Building a Wooden Kayak - Making the microBootlegger

Guillemot Kayak Build

In the summer of 2012, I began building a cedar-strip kayak with the goal of someday kayaking to the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. The kayak design is the Guillemot strip-built sea kayak from Nick Schade. This video is a walk through the building process from idea to launch with reflective narration. The kayak was completed in July 2014.

Building a Strip Built Kayak (microBootlegger Sport)

My latest DIY project - building a cedar strip kayak. I chose to use the beveled strip approach instead of the bead and cove option.

Details of my DIY construction start at:
Note that I used pine instead of cedar because that's the wood I could get locally. That isn't ideal but worked ok.
The interior and exterior are fiberglassed with 6oz glass and epoxy (TotalBoat Marine Epoxy). That finish is varnished (TotalBoat Lust) with a final coat of spray on varnish.

The microBootlegger Sport was designed by Nick Schade of Guillemot Kayaks and plans are available. Well done Nick - this is a fantastic boat!

CLC Wood Duck 10 Kayak Build

In early spring of 2011 I built this CLC Wood Duck 10 kayak kit. It is a CNC cut wood kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. It is cut from Okoume and Sapele mahogany wood and its constructed with the stitch and glue method. I used MAS epoxies, Interlux and Rustoleum Marine paint and Epifanes varnish. The build took 85 hours and the kayak weights 28 lbs.

Cedar Strip Planking the Talullah Outrigger Sailing Canoe

In this video we arrive at @ChesapeakeLightCraftBoats in Annapolis and we begin to build the Talullah Canoe. A double outrigger sailing canoe designed by Chesapeake Light Craft. We talk about this new design here In this video we get a tour of Chesapeake Light Craft, we set up the male mold, make the stems, cedar strip the main hull, and fair the hull.

Building Tiki 26 in 180 Days [S1-E2]

Building Tiki 26 in 180 Days - The most I was wondering how can an amateur that knows nothing about building boats can build a DIY catamaran. Probably it was because of this question that the majority never thinks of DIY. Well, it was not difficult, I just started and somehow it went. The constructor adapted plans to be easy-to-read for those that have no clue what DIY means in the first place (DIY = do it yourself).

Maiden Voyage of Nancy Miller's handmade wooden kayak! From Marietta to Belpre Ohio

Here are just a few clips from the christening of my boat! I made it from Pygmyboats.com kit. I spent over 120 hours and 70 days and I'm finally done! We launched the boat outside the lockmaster's house in Marietta, where I built it. I paddled it home to Belpre, Ohio. My husband Mark and my instructor and master boat builder Dan Jones joined me on the 15 mile journey.

Building our first prototype

In recent months we have been working hard to accomplish an important project to us; a fully customized/modified CNC Vember Expedition sea kayak. The only thing we kept from the original drawings was the hull, all the rest are pretty much custom. More details will be posted on our web site & our Facebook page.

Super Fun DIY Canoe Build and Transformation

In this video we take a broken down canoe we got for $150 off Craigslist, and make it into a beautiful one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It took months of sanding, epoxy, painting and trial and error and it turned out AMAZING! Hope you guys enjoy and hopefully more DIY projects are to come in the future.

Part 1 Making Pine Strip Canoe

Using unfinished old pine boards that were originally used to build a backyard ice rink, to build a pine strip canoe… I have never build a canoe before… actually I haven’t build a lot out of wood… I have watched some YouTube videos on how to build a cedar strip canoe… wish me luck ????

Jonathon Sawden normally works in HR but sees the importance to tell the world that his people, the Sugpiaq (Sookh-pee-ahk), and other Native peoples are still here. Here, Jonathon and another young apprentice artist are working with a Master Kayak Builder to learn the techniques to build traditional boats and be the next generation to keep the craft and culture alive.
