Gaborone, beautiful city in Botswana, commercial business, travel, hotels, growing economy

Gaborone (Tswana pronunciation: [χabʊˈrʊnɛ][missing tone]; English /ˌɡæbəˈroʊniː/ GAB-ə-ROH-nee) is the capital and largest city of Botswana with a population of 231,626 based on the 2011 census,[5] about 10% of the total population of Botswana.[8] Its agglomeration is home to 421,907 inhabitants at the 2011 census.
Gaborone is situated between Kgale and Oodi Hills, near the confluence Notwane River and Segoditshane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, and 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the South African border.[9] The city is served by the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. It is an administrative district in its own right, but is the capital of the surrounding South-East District.[10] Locals often refer to the city as Gabs.[11]
The city of Gaborone is named after Chief Gaborone of the Tlokwa tribe, who once controlled land nearby. Because it had no tribal affiliation and was close to fresh water, the city was planned to be the capital in the mid-1960s when the Bechuanaland Protectorate became an independent nation. The centre of the city is a long strip of commercial businesses, called the Mall, with a semicircle-shaped area of government offices to its west. Gaborone is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, and this has created problems with housing and illegal settlements. The city has also dealt with conflicts spilling into the country from Zimbabwe and South Africa during the 1980s.
Gaborone is the economic capital as well as the government capital; it is headquarters to numerous companies and the Botswana Stock Exchange. Gaborone is also home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional economic community established in 1980.[12] Many languages are spoken there, Setswana (Tswana) being the main tongue. English, iKalanga, and Kgalagadi are also spoken.
The Gaborone Dam is located south of Gaborone along the Gaborone-Lobatse road, and provides water for both Gaborone and Lobatse. The dam is the second biggest in Botswana, able to hold 141,400,000 cubic metres (184,900,000 cu yd).[53] It is also starting to be marketed as a recreational area. The northern end of the reservoir is planned to become an entertainment venue called The Waterfront. There is a yacht club, called Gaborone Yacht Club, also on the northern side of the lake. The southern end houses the Kalahari Fishing Club and a new public facility called City Scapes. City Scapes contains parks, playgrounds, and boating facilities.[54] The dam is popular with birdwatchers, windsurfers, and anglers.[14] However, there is no swimming due to the presence of crocodiles gaand parasitic bilharzias.[47]Gaborone is the political centre of Botswana. Most government buildings are located west of the Main Mall in an area called the Government Enclave.[43] The National Assembly of Botswana, the Ntlo ya Dikgosi, the National Archives,[18] the Department of Taxes and Attorney General's Chambers Building, and the Ministry of Health. Near the entrance of the parliament building, there is a statue of Sir Seretse Khama, Botswana's first president as well as a memorial dedicated to the three hundred Batswana who were killed from 1939 to 1945.[62] Another monument pays tribute to the Botswana Defence Force soldiers who died in the Rhodesian Bush War.[13]
Before 1982, Gaborone held one parliamentary constituency, one seat in the Parliament of Botswana. From 1982 to 1993, Gaborone was divided into two constituencies, Gaborone North and Gaborone South. A third seat in Parliament was given to a member elected for the whole city of Gaborone. In January 1993, two new constituencies were created: Gaborone West and Gaborone Central. For local government elections, the four constituencies were divided into wards. Gaborone North had seven, Gaborone West had seven. Gaborone Central had six, and Gaborone South had five.[36] In 2002, the city had five constituencies: Gaborone North, Gaborone Central, Gaborone South, Gaborone West North, and Gaborone West South.[63]
An International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) was established on 24 July 2000 in Gaborone. The academy would provide training for middle managers for the countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).[64]
There are 21 diplomatic missions in Gaborone.

Gaborone - Driving out of town - Botswana

I took a drive on the A1 highway out of town. The road has undergone some upgrades recently which have definately improved its quality. The road is predominantly a dual carriage way on both sides. The road leads to the towns of Lobatse and further to South Africa in Mafikeng (road name changes in South Africa). The road also provides an off ramp to several villages and small towns such as Ramotswa, which also has a border into South Africa. I just wanted to take a look at some of the quality of the roads around.

