How I got to fly on the Dornier 328 | British Airways smallest Jet !? 4K

I always thought the Embraer 190 was the smallest jet in the British Airways Fleet. That of course is what the BA website tells us. In fact with Sun Air of Scandanavia BA fly the tiny 32 seat Dornier 328 is actually the smallest jet BA fly.

Albeit on a very limited route and not very wallet friendly prices. I live near Manchester Airport so the plan was to fly Manchester to Billund and then some how get home.
It took some doing but I did it.

Manchester to Billund, Dornier 328 £45.50 with 2950 Avios 27/06/2023
Billund to Manchester A320 Club Europe £126.00 27/06/2023

I then flew BA to Marseille Economy £17.50 with 4750 Avios 28/06/2023 so I could get a flight from Terminal 3 and visit all 8 One World Lounges. Watch the video of that fantastic day here

The Dornier 328 ( credit airliners.net )
Country of Origin: Germany
Type: 30 seat regional turboprop airliner

History:
The 30 seat Dornier 328 is a modern regional turboprop airliner that offers high cruising speeds and advanced systems. Development of the 328 traces back to Dornier's mid 1980s market research that indicated there existed a substantial market for regional airliners in the 30 seat class through to 2005. Firm 328 development work began in December 1988, culminating in the first development aircraft's first flight on December 6 1991. The 328 was awarded certification in October 1993. First customer deliveries also occurred in October 1993. The 328 design incorporates an all new fuselage section for three abreast seating (offering more width per passenger than the 727/737) combined with the same basic supercritical wing of the earlier Dornier 228. Clean aerodynamics give the 328 excellent high speed cruise and climb performance. Composite materials are used in a number of areas (particularly the tail) to reduce weight and the blades on the Hartzell props are composite. The flightdeck features a five screen Honeywell Primus 2000 EFIS avionics system, while with heads-up displays the 328 can be qualified for Cat IIIa landings. Industrial partners on the 328 include Daewoo Heavy Industries (fuselage), Aermacchi (nose), Westland (nacelles) and Israel Aircraft Industries (wing), accounting for 40% of the aircraft's construction. Variants of the 328 are the initial production standard 328-100, the standard 328-110 with a larger dorsal fin, heavier weights and greater range, the 328-120 with PW119C engines and improved short field performance and the 328-130 with progressive rudder authority reduction with increasing airspeed. At various times Dornier studied 50 seat stretches of the 328, but all were abandoned. Dornier also studied building a 328 demonstrator powered by hydrogen. The liquid hydrogen fuel would have been stored in two external tanks under the wings and outboard of the engines. The last 328 was delivered to Air Alps Aviation in Austria in October 1999. The 328JET regional jet development is described separately. Fairchild Aerospace acquired 80% of Dornier in early June 1996 to form Fairchild Dornier GmbH, but production of the 328 had stopped already before the Fairchild Dornier name became effective August 8, 2000.

Powerplants: Two 1625kW (2180shp) takeoff rated Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119B turboprops driving six blade Hartzell propellers.

Performance: 328-110 - Max cruising speed 620km/h (335kt). Design cruising altitude 25,000ft or optionally 31,000ft. Range with 30 passengers and reserves at max cruising speed and 25,000ft cruising altitude 1665km (900nm), at 31,000ft 1850km (1000nm).

Weights: 328-110 - Operating empty 8920kg (19,665lb), max takeoff 13,990kg (30,842lb).
DimensionsWing span 20.98m (68ft 10in), length 21.22m (69ft 8in), height 7.24m (23ft 9in). Wing area 40.0m2 (430.6sq ft).
Capacity: Flightcrew of two. Typical passenger seating for 30 to 33 at three abreast, max seating for 39 at four abreast.
Production: Total 328 production of 112, incl 105 production aircraft. 95 in service in late 2002.

Grounded: British Island Airways

This episode of grounded looks at the second incarnation of British Island Airways, a UK based charter operator spun off from Air UK and named after it's own predecessor. Operating a fleet of BAC-One-Eleven and McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft, BIA were a well managed airline, growing steadily through the 1980s until it all came crashing down in early 1990.

***PRODUCTION NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE***
*This episode took a lot longer to make than planned, I had to trim a few bits for timing purposes however to keep it at a sensible length. I also had to re-record some sections of audio at the eleventh hour, hopefully you won't notice the splices :)

* There are some jokes or other attempts at humour, hopefully they hit their mark.

