Bicycle Touring Ep. 5: Where Did All The Water Go?

Utah on a bicycle was epic and harsh. Hot days and freezing nights put our gear to the test, but that climate also created some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes. Scenic Highway 95 brought us to an incredible corner of the National Park system - Natural Bridges, Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase, dinosaur tracks, and ancient ruins.

We met some amazing people along the way (hi Jim & Margie; Jim & Jona; DeeDee & Dan; Bob & Sue; Earl & Cynthia; Deborah & Bob!!).

There is so little water left in the desert southwest, but everything you see has been carved out by the persistent power of water. We aim to cherish and respect the resource while continuing our adventure through the Western USA!

Our Most Remote Bikepacking Route Yet // Cycling to Argentina 11

Nine months into our journey cycling from Alaska to Argentina, we load up with 30L of water for one of our most remote stretches yet.
From Tonopah, Nevada into the heart of Death Valley National Park, and then onwards to the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. We go from the biting cold one day, to shorts, t-shirt and flip flops the next! It appears the long winter may be over for us

*About*

In July 2022, we set off from the very top of Alaska on our bicycles, with the aim of spending the next few years cycling all the way down to the southern tip of Argentina - the entire length of the Americas. We are definitely not in any rush, and often opt to take the scenic, more remote routes where possible. Neither of us are cycle touring or bikepacking experts, but we are figuring all of that stuff out as we go. If you would like to follow along, please consider subscribing!

The Gibb: Australia's Remote West ᐅ Adventure Motorcycle Riding Australia

The Gibb River Road, also locally known as the Gibb is roughly 660km long and runs through the remote northwest of Australia in the Kimberley region. Build in the 1960s to transport cattle from stations the size of small countries, the road is today one of the most iconic Outback adventures.

Bicycle Touring Ep. 8: Oasis on the Colorado River

We got our kicks on Route 66....and also a few flat tires! We traveled down the historic Route 66 as we made our way westward from the Grand Canyon. We pushed 60+ miles 4 days in a row to set up camp at the Arizona Hot Springs, just below Hoover Dam.

This spot is a must see where we enjoyed the cool waters of the Colorado River during the day then retreated to the 100+ degree hot springs in the cool evenings.

Every night the Colorado River rapidly rose from releases out of the Hoover Dam. We heard tales of lost watercrafts and hard paddles upstream.

Check out the blog for more details of this little known oasis on the Colorado:

Bicycle Touring Ep. 14: We Found the #1 User of the Colorado River

We finally made it to Imperial Valley, California. Land of eternal sunshine, fertile land, and tons of water issues! What's the source for the these crops? The Colorado River!

The solution to keeping the Colorado River healthy and flowing becomes more and more complicated every time we learn another sector or city's story.

It was a beautiful part of the country to ride through! The Salton Sea was the WEIRDEST body of water we have ever been to...and it turns out the Imperial Valley and Salton Sea are completely interrelated!

Lots to learn....

Bicycle Touring Ep. 4: The MOST Difficult Stretch Yet

On our way from Colorado to Utah we experience some extreme weather and our longest haul yet! The different ruin sites of the Ancient Puebloen people make us speculate about the water sources that they utilized, and what might have caused their sudden exodus.

Be sure to visit the blog to see the detailed route we've traveled so far and dive into more info on the water we've encountered along the way!

Bicycle Touring Ep. 9: Vegas on the Dollar Baby

Most bicycle tourists don't have the biggest budgets...so we show you how to experience and visit Las Vegas in the most sustainable and financially responsible way possible!

First step is to find a WarmShowers host. ( There are numerous people in the city willing to host responsible, respectful bicycle tourists and that saves you on cost of living expenses.

Then hit any of the thrift stores to outfit yourself for going out on the town instead of carrying nicer clothes! The thrift stores often have tags indicating a sale on any given day, this will help you save even more on your purchase.

Sarah relied on creativity and available resources to create some center pieces for our Thanksgiving celebration. We were given permission by our WarmShowers host to use the plants in her yard to make these arrangements, in lieu of purchasing flowers that would decompose days later.

Vegas and the surrounding area had miles of bike lanes - but there are not any on the Strip! Prepare to park your bike blocks away, or in a random place. There is a great bus system as well. Or you can spring for a taxi/Uber and avoid the bike lock up hassle. We made it work on bicycles though.

We have another video from Las Vegas coming soon. We had the chance to interview multiple water authority personnel to get a deeper look at the water issues facing the Colorado River and this huge desert city! Stay tuned :)

Check out the blog for all the details about where we went and the water stories along the way!

Bicycle Touring Ep. 6: How Did This Happen?

Our travels have led us through the heart of the Southwest following the water source that has made civilization possible. We had a chance to see the current lake levels at Lake Powell upstream in Hite, UT and downstream in Page, AZ.

We had so much climbing to and from these areas!! It was amazing scenery and made for a unique look at the epic Southwest USA. We really learned to appreciate the water we had!

