With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Finland is a Northern European nation bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia. Its capital, Helsinki, occupies a peninsula and surrounding islands in the Baltic Sea. Helsinki is home to the 18th-century sea fortress Suomenlinna, the fashionable Design District and diverse museums. The Northern Lights can be seen from the country's Arctic Lapland province, a vast wilderness with national parks and ski resorts.

Best Foods to Try in Helsinki, Finland
As the capital of Finland, Helsinki is a Nordic foodie heaven full of delicious foods to try, including Finnish staples like mushrooms, berries, salmon, and rye bread. Finns are known for their love of nature so you'll find that the culinary scene here emphasizes where food comes from and how it's produced. In this video, I'm sharing seven of the best foods and restaurants in Helsinki from budget-friendly to splurge-worthy. We visit a sustainable restaurant called Ultima where you can experience the future of food production. The best cinnamon buns in Helsinki (with the most picturesque view) are at Cafe Regatta. If you want to splurge on an unforgettable meal of Finnish fine dining with a twist then dinner at Finnjävel is a must. You also have to try a bowl of salmon soup, which is traditional Finnish fare, and the bouillabaisse at the Market Hall which sells out early. You can even dine in a former prison that's been converted to a restaurant and hotel. If you fancy a fresh and tasty döner in Helsinki then the best is at Döner Harju. Finland or Suomi is the land of eternal sunshine in the summer, more lakes than you can imagine, and possibly the grossest candy on the planet? Finland is an amazing country to visit and whether it is the breathtaking nature, the kind yet quiet Finnish people, or the endless times you will visit the sauna there will always be things that may shock a tourist when they visit Finland.
10 Things That Shock Tourists about Visiting Finland
1. The Sauna Culture: Do expect to head into a sauna during your time in Finland. It is such a part of the culture that people have them built into their homes, and yes do expect to go naked and run out and jump into the snow for a little extra fun.
2. The Finns Can Talk While Inhaling: the Finns have so much to say when they do talk that they actually can talk while they exhale and while they inhale. Quite a sight when you see it for the first time.
3. The Natural Beauty of Finland: from the lakes and forests to the parks and islands Finland boasts a ton of nature and the locals love it. So whether it is skiing in Lapland or mushroom hunting or visiting the archipelago islands you will see so much beauty in Finland.
4. How Quiet the Finns Can Be: the Finns enjoy silence and you will see that in stores, on the street, and especially on public transportation. So do keep it down.
5. How Clean Finland Is: from pristine forests, to amazing clean and crisp air, to the locals having pride and keeping their cities and towns clean, Finns do love a clean country. Oh, and never wear your shoes in someones house.
6. Finnish Tasty Treats: Salmiakki is the child of black licorice and salt, and I mean that in the least tastiest way possible. The Finns love salmiakki candy (and Finland has a ton of great candy aside form Salmiakki). So be prepared for some great tasty treats, like their cinnamon rolls and anything made with mushrooms and do watch out for the funny ones.
7. How Difficult the Finnish Language Is: luckily for tourists most Finns speak very good English, so you do not need to speak any Finnish. The Finnish language is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn and when you see all those vowels you will understand why.
8. The Cities Have Two Names: in Finland, Finnish and Swedish are the two official languages and so all the signs on the highway are in Finnish and Swedish. This can lead to a bit of confusion when the cities don't have similar names in both languages, for example Turku is Turku in English and Finnish, but Abo in Swedish.
9. Finnish Logic: for as smart and clever as the Finns are some foreigners sometimes get lost in Finnish logic. When you see something around the country that just doesn't quite make sense, just chalk it up to Finnish logic.
10. You Have to Go to a Government Store to Buy Hard Alcohol: if you want to grab a bottle of Finlandia Vodka in Helsinki you can't just head to the local grocery store. You have to go to Alko, the government run liquor store. The prices are high and the hours are strange, but it is the only place to go.

As of 2022, Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world five years in a row
And Helsinki has been named the happiest city in the world in 2020, as well as the top city in the world for a happy retirement in 2021. I traveled to Helsinki to find out why.
Finland isn’t known for its happy people. It’s known for sauna and vodka, and for being a cold country, only matched by the coldness of its people. Finnish people don’t express much feeling, and the suicide rate in Finland is second highest in the Nordics. Despite that, it's ranked as the happiest country in the world - so what's their secret?
In this video I explore Helsinki and I show you some of the amazing architecture you can see in the city. The Helsinki Cathedral, the Uspenski Cathedral, the Finalandia Hall, and the lovely Esplanade Park, Esplanadi.
I also show you various things to see and do in the city, like Korkeasaari Zoo, the Linnanmäki amusement park, and Suomenlinna, or Sveaborg, a maritime fortress from the 1700s. I also go into details about Finnish food, such as karjalan piirakka - a delicacy...even though it doesn't look like one.
Aside from this I also discuss the history and origins of Helsinki, and the troublesome past it has had. In the end, maybe I'll even get to an answer to the question: why is Helsinki the happiest city in the world?

CRAZY FRESH Salmon and Top Things to Do in Helsinki, Finland
I just visited Helsinki for the third time this year. This time I tried some crazy fresh salmon and visited the top things to do in Helsinki during winter!

I started my journey to Helsinki from Singapore, flying with Finnair in Business Class. When I arrived in Helsinki I took the train to the city center and went straight to my hotel, Klaus K Hotel.
My friend Meri picked me up and took me to see some of the must visit sites in the city. From Cafe Regatta, to the Kaisma Museum to Helsinki's Cathedral and many more sites.
For lunch I went to the Old Market Hall to try some crazy fresh salmon. First I tried a few different pieces of raw salmon and to stay warm I decided to eat a salmon soup. The soup was out of control!

1. Helsinki Cathedral. Located in Senate Square in the center of town, it's is one of Helsinki’s best known landmarks.
2. Market square. Most international and famous market in the city where you can find traditional foods and treats, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs.
3. Finnish Food. What to eat in Helsinki? Our particular meal was a lunch at the market square with traditional, delicious, flavorous delicacies. Salmon Soup and moose meat pie please!
4. South Harbour. It is a bay and harbor area immediately next to Helsinki city centre. The harbor is surrounded by restaurants and cafes where you can grab a seat and watch all the activities.
5. Street music. You will have a chance to listen to great different live music for free of charge while walking on streets of Helsinki.
6. Esplanade Park. A place where tourists and Helsinki residents come to take picnics, relax and be entertained in summer.
7. Uspenski Cathedral. Also famously known as the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe.
8. Hietaniemi beach. If you like sand beaches, with music and beach volleyball near the city centre this is the place for you!
9. Nuuksio National park. About one hour away from the heart of Helsinki, you’ll leave the busy city and inhale the freshest air of Finnish nature. You’ll also witness some of the finest Finnish sceneries, forest and lakes. The north is not to be missed.
10. Porvoo. A comfortable and enjoyable 45 minute ride through spectacular landscapes will give you the chance to admire the Finnish countryside.
