Najaf also is known as Baniqia is a city in central-south Iraq about 160 km south of Baghdad. Its estimated population over One Million people.
What is Najaf Famous for? The city is now a center of pilgrimage throughout the Shi'ite Islamic world. It is estimated that only Mecca and Medina receive more Muslim pilgrims. (1) Even though the safety situation has calmed down, there are still security considerations which you have to be aware of.
(2) The Iraqis I met are overwhelmingly excited to welcome tourists into their country.
(3) I got treated nearly everywhere I went - whether for a Careem Ride (equivalent of Uber / Grab), free food at restaurants, free entry into the Baghdad Aqua Park and Baghdad Zoo.
