the popular Machame route, which is
typically done in 6 or 7 days. I chose the 6 day
option. An extra day would have definitely
helped as the climb is less intense. If I had to
do it over, I wouldn’t even consider the 6 day
climb.
There are also other routes you can take. I
chose the Machame route as it seemed like a
good blend of scenery and difficulty. There are
routes that are easier but do not have the same
degree of views. If I had to do it again, I would
probably go for the Marangu route or the
Northern Circuit, which are generally
considered to be easier routes than Machame.
Another mistake that I made was buying a
cheap sleeping bag. I bought a small packable
sleeping bag which fit into my backpack. It
wasn’t nearly warm enough or comfortable
enough, in hindsight. I’d get a larger and
warmer sleeping bag if I attempt the climb
again. One night I actually had to sleep with all
of my clothes including my jacket on, inside the
bag, and I was still very cold. I did buy a
packable sleeping pad, and that is definitely
something that I would recommend.
I would also bring anti-nausea medicine with
me. I did bring a first aid kit that I had
assembled with bandaids, Tylenol, and various
things like that, but I did not have anti-nausea
medication. I would definitely recommend that
you bring some pepto bismol or Dramamine if
you are going to attempt the climb.
Another suggestion that I would make is to find
out as much as you can about what kind of food
you will be getting. The climb that I went on
had two options, a basic food package which I
believe was just some sandwiches and fruit,
and the complete option that I went with. The
complete option had all meals, breakfast, lunch
and dinner. It was porridge for breakfast, a
sandwich and fruit for lunch, and dinner which
was usually fried chicken and some vegetables.
Both options came with your daily supply of
water. In hindsight, I would probably go for the
basic food package and bring my own food with
me, like breakfast bars. Every morning on my
climb we had porridge, which I thought was
terrible. I’d definitely not do that again. I got
quite sick on the climb, and I am pretty sure
that the food was at least part of the reason,
other than the altitude itself.
Something that I spent quite a lot of time
researching was boots and socks. I ultimately
brought the Arcteryx Bora Mid GTX hiking boot,
which sells for about $280 online right now. I
think I paid slightly more, about $300 for mine
at the time. It’s a great boot. It’s lightweight,
and fits your foot more like a sneaker than a
boot. It is however, difficult to put on and take
off. On the plus side, once you get them on,
they’re not going anywhere.
Originally I was going to wear a pair of boots
that I already had, which are Timberland White
Ledge waterproof hiking boots. They’re about
$90 right now, roughly a third the cost of the
Arcteryx boots. If you’re on a budget, I’d
suggest the Timberlands or something similar.
The Arcteyx boots are noticeably better in
terms of fit and comfort than the Timberlands,
but for three times the cost? I don’t think they
are anywhere near three times as good.
