Visiting San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

For the past several days we've called San Pedro de Atacama home. This frontier town in the northern parts of Chile straddles the border with Bolivia and Argentina. It is an launching pad for a series of outdoors adventures that include excursions to nearby volcanoes, lagoons, deserts, lakes and more surreal landscapes. As such it is a popular hangout for backpackers and travelers to arrange these trips and tours. One can also do onward travel to Bolivia via a Uyuni Salt Flat tour or to Argentina all the way to Salta. We show you what the town is like including some of the main streets, squares, restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors. It's a dusty town with lots of friendly stray dogs.

Visiting San Pedro de Atacama, Chile Travel Video Transcript:

Good afternoon from the town of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. We've been here a few days taking a few different day trips to visit volcanoes and lagoons and see flamingos and doing lots of cool stuff. We've seen lots of wildlife, we've seen some amazing landscapes. And now we're going to show you the town. It's actually quite small and there isn't a lot to do but if you're taking tours from here you're going to end up spending a bit of time in San Pedro so yeah let's go take a little tour. A little walk around. Sounds good to me.

Bienvenidos a San Pedro de Atacama. Si! And this place is pretty cool because in the distance, in the background you can see volcanoes. You have volcanoes right over there. Let me run out to the street. There.

So next up we're going to take you down a street called Caracoles. And this is like the main street in the whole town. This is where you can find ice cream shops, bars, restaurants, tour operators, laundry places. Whatever you could need and that is over this way. This way. This way. Come.

What are your overall impressions of the town after having spent a few days here? Yeah, it's a decent place to hang out. This is not the kind of town where you come to linger. It's a launching pad for a whole bunch of other activities. You can also go to Bolivia to do the Uyuni salt flat tours as well. And you can also cross over to Argentina to go to Salta which is what we're going to do tomorrow. Yeah, so come here book a tour, take some trips and eat well. Yes.

And our last stop of this little tour of San Pedro is the main square. Yes. This is where you'll find live music and lot of dogs running around. Yeah, some live music is happening as we speak.

And that is a wrap from San Pedro. We are now finishing things off with a few clips from Carnival because 'yes' we're in the thick of carnival season. Ciao. Ciao ciao.

This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

Discover The Atacama Desert: Laguna Ceja, Moon Valley And San Pedro De Atacama

This 3 part series is a tour of the Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest place on earth! The Atacama Desert is incredible, a photographers paradise. We start by visiting the amazing VALLE DE LA LUNA, LAGUNA, CEJAR & San Pedro de Atacama. Our Self Drive Atacama Desert Tour will give you all the tips, ideas and advice for a safe and memorable self-drive stay in a place that is just out of this world!

Check out all our Chile Travel Guides at

Planning a trip outside your comfort zone is not always easy. Let us show you how accessible the Atacama Desert can be, and that doing a self-driving tour can not only give you the freedom to see what you want but is actually more cost-effective than booking all the tours available from San Pedro de Atacama the tourist hub of the desert.

In this first episode, we make our way to the Desert from Calama after hiring a car using and picking up some supplies at the local supermarket.
Lider Supermarket

Our accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama was the Planeta Atacama Lodge

San Pedro de Atacama is about 100km and a 1 hour 30-minute tarmac (easy) drive from Calama. The town has plenty of hotels, hostels and B&B's to suit all budgets. If you do have a car consider that the town does not have great parking facilities so pick a hotel that has a secure carpark if you can.

Food and Drink in San Pedro can be more expensive than in other Chilean towns and this is understandable considering everything has to be shipped in. There are still reasonable places to eat but not all are allowed to serve alcohol so check if that is important for you.

The Valle de la Luna Moon Valley is an incredible first-day experience and one not to be missed. Close to San Pedro, the off-road parts of the reserve are easy to navigate and help you get started with driving in this area. Remember to always carry water with you as you walk around, it's amazing how quickly you can become thirsty. Sunscreen and a hat also essential.

Link to the information centre for Valle de La Luna

Laguna Cejar 19km outside of San Pedro de Atacama is about a 30 to 40-minute drive on a dusty bumpy track it's quite expensive and unless you plan to swim in the salty water we would not suggest you bother going and save your 30,000 pesos for other areas.

