Armenian Street Smarts - Things To Avoid

Get more Tips here!
Armenia... The often overlooked nation has tons of activities to keep even the most discerning traveler happy through the duration of your stay. That said, it’s also possible to get into a little bit of trouble so here are some Armenian Street Smarts to keep you safe!

1. Don’t Be Afraid of the Locals
In general, Armenians are always very friendly when talking to visitors. They’re a warm-hearted people who will bend over backwards to help out a stranger. If you’re lost or you just have questions, consider asking a resident.

2. Don’t Take the Midday Buses
When in a big city like Armenia’s capital of Yerevan, the buses in the middle of the day are always super crowded to the point that finding a seat is basically impossible. Instead, take the city’s underground transit. It’s just as inexpensive and much quicker.

3. Don’t Stay in the Cities All the Time
Armenian cities are great, but if you skip the nation’s gorgeous countryside, you’re not getting the most of your trip. Consider taking a vacation to some of the world’s oldest wineries.

4. Don’t Go to Bed Early
Especially when you’re spending some time in a big city, be sure to take a little late night trip to one of the inner city’s thriving cafes. They’re a perfect opportunity for a little bit of people watching.

5. Don’t Skip the Vernissage
These open air markets are scattered throughout Armenia. They’re a great place to find some homegrown crafts like jewelry, woodwork, paintings, and a whole lot more. These artisan-crafted treasures are perfect souvenirs for pretty much any traveler.

5 Things NOT To Do in Armenia

Get more Tips here!
Armenia.
Heritage of the Kardashians and supposed resting place of Noah's Ark. However, for a hiccup free vacation there, follow these things not to do when you’re hitting the road in Armenia.

1. Don’t Expect Everyone to Speak English
A lot of people throughout Armenia will speak some English with you. But it’s pretty pompous to expect them to understand you. Just take the time to memorize a few easy phrases like “hello” = Բարեւ 'Barev'

2. Don’t Skip a Picnic
Armenia is absolutely filled with incredible wine, cheese, fruits and veggies. If you have the opportunity, it’s never a bad idea to grab some delectable goodies and have a nice, lazy picnic in a public area.

3. Don’t Forget To Do Some Research
If you’re an American, it's likely that your average history class didn’t exactly spend tons of time talking about Armenian culture. So, before you travel there do a little research as the locals will appreciate the passing familiarity with their culture.

4. Don’t Discount Some Adventure Travel
If you’re in Armenia to sit back, look at the scenery and drink some wine, then you came to the right place. But there are plenty of extreme sports available like skiing, rock climbing and even paragliding.

5. Don’t Miss Out on the Churches
Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity and is also home to Mt. Ararat — the place where Noah’s Ark supposedly made landfall. As a result the country is home to some of the world’s oldest and most beautiful Christian churches.

5 Money No-nos in Armenia

Get more Tips here!
The next time you’re in the mood for a trip to a jaw-droppingly gorgeous country, consider a cost-effective and world-changing vacation to scenic, lovely Armenia. However, don't forget these 5 things NOT to do with your money in Armenia.

1. Don’t Let the Shop Owners Up Sell You
In Armenian shops, the owners will likely try to sell you anything you look at or touch and even invent a history of the item you’re considering. If you’re not interested, politely tell the merchant and move on to something else.

2. Don’t Forget to Tip
In a lot of European countries, tipping isn’t expected. That’s not the case in Armenia regardless that most tabs will add on taxes anyway it’s still the custom to leave a little something extra. Usually $1 USD is enough.

3. Don’t Use American Currency
In Armenia, they’re pretty strict about using the local currency, the dram. However, exchange markets are everywhere and the dram is a pretty inexpensive currency.

4. Don’t Miss Out on the Shopping in Yerevan
Armenia is a fairly inexpensive city, and no matter your budget, the shopping in Yerevan has something you’re going to love, so make sure to look around and find something fun before heading out into the countryside.

5. Pay Cab Drivers 1000 Dram, No Matter Where You Go!
It’s $2 for you but a big deal to them. If you’re being transported from one location to another through the traffic of Armenia, then the cab driver has earned their money. Go ahead and make it worth their time and effort.

How Lavash Bread Is Made In Armenia

Lavash, a traditional regional flatbread enjoyed around the South Caucasus and western Asia, is an essential part of Armenian, Iranian, and Turkish cuisine. We traveled to Yerevan, Armenia, to see how it's made there and learn about the importance of lavash. In Armenia, the dough is thinly rolled out and slapped against a tonir (underground clay oven) to bake for a few seconds. When fresh, it can be eaten with cheese or kebab, or on its own.

Special thanks to Tsirani Garden Restaurant and the Megerian Cultural Complex:

13 Places in Yerevan, Armenia You Should Visit!
By [ Gregori Saghyan

1. Republic Square and National Gallery and Armenia History Museum

Here in Armenia, Republic Square is considered to be one of 10 most beautiful squares of the world. Well, unfortunately, I couldn't find the source but I totally agree with the statement. Republic Square is really thrilling. It was constructed from 1924 to 1929. Its architect is a genial Armenian architect - A. Tamanyan who also designed Yerevan in general. The square is surrounded by The National Gallery and The History Museum, The Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, The Government House, The Central Post-Office of Armenia,

2. Matenadaran

One can think that Matenadaran - The Ancient Manuscripts Museum could be a boring place. However, it is just the first and false impression. I am only 22 years old and I can tell that Matenadaran was awesome. Every single book, every single page of the books covers a very interesting story. I will bring just one example. The heaviest book in Matenadaran was around 34 kg. During Armenian Genocide it was carried out from Turkey by two sisters. They cut the book into 2 pieces - 17 kg each and tied to their bodies. One of them died during their escape from Turkey and her piece was lost.

