Southern Ethiopia, Arba Minch - impressions, street scenery
Arba Minch town (formerly called Ganta Garo) means 40 Springs. The name originated from the abundant local springs which are source to a groundwater forest. It is second largest town in the Gamo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region about 500 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. Arba Minch is located near two big lakes Abaya and Chamo at an elevation of 1285 meters above sea level. Arba Minch consists of the uptown administrative centre of Shecha and 4 kilometers away the downtown commercial and residential areas of Sikela. Kulfo River flows through the town and drains into Lake Chamo.

I stayed two nights at Paradise Lodge which is a luxury lodge in Arba Minch, Ethiopia. The lodge is nice but the food is terrible!
South Ethiopia, Dorze Village near Arba Minch - tourist attraction
The Dorze are a people living in the Gamo Highlands of Southern Ethiopia, they are famous for the shape of their huts, that recall the structure of a beehive and the face of an elephant.
The typical compound of a Dorze family consists of 3 huts, a main hut in the center and two smaller huts on the sides, the Dorze huts are built using only natural materials such as wood, bamboo and enset leaves; around the huts there is a garden where coffee and cotton are grown, there are also numerous false banana plants, the enset.
The main hut has considerable dimensions, on average the height of these huts ranges from 9 to 12 meters, the supporting structure is made of bamboo wood on which are placed the panels of woven bamboo and enset leaves, also finely woven , these make the hut water resistant.
The shape of the Dorze hut resembles the face of an elephant, these animals lived in these lands centuries ago, before moving to Kenya; the hut has two holes in the upper part for ventilation that look like two eyes, and an entrance that protrudes from the rest of the structure that looks like the nose of the pachyderm.
These huts can be attacked by termites or ants that feed on these materials, damaging the lower part of the hut; when it happens the house goes down gradually.
To respond to the attack of ants and termites the Dorze act in two ways: they modify the entrance of the house that, progressively goes down along with the house, or they move the hut to another place safe from termites and ants; these huts are real mobile homes.
The structure of the hut is liftable and transportable but it is not a simple operation, twenty men are needed inside the hut and another 40 outside who, with the help of wooden poles, that are placed under the house, raise the whole structure and move it to another place.

From Arba Minch Airport our exciting trip to the tribes of the Omo Valley began in December 2021.
All of our hotels along the way were very cheap and basic. None of the hotels had shampoo in the bathroom, only soap. On average, rooms cost $20 per night.

How to visit the Crocodile Farm in Arba Minch in Ethiopia, female solo traveller

I visited the Crocodile Farm in Arba Minch in Ethiopia by arranging the car through the hotel I was staying. You can take a Tuk Tuk too but the driver has to wait for you till you return after visiting the farm since there is no taxi or tuk tuk available in that area to take you back so you have to think about arranging a transportation for your way back. The tour lasted about two hours.

How to visit Dorze Village, Arba Minch in Ethiopia as a female solo traveller

This is how I visited the Dorze Village in Arba Minch in Ethiopia. I arranged the tour with the hotel and it costs $150 if there are more people to go ,the $150 gets split and it will cost you much less. The road to get to the village was unpaved and it took almost two hours to get there. We also stopped at Dorze local weekly market on the way. This was a great experience since the tribe is very welcoming and they have a rich interesting culture.

sparkling waters of Arbaminch
Arbaminch is a beautiful tropical place. Arbaminch means 40springs. it got it's name from the spring waters found in the north part of nechsar national park.
people found the springs and decided to count them and got tied on the 40th and decided to say call it Arbaminch ( 40 spring )
and the people of Arbaminch get there water supplies from here as well.
since it's located in nechsar national park, it's very beautiful for tracking and you get to also see a lots of wild life.
