Best Singapore Documentary (full)

This is the complete documentary produced and directed by David Whitefield Jones of VisualWorks Inc. for Fodor's and Travel World Video in 1989-99. I spent months in Singapore researching to produce an in depth travel film rather than a quick once over. This is a fine film and just the stuff that hit the cutting room floor would make a fascinating film. The firewalking festival of Thimithi for the Goddess Daupadi, a Chinese Wayang or Opera for the God's birthday, burning joss household luxury items and clothing to send to ancestors - amazing stuff. Also Jurong Bird Park, Sentosa Island, Singapore Zoo, Newton Circus, Raffles, Pulau Seking, a Geomancer working, eating Betelnut, and coverage of all of the cultures from the Brits to the Malays, The documentary was shot by a Hungarian crew and I post-produced in Budapest, Hungary. If your company needs help with effective and memorable marketing, sales, training, or other media, please contact me at david@visualworksinc.com. Thanks for watching.

The Best Airport In The World: Singapore Changi Airport | Insider Business

Singapore's Changi Airport has won Skytrax's best airport award 12 times. It secured the title with its $1.3 billion Jewel and world-famous amenities.

Editor's Note: At 1:44 in the video, we say the Rain Vortex waterfall runs 24-7. This is misstated. The waterfall is turned on from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Also, at 5:29, a Singaporean dish is referred to as chicken and rice. That is incorrect. It is called Chicken Rice. Insider regrets the errors.

Singapore Soul | A Cinematic Travel Film

This our love letter to Singapore. We are leaving this month, but have been in Singapore for 8 years and have felt such a special connection to the city. The people, the food and the huge mix of cultures has been such a special place for us to meet and call our home.

I get tired of people saying this city has no soul, because our experience of Singapore has been very different. The problem though, is that most marketing does nothing but highlight cookie cutter tourism as if Singapore is some sort of adult theme park. Don’t get me wrong, I love Marina Bay Sands, and who doesn’t love Chili Crab, or riding around in a sidecar, but this is nail polish on a city that has a lot more going on culturally than travel sites give it credit for.

The hawker centres, the sub-cultures and the creators define the city’s soul, and these people and their crafts should be celebrated. In Japan, if a chef has been making sushi his entire life, he’s a master. I visited Rome recently and the sculptors and philosophers are like prophets. I’d love to see Singapore doing more to elevate the creators in the city. It’s hard not to be blown away by MBS or the Jewel, but Singapore’s soul is in a rocket fuelled cup of kopi, or a loud auntie’s fresh bowl of noodles.

This video for us is like a parting gift. It represents months and months of shooting and editing, but to say it was all hard work would be a lie. This video gave us a greater connection to the city and we loved spending time with the people we featured.

Video is such a great medium. Not only for changing mindsets, but I also love the idea that this will be uncovered in years to come, and people will get an insight into what it was like to live today, almost like a cultural artifact. I just hope that some of the crafts are kept alive and that future generations can take inspiration from the elders that have given this city its soul.