3. Opera House

Opera House is the other great building by the genial A. Tamanyan. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it is indeed a piece of art from outside and of course it is magnificent inside. It would be enough to say that it is one of few Opera Theatres in the world that were able to perform Aida of Giuseppe Verdi but one should also know that Opera House has held concerts of such artists as Charles Aznavour,

4. Tsitsernakaberd and Genocide Museum

Tsitsernakaberd is the place where Armenians gather to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Every April 24 people from Yerevan, other regions of Armenia and even a lot of Diaspora representatives walk to the eternal fire and put flowers in memory of the millions of people died during the tragedy.

5. Arin Berd or Erebuni Fortress

This is where Yerevan and modern Armenia begin. Being founded in 8th century BC and surviving to our times it is one of the oldest fortresses in the world. And it makes Yerevan one of the oldest cities of the world. Arin Berd in translation from Armenian means Fortress of Blood though it's not so scary. Indeed, this fortress is of a great historical value. So if you are interested in archeology or history, this is the place that you cannot miss!

6. Cascade and Cafesjian Museum

Cascade is my personal favorite. I go there with my friends to drink a cup of coffee and with my girlfriend to walk there. Cascade is just a masterpiece in term of architecture. From the top of cascade you can see the most beautiful panorama of Yerevan and Ararat if you are lucky enough because mostly Ararat is covered with clouds and is invisible.

7. Ararat Brandy Factory

Ararat is a symbol of Armenia but so is Ararat Brandy Factory. Any Brandy lover should know that after France the best Brandy in the world is produced in Armenia, but some even prefer Armenian Brandy to French. Ararat Brandy Factory is an old school top quality brandy maker - indeed the best one in Armenia.

8. Northern Avenue

Constructed in 2007 Northern Avenue became another beloved place for Yerevan walkers. Northern Avenue was included in Tamanyan's Yerevan city plan but he wasn't able to construct it.
It connects the 2 Yerevan Famous Squares - The Republic Square and the Freedom Square (where Opera House is located).

9. Museum of Parajyanov

Until now there are a lot of cinemaddicts that still remember the great Armenian movie director Parajyanov as he is one of the world-renowned geniuses in that sphere... Some greatest directors such as Fellini, Tarkovsky, Vigo, Antonioni, Godard and many others knew and respected Parajyanov as mastermind of his genre.

10. Museum of Saryan

Well, everybody who explores the world of art, the world of drawings should know Martiros Saryan as he is indeed a great painter. He is famous all over the world because of his ability to show the power of the colors. His paintings are very colorful and very beautiful... It is too hard to transfer that beauty by words.

In Armenia you don't even have to stick your thumb out and a car will stop. They can't always take you. Sometimes they just want to say hello, or they want to see that you're OK. We had no idea Armenian people would be so incredibly friendly.

In this episode we hitchhike the long way from the capital Yerevan to the little cave town of Khndzoresk. Even though it was easy to get picked up it was a long and rough day as the heatwave in the Caucasus had really kicked in. Imagine 40 degrees Celcius or more standing in the sun on asphalt. It actually felt more like 50+ degrees Celcius. We reached the desert, near the border with Azerbaijan where got picked up by Artur who made our journey to the cave town of Khndzoresk very special.

In Khndzoresk we camp with beautiful views of the cave town and the next day we explore this mini Cappadocia and start to replan our journey.

Things NOT To Do in Laos

When traveling to a country like Laos, failing to adhere to its cultural and unspoken social rules could potentially turn your trip into a nightmare.
So here are 5 Things NOT TO Do in Laos!

1. Don't Keep Valuables in Your Pockets
According to travel advisories, pickpocketing is huge throughout the country, especially where tourists convene. Also, make sure to remove all of your possessions out of your vehicle, and hold on tight to your purse while walking down the street.

2. Don't Wear Revealing Clothing
Many cities are homes to sacred temples, so showing respect through your clothing choices is encouraged. Arms, shoulders, and knees should be covered at all times. If you feel you're getting strange looks, cover up!

3. Don't Give Your Passport as Collateral
You rent out a bicycle or motorbike to make your way around town. But many of these small shop owners are actually scammers that ask you to leave your passport as collateral for a bike rental. They then have someone steal the bike. You're charged a hefty fee, and your passport is held until you fork over the cash.

4. Don't Show PDA
If you want to hold hands, hug, and smooch your partner, make sure it isn't done in public. In Laos this makes the locals very uncomfortable. If you just can't keep your hands off your honey, do so in private.

5. Don't Be Unhygienic
Always make sure you look as presentable as possible. Looking a disheveled, hot mess in the temples is a sign of disrespect. Cleanliness is a big deal in Laos, and bad body odor will get you dirty looks. So apply deodorant so you don't stink up the streets.