We got the chance to experience the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, we were able to experience the river from this perspective all thanks to Colorado River Discoveries. Travel The Rockies sponsored our trip and we just had a splash!

If you are looking for an adventure in the Wyoming area, check out Travel the Rockies! They know the best outfitters, guides, and lodge owners in the Rockies... the roughest West:

Bicycle Touring Ep. 7: How to do Breakfast at the Grand Canyon

We show you how we do breakfast and dishes in a way that minimizes water use on the road. We had a great time at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon with all of the hiker/biker amenities.

We are reunited with Nick and Lauren as well as the Colorado River. After some amazing hikes and conversations with park staff, we gained a better understanding of where the park sources it's water for the 4+ million visitors that enjoy the park each year.

The Grand Canyon faces numerous threats to the natural beauty of the park and river, which we will touch upon in our blog. These controversial issues include uranium mining operations in the park and the development of a casino and tramway near the confluence of the Little Colorado River and the Colorado River, located on the Navajo Reservation.

Bicycle Touring Ep. 10: Mirage in the Desert

We were very surprised to find world-class water conservation initiatives in the city of EXCESS - Las Vegas. It is always the poster child of wasted water in the dry, desert West.

Numerous water facility tours and interviews throughout Las Vegas led us to the understanding that this town actually leads the West in how to grow while decreasing water use.

Another surprise was the amazing hiking and outdoor experiences Las Vegas could offer! We explored the Clark County Wetlands Park and did some hiking out at Red Rocks with our new friends Ellen & Karen.

Be sure to check out the blog to find out more details on the conservation efforts of this major desert city- Nevada actually has the smallest portion of allocated water from the Colorado River. Those Bellagio fountains aren't as bad looking as we thought ;)

Bicycle Touring Ep. 11: Rolling on Down the River

We finally left Las Vegas to continue the journey towards the mouth of the Colorado River...except we went North first to explore Valley of Fire State Park! It was worth the ride out and back.

After cruising a tailwind into Lake Havasu City, we find out the London Bridge is in this Arizona town! This lake's importance to the water supply in both Phoenix & LA makes it pretty strategic on the Colorado River. There was even a standoff between Arizona's Governor and the feds when the Parker Dam was being constructed! Be sure to check out the blog to find more details.

Bicycle Touring Ep. 13: Hiking, Biking, & New Shoes?! in Joshua Tree

It still surprises us how everywhere we go there are water stories to find, you just need to look. We crossed in to California and spent four days cycling through Joshua Tree National Park. Many people merely drive through, but there is so much to explore where the Mojave Desert meets the Colorado Desert. We steered away from the Colorado River briefly to see the majestic desert and it's scarcity of water.

Between the biking and hiking, we installed a solar panel with our host in Twentynine Palms, found some free shoes, and outran a rain storm.

We're headed back to the Salton Sea and Imperial Valley next! The last stop of the Colorado River is in Mexicali, Mexico. Wait for the next video for a glimpse into our first international travel!!

Bicycle Touring Ep. 1: How to Start a Bicycle Touring Adventure!

Transitioning from the typical American lifestyle to one focused on conservation, adventure, and living simply on bicycles. We had an amazing trip out to the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico to start the cycling - we skipped over West Texas to get to the mountains!

Here's our send off weekend and the beautiful sights along the way! Check out our blog ( to find links to the places we went, detailed gear lists, and the trials we've endured and how we coped...or didn't ;)

Bicycle Touring Ep. 3: Lessons from an Apache Chief

We had a cosmic encounter with the Chief of the Jicarilla Apache Nation on our way from Chama, NM to Durango, CO. He and his friends gave us much more than words of wisdom, and we learned the true meaning of hospitality!

Chief Reynard Faber gave us permission to use far off images of the Gojiiya Feast. He has an amazing autobiography, FRONTRUNNER: The Story of an Apache Indian, you should check it out!

On our bicycle journey we also uncovered the complicated water systems of the region. It's not easy to understand how some of the major cities and water users in northern New Mexico get their water needs satisfied. Be sure to check out the blog for more details on the transmountain movement of water through the Azotea Tunnel. Does it affect you?

Bicycle Touring: His & Her Gear Overview

It's been over 3 months bicycle touring and we slimmed down our gear load! It's enough to be somewhat comfortable long term touring, but it's a pretty light load! We walk you through what we are currently carrying and display all our gear according to the pannier they live in. We also showcase the bicycles and the modifications we've made for a comfortable ride.

We plan to link the gear items to our website for easy reviews! Check out the blog for the details:

Palisade, Colorado is a fertile oasis in Colorado's western slope desert landscape, famous for its peaches and wine.

Palisade sits along the Colorado River right outside of Grand Junction, on the other side of Glenwood Canyon, where the desert landscape begins.

The land is rich from the mix of nutrients in the soil and water, and thanks to this with the combination of hot days and cool nights, the growing here is just right for plump, delicious fruit.
