BBC How to Build a Cathedral

The Lone Man Building a Cathedral By Hand

For 53 years, Justo Gallego has been building a cathedral by hand on the outskirts of Madrid almost entirely by himself. Gallego has no formal architecture or construction training, but that hasn't stopped him from toiling on this herculean task. At 90 years old, Gallego knows that he will not be able to finish the project in his lifetime. But he keeps at it anyway, day after day, driven by his faith.

DON JUSTO'S ONE MAN CATHEDRAL ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

I wrote about Don Justo building his cathedral back in 2013 for the Toronto Star. It was one of the most astounding things I'd seen in Spain. And finally I decided to make a video about it.

The place is remarkable -- 60 years of work of one man. Sadly, Don Justo is pretty infirm these days so has stopped working daily on the building. I suspect he hasn't got many years left. And they're working hard to get it converted to an official church.

Will it happen? Who knows - but it's certainly a unique place to visit if you're ever in Madrid.

To get out there, head to the Conde de Casal metro stop, and look for the 341 bus stop -- I've linked the precise map point below. It's only a few euros and 30 minutes each way. One of the bus stops is right alongside the cathedral - but even if you get off at the wrong stop, Mejorada isn't big.

You're supposed to pay a donation when you go in. If you want to support the building of the cathedral, head to where you can donate.

I suggest going in the morning, wandering around a little bit (it's open 7 days, all day), and then heading for long lunch at El Fogón de Manolo -- excellent food and a nice outdoor eating area.

Below is the link to the Google address for the bus in Madrid. Note that currently with COVID, you can't pay with cash. So you'll need to get a Multi card from the machines in the metro and fill it with tickets for B2 zone. If you're confused just say to the person in the Metro Mejorada del Campo, autobus, multi -- that should work!

The hidden world beneath the ancient Alhambra fortress - BBC REEL

The ancient fortress of the Alhambra has a fascinating history, passing from Moorish sultans to Catholic kings. Today it is one of Spain's most visited tourist attractions and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

However, very few know of the secret world of the Alhambra that lies unseen below the surface - a hidden network of tunnels and dungeons, off limits to tourists, that are still being uncovered and understood by archaeologists today.

The world's most beautiful building - Lincoln Cathedral

Catching title but to me Lincoln Cathedral is the most beautiful building there is - maybe along with the cathedrals of Salisbury and Exeter.
The main building stages were between 1072 and 1280. The rather menacing west front of the Norman period was later gothified. The east end is of a perfect blend of early decorated style.
At the end of the video there are a few shots of Lincoln Castle (housing a copy of the Magna Carta) and the Medieval Bishop's Palace (closed when I got there).

Drones: DJI Mini 2, additional footage DJI Osmo Pocket

Music: brilliant sky - theme for sarah Audiio.com

One Man Cathedral - The incredible story of Justo Gallego Martinez.

Justo Gallego Martinez, 95 years old from Spain, is the man who for more than 60 years has been building on his own, an incredible work of architecture, using only scrap material from the nearby industrial polygon.

To complete it and make sure it going to stay there in the future, there are some steep costs, legal and of manteinance.

We are helping Justo and Angel, by using several services on the internet, to achieve the sum required to save the incredible Cathedral of Mejorada del Campo (Madrid)

The largest Cathedral and Religious Building in Britain || Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Cathedral is the Cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool, built on St James's Mount in Liverpool, and the seat of the Bishop of Liverpool. It may be referred to as the Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool (as recorded in the Document of Consecration) or the Cathedral Church of the Risen Christ, Liverpool, being dedicated to Christ 'in especial remembrance of His most glorious Resurrection'. Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain, and the eighth largest church in the world.

The cathedral is based on a design by Giles Gilbert Scott and was constructed between 1904 and 1978. The total external length of the building, including the Lady Chapel (dedicated to the Blessed Virgin), is 207 yards (189 m) making it the longest cathedral in the world; its internal length is 160 yards (150 m). In terms of overall volume, Liverpool Cathedral ranks as the fifth-largest cathedral in the world[3] and contests with the incomplete Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City for the title of largest Anglican church building. With a height of 331 feet (101 m) it is also one of the world's tallest non-spired church buildings and the fourth-tallest structure in the city of Liverpool. The cathedral is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

The Anglican cathedral is one of two cathedrals in the city. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool is situated approximately half a mile to the north. The cathedrals are linked by Hope Street, which takes its name from William Hope, a local merchant whose house stood on the site now occupied by the Philharmonic Hall, and was named long before either cathedral was built.
