Avoid being STRANDED... MPG + Fuel Range for Overland Truck Camper??

One of the most boring yet essential aspects of overland travel is fuel range. Everyone wants to focus on making their rig look cool with suspension lifts, oversized off road tires, fancy wheels, bumpers, racks and more… Yet all these modifications ruin your mpg (fuel mileage) which limits how far you can travel.

I’ve built many off road vehicles and found that maintaining a minimum of 300 mile travel range is essential. However, getting your fuel range improved to over 400 miles is a game changer.

Figuring out your true travel range is helpful for planning remote trips. Document your actual MPG fuel mileage while traveling off road. It’s good to know how much fuel your vehicle really uses. Often people calculate range using their entire fuel tank size. This isn’t realistic as you need to keep some fuel in the tank! Deduct 2-3 gallons from your tank size and multiply it by your actual fuel mileage. This will give you a reasonable expectation for travel range.

There are options for carrying additional fuel from replacement fuel tanks, auxiliary tanks and fuel cans. Extra fuel needs to be carefully considered as it adds weight, takes space and can be expensive.

Carefully consider your vehicle modifications! It will determine where and how you travel…

Overland, MPG, Fuel & Tolls cost. How much?

So how much does it really cost to drive an Overland camper truck from the UK to Sicily in Southern Italy. My talk covers time scales, Miles, fuel costs, ferry costs, tolls and even campsites.. But I believe you'll be amazed at the cost... it's shocking!!! But the truth needs to be told.

Overland adventures are becoming more and more acceptable... there's a reason and its all down to a change in thinking and lifestyles... Pay as you go lifestyles are on the increase, why?

Towing with our Truck Camper! Let’s talk about MPG, Off Road, Weight… - Super Duty Build | Part 19

In this video we share our Truck Camper Towing thoughts and things to consider:

MPG – Your fuel mileage will suffer when towing. Wind drag, weight and rolling resistance all negatively affect your mpg and range. It’s important to know the towing MPG so you can appropriately plan refueling. We have seen 8-10 mpg over the past 3,000 miles this summer while towing. The truck camper is typically 10-12 mpg without the trailer.

Parking – Our total length is under 40 feet which makes it possible to park in two parking spaces. Keep in mind shorter is better for trailer parking. Parallel parking is more challenging due to the trailer tire width. The truck tires are 10-12” away when the trailer tires are touching the curb. Ideally, it’s best to have the trailer track width match the truck. Overall, parking can be a hassle and plan accordingly.

Driving – On-Road it’s fairly easy driving on Interstate highways. However, twisty mountain roads require more attention and careful driving. On narrow roads the trailer tires are nearly the full lane width. Off-Road travel is much slower! Turning around is a challenge. Rough terrain can limit travel. Biggest benefit is being about to “base camp” and drop the trailer for exploring.

Weight – Getting your scale weights is essential. Keep within your loaded trailer weight under the GVWR. Use a hitch scale to ensure 10% of the loaded trailer weight is on the tongue. The trailer hitch weight will transfer load from the truck front axle to the rear axle. Our 450lb trailer tongue weight increased the rear axle weight by 700lbs (250lbs transferred from the front axle). Stay within the GAWR (gross axle weight rating). Tire load capacity and PSI is essential for safety. Ensure your tire and wheel weight rating will support the axle weight. Then adjust your tire pressure for the weight you are carrying. Improper tire pressure is the number one cause of catastrophic tire failure.

Maintenance – Trailer wiring, hitch, chains and tires. Be sure to carry a matching spare tire. Check lug nut torque. Check tire pressure. Tire plug kit and air compressor can make many flat repairs painless.

Truck campers are excellent for towing trailers. It’s fun to bring a boat or toys on your adventures! But be mindful when preparing and cautious on your journey. Overall, we prefer the freedom of traveling without a trailer.

Which is Better for Overland?? Four Wheel Campers Popup VS Hardwall Northstar Liberty Truck Camper

Our first truck camper was purchased brand new! 2016 Four Wheel Camper Hawk model and it was installed on a 2016 Toyota Tundra. The plan was for a more comfortable “overland” adventure vehicle for week or two week long expedition off road trips. With the ability to remove the camper and have a functional truck. Video tour:

However, I never removed the camper during the 9 months of ownership and spent 160 nights in the camper during that time! I was hooked. But with all that travel the desire for improved comfort was growing. Top of the list was indoor toilet, indoor shower, quieter and better in inclement weather.