Discover GABORONE with Tinashe: The Beautiful Capital City of BOTSWANA

The city of Gaborone is buzzing and ever lively in the early hours of the morning around 6 am. As many make their way to work and school. In the morning traffic, there is patience and understanding between drivers though a few casualties of cars breaking down, etc. We are often taught culturally at homes as a lifestyle hack and that too a cultural norm amongst young women, to awaken early and do the due duties then. This was to allow for immense rest in the mid day, when the sun is at its peak. Out of this norm , most awaken early to begin work or school as early as possible, because the midday fills anyone with fatigue as the heat is extensive. This has grown embedded in our lifestyles and has become a part of daily life. At the hours of 7 am to 9am, one can have the savior of having breakfast on the go, a nice round fat cake, or flatbread (which is very different from the Indian flatbread) if hurrying to work is the main priority. Additionally, many breakfast shops are open and serving breakfast at this hour.

For any commuter, driving from the suburban towns and district into the city, it is advisable to wake up about two hours before depending upon the transport schedules of that area. Typically, from district to district/ city or town to city commuting, 24-30-seaters (sprinters) are the fastest to commute with because of their agility to time. However, still, there are buses of larger capacities that travel into the city. All these buses, sprinters, minibuses commonly known as combis arrive and depart from one place in the city into various other places in the city. This way one can easily know that if they are at the central point of departure and arrival they are much exposed to all the transport routes to any part of the country.

The country of Botswana is widely known for its exports on beef and beef products. This is because there is a large number of cattle on the land. Culturally, cattle are known to represent wealth and social status and still are today. The average farmer who is able to turn herds of cattle into investment and production is wealthy indeed and is ranked at high social status in the city. Although industrialization and corporate worlds seem, on the surface, to have eradicated farm life, the reality is that these farmers are found as the big investors in companies and may hold political influence. Due to this respect of nature, cattle are never really held in constriction but rather respected in the city and whereabouts as part of nature. It is difficult to hear of cattle theft or herd theft or goat theft because these are abundant in the country. The existence of cattle is seen as a normal part of life and regarded as a normal aspect of the nature around us. So much so that even in our urban areas, if a herd of cattle decides to cross the road, road traffic stops to allow them to cross the road. They are of substantial importance to our heritage and currency and still play a big role in traditional weddings and proceedings.

Gaborone CBD - Rainy drive - Botswana

I took a trip to Botswana over the Easter weekend. Here's some footage of a quick drive in the capital city of Botswana, Gaborone. The CBD area is newly built and has new buildings. There is still a lot of construction taking place. It was a cloudy day and drizzling a little bit, so I had to use the wipers.

Botswana 2020 Behind-the-scenes (Part 1 of 2) - Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

In February 2020 we travelled overland to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks in Botswana to film the desert wildlife of the Kalahari and the zebra migration during the rainy season. In this short film, I hope to show you a bit about what goes into filming high resolution content in the remote African wilderness. This is my first behind-the-scenes video, so please let us know in the comments if you would like me to make more of this kind of content.

The adventure starts in Hermanus, near the Southern tip of Africa. Since my usual assistant was unable to come on this trip, my mother kindly offered to join and help with the driving. We travelled via the Karoo into Botswana and on to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. In the CKGR we camped for 3 nights in Deception Valley filming desert wildlife, birds, lions and cheetahs. Then we travelled West to Tau Pan Camp where we spent most of our time on the pan itself, filming the herds of wildebeest, gemsbok (oryx) and springbok, as well as a beautiful male lion, a cheetah, a giraffe, bat-eared foxes, and black-backed jackals. After a few nights at Tau Pan, we moved East again to Leopard Pan, where we camped for a 3 more nights. From Leopard Pan, they visited the small copse of trees where Mark and Delia Owens camped in the 1970s. They later wrote the book 'Cry of the Kalahari' about this experience.

After more sightings of lions and other Kalahari birds and animals, we headed out of the park. In part 2 of this series we visit Boteti River Camp, near the gate of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park as well as South Camp in Nxai Pan National Park.

Part 2:

Filmed on Red Weapon Magnesium, GoPro Hero 8, DJI Mavic Pro, and Samsung Gear 360.