San Pedro de Atacama Travel Guide - Chile beautiful Experience

San Pedro de Atacama Travel Guide - Chile beautiful Experience

San Pedro de Atacama is a town in Northern Chile. It's a very popular destination among Chilean tourists and international visitors alike. Visitors come in large numbers, to use the town as a stepping stone to the amazing landscapes around it. Most attractions are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, perhaps Chile's most varied and amazing national park. Prices in any of the laid back bars and restaurants fare well against Santiago's (Chile's Capital). Still, it's a fairly expensive location, as it's one of Chile's three most popular destinations, along Torres del Paine and Easter Island. Of note, many roads are unpaved, buildings are single story and the town feels a bit like in a Western movie. It is not a resort.

Once in the town, nearly all points of interest, restaurants, services, are within walking distance, with the exception of a few outlying hotels. Downtown comprises twelve small blocks, between the streets Domingo Atienza and Toconao from west to east, and Licancabur and Caracoles north to south. This last street is the main one, a pedestrian zone.

Geysers del Tatio, located at 4,200m above sea level, and 100km away from town, these are some of the highest geysers in the world. It's also the third-largest geyser site on Earth, with over 80 active ones. Most agencies travel there at 4 AM so as to arrive at sunrise. Valle de la Luna, there is a beautiful mirador (viewpoint) off the paved road to Calama that can be reached by car or bike. This is around km 83. You'll see a small hut off the road. Head towards the rocks that were put there to simulate chairs and tables. There is a bit a climbing with the bike from San Pedro. If the road incline is down for a significant duration then you have passed the viewpoint. This viewpoint is quite a bit after from the turnoff to Valle de la Luna.

Lagunas Altiplanicas, usually advertised as 'Altiplanic Lagoons', the tour varies very little, if at all, between agencies. You'll be visiting the village of Toconao, renowned for its church and bell-tower; Laguna Chaxa, a national reservation which three species of flamingos inhabit year-round.

Exploring San Pedro de Atacama

We spent two and a half days in the Atacama desert, in Northern Chile, finding a world unlike any other existing in the dry desert climate. We made the decision to visit two valleys in the surrounding areas, two vastly different landscapes in this surreal world.

The first was Valle Luna, which looks like another world; the valley is dry and full of salt deposits from a long-lost sea. The second valley was much different, green and lush, surrounded by dry desert about 40 minutes out of town, and it was nice to go for a hike in the cool fresh air.

Atacama Desert, Chile: The 2,000 Year Old Settlement of Tulor

Tulor is located 10 minutes outside of San Pedro de Atacama. Driving through Cuyo (a community of nine families), Tulor in Los Flamencos National Park is the site of the earliest known settlement in the area. It is properly known as the Aldea de Tulor and carbon dating fixes the origin between 380BC-200AD.

This village was once an important traffic and interchange port for llama caravans until an earthquake shifted the San Pedro River and its people moved. The settlement consisted of a series o circular, interconnecting structures which had different uses and functions according to archaeologists.

Stand, look at the unending vista of sand and salt and try to imagine a once green area that supported agriculture; I found it impossible.

More information:
The Atacama Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Atacama) is a desert plateau in South America covering a 1,600 km (990 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes Mountains running through Chile and Peru. The Atacama Desert is the driest nonpolar desert in the world, as well as the only true desert to receive less precipitation than the polar deserts and the largest fog desert in the world. Both regions have been used as experimentation sites on Earth for Mars expedition simulations. According to estimates, the Atacama Desert occupies 105,000 km2 (41,000 sq mi), or 128,000 km2 (49,000 sq mi) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. Most of the desert is composed of stony terrain, salt lakes (salares), sand, and felsic lava that flows towards the Andes.

The desert owes its extreme aridity to a constant temperature inversion due to the cool north-flowing Humboldt ocean current and to the presence of the strong Pacific anticyclone. The most arid region of the Atacama Desert is situated between two mountain chains (the Andes and the Chilean Coast Range) of sufficient height to prevent moisture advection from either the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean, a two-sided rain shadow.