The replacement vehicle was a 2010 Winnebago View on the Mercedes Sprinter Chassis. Check out the tour video:

Now, we have a 2020 Northstar Liberty Truck Camper mounted on a 2020 Ford F250 Super Duty. There were many things we loved about the truck camper. We really wanted a usable truck for projects and an easier to mount/unmount camper with for comforts than the Four Wheel Camper Offered. Video Tour:

Pop-up Camper Benefits:
Lower Height
1-2mpg Better
Lower Weight
Narrower 80” vs 84”
Spacious Open Feeling

Hardwall Camper Benefits:
Less Condensation
Quieter Inside
Better Insulation
More Storage
Less Expensive w/ Features
Easier Loading/Unloading
Better Windows
Bathroom + Shower Space
Better Usable Kitchen

So which is best for you??

Overland Off Road Arizona – Expedition Truck Camper!

We decided to take the scenic route from Flagstaff to Prescott off road. This route starts just outside of Williams,Arizona and follows Forest Service Road FR354 to FR318 ending in Jerome, AZ. Then from there following 89A into Prescott.
This is an extremely scenic drive in Northern Arizona. Easily drivable by car or 4wd. Avoiding or after rain storm as the road is not actively maintained with steep drops and washes.

We had a great time testing the truck and camper on this mild route. Definitely recommend for a fun day trip!

How The Hell Did This Build Cost $229,694?

This is a video we wanted to make and didn't want to make all at the same time. But seeing a few nicely built campers coming up for sale in various groups and forums over the last few weeks along with the ensuing friendly discussion about if the price was fair or not, we decided to go ahead and make it. Not because we plan to sell, but to shine a little light onto what actually goes into a build like this. In this video we detail all of the major, and most of the minor expenses that went into building our 2021 RAM 3500 Four Wheel Camper Overland Explorer rig. We cover it end to end from the base vehicle purchase, to all the parts needed like the Norweld flatbed tray, Nitto tires, Method wheels, AEV parts, ARB lockers and compressor, and on and on. If you have ever wondered what the expense was to build this truck, you no longer have to wonder. It is all right here in detail.

Thank you for coming along on this journey with us and if you enjoy what we are doing please give us a like, a subscribe, and share it with others you think might like it as well.

Leavitt Lake – Truck Camper Off Road Overland!

Remote mountain lakes are incredible and they are even better when the access road requires a high clearance 4WD!

Leavitt Lake is around 9,600ft in elevation and is accessible from Leavitt Lake Road (Forest Service Road 077). However, it is gated at the bottom as snow often limits access until July. It’s a rough road that has multiple sections that can “wash out” and a couple shallow stream crossings. The road is fairly steep in sections and rocky. Not recommended for trailers. Camping is allowed but there are no services (no toilets) and haul in/out anything you bring (leave no trace). It can also get extremely windy – something to keep in mind if tent camping. Weekends can be busy during the summer with 20-40 vehicles. We saw anywhere from 10-20 vehicles arrive during the weekdays but only a handful camped overnight.

We hiked to Ski Lake which is just under 10,000ft in elevation. It’s fairly easy but a beautiful, worthwhile trail. The following day we hiked to Koenig Lake which is easily accessible and scenic. From there we hiked to Latopie Lake which is 10,400ft elevation and rather difficult. Extremely steep, loose and exposed but incredible views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It also leads to the Pacific Crest Trail.

We inflated the paddle boards and paddled multiple times every day. What a wonderful destination!

Buckles Mountain - Abandoned Road in a Truck Camper!

We decided to explore the backroads just north of Coeur d’Alene in the Panhandle National Forest. Our mapped route was just shy of 50 miles off road and promised to have some epic views.

Our first night of camping was in a forest road pull off that had been used as a shooting range and trash dump. This is really frustrating to see beautiful areas littered with trash. Haul out your trash! Nevertheless, we enjoyed the overnight parking and incredible late night storm including a terrific lightning show with torrential rain.

The next day the roads were rather saturated with scattered puddles. Faith discovered an old road to Buckles Mountain on the map. We thought it might offer views and decided to drive up. This proved rather challenging as the road had been abandoned and overgrown. It was slow progress with plenty of tree branch cutting and brush clearing but we prevailed.

Unfortunately, the summit views were completely blocked by trees. Above the trees was a fantastic view of the valley and lake. We camped for a couple night before completing the remainder of our backcountry route.

Fun adventure… more to come as we travel the backroads of Idaho!

Burnt Knob Fire Lookout Tower – Idaho BDR – Truck Camper Overland!

We’ve been traveling the Idaho BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) which passes the Burnt Knob Fire Lookout Tower. Of course, we had to detour from the route and check it out!

Lookout towers are hidden gems in the forest. It’s incredible to have roads (often drivable) to the top the tallest peaks often exposing epic views. Many towers have been destroyed over the years which makes discovering and exploring these historic structures a treasure hunt.

This lookout tower sits at 8,159 foot elevation and is especially unique being built on the top of a rock cliff. Rocks were stacked to help support and level the structure on the uneven rock slab. It’s overlooking 3 lakes with only hiking trail access.

We were amazed by the breathtaking beauty which is reminiscent of the granite slabs found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. What a treat!