* Regarding the BA takeover of BCAL, I say 1987 in this, based on a direct lift from the BIA director's report (which was published in '88). All I know is that I wish they were still Caledonian Girls...

* That really is a photo of me in the co-pilot seat of a 757, G-CPEV, when I as cabin crew did an aircraft familiarisation visit to explore the aircraft and get a proper feel for it. While I was having private flying lessons at the time, I am not a pilot :(

* The I wonder what happened to them? regarding Air 2000 is of course, tongue in cheek as I would work for them following their rebranding as First Choice Airways in 2006 during a break from Excel / XL Airways.

* No offence meant to anyone at Dan-Air, I was and still am a fan and am merely repeating that somewhat unfair nickname within the context of the day.

* Expo Airways was a short-lived virtual airline subsidiary of my own Fusion Airlines back in Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) days.

***Airlines Referenced in This Episode that are covered by other Grounded Episodes***

Air UK
Air UK (AirUK) were formed through the merger of 4 other airlines to become the UK's largest regional airline and 3rd largest airline behind British Airways and British Caledonian. Operating from 1980 until 1997 when they rebranded as KLM UK they were broken up into KLM Cityhopper and Buzz.

Air Florida
Originally billed as The deregulation success story Air Florida grew from a tiny intrastate carrier to an international & long-haul airline. Sadly remembered for their bright colour scheme being plainly visible in the wreckage of a tragic accident...

Orion Airways
Orion Airways was known for their retro looking livery but they did have a great reputation, a UK holiday airline which was the unfortunate victim of takeovers and eventually merged into Britannia Airways before the decade was out.

British Jet
British Jet was a short lived charter airline based in Malta and operated flights to various UK airports.

Air Scandic
Air Scandic was a small independent charter airline known for its MS Paint approach to aircraft livery designs...

Airways International Cymru
A Welsh based charter airline, Airways International Cymru operated a small fleet of BAC 1-11s and 737s during the mid-1980s. Following their collapse they were reborn as Amber Air which itself was acquired by Paramount Airways after just a few months in the air.

Paramount Airways
Paramount Airways were the first British operator of the McDonnell-Douglas MD-83, even operating the type from the UK to India. The airline collapsed in 1989 after a fraud investigation into the chairman revealed a huge theft of funds...

Also, I reference my final days as cabin crew as my airline collapsed. I did a special episode on the 10 year anniversary, XL Airways: The Final Hours which was a play by play of my last day as air crew :(

I really hope you enjoyed this episode, I wanted it to follow right on behind the Air UK episode but took a lot longer than intended to produce after hitting several
problems on the way. I am very happy with the end result, hopefully you are too :)

I really appreciate any comments and feedback on this or other episodes as well as suggestions for future episodes. Believe me, if I say that your airline is on the list, it really is :) I mention several other airlines in this episode and am already working on almost all of them, it just takes time :)

World’s Best First Class? Air France La Premiere

I flew Air France from Nice to Dubai. During online check-in I decided to upgrade my ticket from Business Class to La Premiere, which is Air France's very exclusive First Class.

I was escorted to the plane by an Air France agent in Nice. After a non-eventful one-hour domestic flight, I arrived at Paris CDG where I was met by my personal escort and a limo to the Air France Salon La Premiere (lounge). I enjoyed some of the great French food and drink there before I headed off for my next flight to Dubai.

The Air France Paris to Dubai flight was a B777-300/ER. I was fortunate enough to be the only passenger in La Premiere. Take a look at the understated luxury design and elegance of the cabin. Combine with great French gastronomy and La Premiere remains one of my favourite all-time First-Class experiences. During the video, I also reveal the best way to fly in La Premiere.

Grounded: Air UK

This episode of Grounded looks at Air UK (or AirUK depending on how you look at it), formed through the amalgamation of four smaller airlines AirUK became the largest regional airline in the United Kingdom and the country's third largest airline behind British Airways and British Caledonian.

