Located close to the Garraf Massif, it is known for its beaches, thriving gay community, nightspots, and historical sites.
The town became a centre for the 1960s counterculture in mainland Spain and became known as Ibiza in miniature.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Spain - Part V - Sitges - 4K

During this episode in our multi-part Spain series, Shawn and Kevin of Travel by Numbers visit Sitges - a coastal town in Spain's Catalonia region, about 35 minutes southwest of Barcelona by commuter train..

Sitges is known for its microclimate that provides 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s Mediterranean beaches and a grand seafront promenade lined with mansions. Old town and the surrounding streets are filled with shops, restaurants, and many gay bars and nightclubs. Sitges has more than 28,000 inhabitants, of whom about 30% are non-native, which gives the town a very special international character and charm.

The town became a centre for the 1960s counterculture in mainland Spain and became known as Ibiza in miniature”. Sitges has also been referred to as the Saint-Tropez of Spain.

Today, the Sitges economy is based on tourism and culture offering more than 4,500 hotel beds, of which half are in four-star hotels. Sitges remains a classy destination: a glut of galleries and museums belie its demure size.

A wide pedestrian boulevard stretching along the waterfront is one of the most scenic walks to be enjoyed in Sitges. Lined with cafés, restaurants and ice cream shops, there are plenty of opportunities for refreshment, and unlike nearby Barcelona, all of the shops are allowed to open on Sundays.

Noted for its outstanding location, the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, at the end of the promenade in a bastion above steps and a coastal cliff, has become one of the most recognized, photographed and painted icons in Sitges. The 17th century church has 2 bell towers with architecture in a Baroque style. The interior features several Renaissance and Baroque altars and a pipe organ dating back to 1690.

Sitges charms with 17 gorgeous Golden Coast sand beaches. Four of them are in the east, 11 are in the town and easily reached on foot from the promenade, and the remaining 2 are to the west and are difficult to access. 3 of the 17 are nudist beaches. Six of the beaches were honoured recently with the ISO 14001 certification for the quality of water, sand, cleaning services, and the provision of lifesaving services.

In June, Sitges cranks up the volume to become one big shirtless beach party. It’s Europe’s most famous gay holiday destination. The Gay Village is right on the seafront. There are 23 gay bars and they’re open from 4pm until late.  Sitges bars get busy after a day at the beach from 5pm. Terraces fill up. Then before dinner drinks at 8.30pm. By midnight, all the bars are full during the Summer. Check out the beach flyers during the day for the parties that night! Clubs get busy from 3am.

Sitges has always been characterized by its tolerance, both of the locals and open-mindedness of visitors too. It's definitely a lively village where all people are welcome regardless of race, colour, religion or sexual orientation.
