Morocco: A Country Of Captivating Colors And Cultures | Somewhere On Earth

The country of Morocco has been influenced by Arab, European, and African cultures throughout many centuries. See how three people live their lives in among the unique culture and warm scenery, starting with Abdullah, who lives in Taliouine, and shows us the secrets of saffron, a spice worth more than gold. We then meet French nurse Julie, living in the valley of the high atlas, working in one of the most remote environments in the country to care for its communities. And finally Ali and Lahof, the guides of the Sahara, who travel as the merchants used to hundreds of years ago.

MOROCCO TRAVEL DOCUMENTARY | The Grand Moroccan Roadtrip

► ITINERARY + GPS TRACKS -
► SUPPORT - 'Buy us a refill of diesel' -

Follow us on our Grand Moroccan Roadtrip!
From sweeping sand dunes to desolate highways of emptiness, bustling cities, and snow-covered peaks, we explored Morocco from north to south and east to west. Driving more than 10,000 km in eight weeks, our roadtrip included many unforgettable adventures. Watch as we explore remote landscapes, climb high peaks, battle breath-taking dust-topias (double pun, yeah!), and navigate the hectic bustle of Morocco’s major cities.

Thank you:
A big THANK YOU goes to Saloua Dabhi who helped tremendously with pronouncing Moroccan names. Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

Arakmaja - A Moroccan Surf Documentary

Arakmaja is a documentary about Morocco’s surfing culture.

This journey introduces us to people and stories sharing one common thread: the genuine passion for the art of riding waves.

A journey lived through Redouane’s surfing and through the words of pioneer Randolph Benzaquen and shapers Thierry Delbourg and Tarik Zrilida.

Morocco has been, for the last half century, a mystical destination for generation of surfers. While in the last years mass surf tourism has exploded, small family businesses and passionate local surfers like the Regragui’s still embody the genuine essence of a young and vibrant surfing culture.

???????? Documentary: Discover a rare cooking from the depths of Moroccan villages @MoroccanStreetFood

The villages of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco are characterized by serving delicious and satisfying foods that reflect the culture and traditions of the local people. Village food in this region reflects the balance between ingredients available in the mountain environment and skills passed down through generations. The whistling language is a means of communication between the population in these isolated mountainous areas.

In village food in the Atlas Mountains, simple, natural ingredients combine to form delicious and nutritious meals. The diet is based on local and seasonal produce, such as grains, legumes, vegetables, meat and dairy products.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO (2023) | 10 BEST Things To Do In & Around Marrakech

Marrakech is located in the center of Morocco. With its vibrant colors, buzzing atmosphere, mix of tradition and modernity, and aromatic smells, it’s a city like no other: Marrakech truly stimulates all your senses at once.

10. Explore the Marrakech medina (free walking tour)
The medina is the heart of the Marrakech, packed with shops, traditional houses called “riads”, restaurants, and many of the historic sites.

☑️ Free walking tour:

???? WHERE TO STAY IN THE MEDINA:
- Riad Basma (where we stayed - budget option):
- Palais Dar Donab (more luxurious):

9. Try the traditional local food
Some staples you have to try include couscous, meat brochettes, and the most iconic dish of all: tagine.

8. Visit the Saadian Tombs
The Saadian Tombs are a 16th century burial ground of the Saadian dynasty, which ruled over Marrakech between 1524 and 1668.

7. Find peace at the Majorelle Gardens

6. Stroll around Mellah Jewish Quarter
There are still a number of Jewish places here, including the Lazama Synagogue, the Miara Jewish Cemetery, and the Spice Market.

What makes the souks in Marrakech remarkable is the wide variety of exotic items you can buy, such as babouches, lanterns, ceramics, carpets, and leather goods.

☑️ Different souks in Marrakech:

The Saadian Ruler Al-Mansour who was buried in the Saadian Tombs built this grand palace in the 16th century.

Staying with this Amazigh family was a highlight of my time in Morocco. The Berbers - locally they prefer being referred to as the Amazigh people - are a North African community with their own culture and language: Tamazight. The family I stayed with isn't necessarily representative of the Amazigh community at large, but they are part of a sizeable community of people who live in the Atlas Mountains, far from the busy and vibrant cities of Morocco.

Some of Our Favorite Travel Videos We Think Other Travelers Would Love

Our Travel Gear:
Microsoft Surface, Travel Laptop: We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

Camera Sony Alpha Series: We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

Western Dynamics 4 TB external hard drive. This let's you save your pictures and videos from your SD cards while you travel without having to use a computer.

Manfrotto Tripods: We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Our Packs/Luggage: Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.