AirUK operated from 1980 until 1997 when it was rebranded as KLM UK and then divided up between KLM Cityhopper and Buzz, the low fare airline acquired by Ryanair. This episode tells the story from start to finish, hopefully doing the airline and the folks involved proud and hopefully, not too long to watch either ;)

**PRODUCTION NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE**
*This episode took a lot longer than planned to produce due to a few issues, in order to do a good job, I have not rushed it though I have had to trim it slightly for timing purposes.
*The joke regarding the weather - I know the skies are blue once above the grey and rainy clouds, I don't need reminding - I spent some of the best years of my life above the clouds ;)
*I have tried to put a couple of other jokes in here, hopefully they hit the mark :)
*The Dan Air London 737 G-TREN - I have indeed worked on that aircraft, in fact it was the second aircraft I worked on as Cabin Crew (Flight Attendant) when it was with Islandsflug as TF-ELV.
*AirUK Leisure / Leisure International and British Island Airways (1982) are currently in production and will arrive in due course :)

**Airlines Referenced in This Episode that are covered by other Grounded Episodes**

UK International - UK Long Haul airline headquartered above a furniture shop;

National Airlines - Established in the late 1990s and part owned by several Las Vegas hotels, National operated a fleet of Boeing 757s;

Hooters Air - The Restaurant Chain had it's own airline for a few years, operating some 737s and 757s;

Gill Airways - A regional airline based in the North East of England;

Viking Airlines - Expanded into the void left behind by XL Airways following their collapse, ran into the ground by the same management team;

XL Airways - One of Europe's largest travel companies collapsed spectacularly in 2008, part of a several episode arc this episode looks as the fall of XL Airways;

Excalibur Airways - Where it all began for me, Episode 1 of Grounded looked at this promising UK holiday airline which following a takeover was led by some fairly braindead management who bankrupted the company within months;

If you are interested in the history of ITV, Matthew Harris has a great series called ITV in the Face, episode one looks at the South West region and covers Westward Television and its successors;

I really hope you have enjoyed this episode, I have been wanting to cover AirUK for quite a while. I am fairly happy with how it has come out and hope that you folks like it :)

Thanks for watching and I really appreciate any feedback or suggestions for future episodes.

Thank you for flying with us.

Flying My First Jet as an Airline Cadet - Emirates Flight Training Academy

I visited Emirates Flight Training Academy in Dubai, which is not a flight school but a dedicated airline academy.

During my visit, I flew their Cirrus SR-22 and Embraer Phenom 100 jet with a professional flight instructor. Check out my takeoff, landing, and the flight. It was my first time flying a jet since I’ve received my Private Pilot License.

After the flight, I visited the entire academy. The classroom with interactive teaching, the test room about all the qualifications, the canteen, and student accommodation.

The entire airline academy program starts from zero to an integrated ATPL in 2 years. The student will build up 250 flying hours include multi-engine jet hours. The first-year program will be theory-based ground school. The entire cost of the program is approximately $180,000 include accommodation and food.

Ice Pilots of Buffalo Airways - Raw Aviation in Northern Canada

It's the wild wild West in Northern Canada. The 1940s made Curtiss C-46 Commando, the world's last flying Lockheed Electra and other classic planes are still flying every day to deliver vital supplies to remote communities. I joined Mikey McBryan at Buffalo Airways to discover their unique operation.

Pilots at Buffalo Airways need to roll up their sleeves, not only flying the plane but also loading cargo, refueling and servicing these classic airplanes. It is a full day of action following what these ice pilots do there.

At the end of the video, pilots talk about the harsh and unique winter operation. It is extreme flying!

So I Flew on Lufthansa's Boeing 747-400...

The Boeing 747 is without doubt, an icon of civil aviation, revolutionizing air travel all over the globe as the very first widebody airliner to enter service.

The 747-400 variant is a more advanced version that first flew in 1988, and served as the backbone of many airlines' long haul fleets in the decades that followed.

However, I've never actually flown on one before, and with Lufthansa bringing back 8 of theirs back into service, it was about time I flew on the iconic 747-400!

With many thanks to Mr. @JonathanWinton123 for the external shot of the landing!

The Boeing 767 That Ran Out Of Fuel: The Gimli Glider

Go to or use code SIMPLEFLYING to get a 2-year plan plus 1 additional month with a huge discount.

It has been almost four decades since an Air Canada Boeing 767 ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet. With solid piloting and a little bit of luck, the jet landed without any severe injuries to passengers or crew. The aircraft itself even went on to serve another 25 years with the airline. Let’s take a look at the story of The Gimli Glider…
