Antigua Guatemala Travel Guide - Step Into Europe in Central America | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Antigua Guatemala, a colorful and elegant little town in Central America.

It is a small city that used to be a part of the Spanish colony. Famous for its well-preserved Baroque-influenced architecture, as well as colonial churches ruins, it used to be the capital city. After a hazardous earthquake in 1773, the Spanish crown decided to move it to a new place which is today known as Guatemala city. Some people refused to leave and what was left was renamed into “Antigua Guatemala” meaning Old Guatemala.

Today, it only has around 30 000 inhabitants, but it is a calm and cultural place with the buildings of vivid colors, clean cobblestone streets and breath-taking architecture, very popular for tourists. It is a really cute place which is also under UNESCO’s protection.

Walking around the city, there are views of the imposing Volcán de Agua to the south and the twin peaks of Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango to the west. There are many lined with farm-to-table restaurants, contemporary art galleries, and design studios. The whole town seems so sophisticated, but in such an unusual way, since it is a combination of vivid colors, Spanish culture, rich history, and Guatemalan spirit and surrounding nature.

With its booming coffee scene and boutique hotels, Antigua is quickly garnering appeal as one of the most alluring cities in Central America and we can now see why.

Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!

Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Lake Atitlan is one of the most popular places to visit in Guatemala, and for good reason. Imagine a huge lake surrounded by volcanoes and dotted with traditional villages and small towns, each with their own personality.

Being that Lake Atitlan is easily accessible from the travel hub of Antigua, many travelers add a stay at the lake to their Guatemala trip.

You'll mingle with locals, backpackers, yogis and church groups on mission trips. You can choose to spend your time relaxing, hiking, volunteering, getting off the grid, hanging out with other foreigners, drinking a beer on the lake, cleansing your body and soul, or all of the above!

There are lots of things to do in Lake Atitlan, plus it’s perfect environment to get away from it all and simply relax. It's no surprise that people often end up staying around Lake Atitlan for much longer than expected.

Enjoy the video and make sure to let us know where you're watching from!

Our kids loved this charming town - Antigua Guatemala #familytravel

After staying in our favorite hotel in Guatemala - Hobbitenango we drove down the volcano slope to a magical little town of Antigua Guatemala.
It is a popular tourist attraction that hasn't been really discovered yet.
We loved the ruins, the architecture, the authentic feel to the town but the people are the ones that truly stole our hearts.
Every moment in Antigua made us fall more in love with Guatemala.
We met a group of students from IMEPCEP school in Villa Nueva, Guatemala.
Antigua Guatemala has only one McDonald's in town and it's the most beautiful McDonald's we've ever seen! Check it out!

Antigua Guatemala | Central America Travel Vlog | Things to do, weather, food, and more

See why Antigua is one of the must-see places in Central America in our travel vlog. A UNESCO world heritage site, for more than 200 years Antigua served as the seat of the military governor of the Spanish colony of Guatemala- a large region that included almost all of present-day Central America. First, we talk about the glorious weather in Antigua and some of the positioning of the city at an elevation of 5029ft. Then we walk to the very heart of Antigua: Parque Central (Central Park) with the fountain of the sirens at its center. Then we take a short walk to the Santa Catalina Arch, arguably the most famous landmark in all of Antigua if not all of Guatemala. The Santa Catalina Arch is not just a pretty tourist attraction, it was originally built with a very specific purpose. After lunch at the delicious Rincón Típico, we have a sweet treat at the Choco Museo (chocolate museum) while learning a little bit about how chocolate is made. Then it's off to another of Antigua's famous tourist destinations: the Convent of the Capuchinas (Convento Capuchinas). Like much of the historic city, the Convent of the Capuchinas was damaged during an earthquake many years ago, but it is still the perfect place to escape to when you want some peace and quiet. Lastly, we finish our day with some delicious Guatemalan coffee and catch a procession preparing for the famous Semana Santa. Unfortunately, Semana Santa (holy week) was canceled this year so we feel lucky to have seen this.

We filmed this episode of Antigua Guatemala in March 2020.

Central America and Mexico’s 7 Unmissable Experiences

Central America and Mexico are known for their diverse landscapes of mountains, deserts and beautiful beaches. Find out about seven unmissable experiences you should try in the region .

Adrenaline seekers make the 40-minute trek up Cerro Negro’s shadeless slopes to the smoking crater where they don coveralls and goggles, mount a wooden board and whizz down a steep incline of black ash to the bottom at speeds of 40-60mph (60-100 kph. One of the best places to practice volcano surfing in the world, Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro is a bucket-list must. For more adventures, visit:

Head to the Mexican town of San Juan de la Vega for the Exploding Hammer Festival, which takes place every February. It involves strapping home-made explosives to sledgehammers and smashing them into the ground. It can be quite dangerous, so don’t get too close! If Mexico takes your fancy, head to:

Rio Celeste is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Costa Rican province of Alajuela. In the past, visitors were allowed to swim in the river, but it is now prohibited within the park for safety reasons. While you may not be able to take a dip here, seeing this spectacular and surreal blue river is an absolute must when visiting this part of the country. Find out more about the river here:

Before becoming the it destination of the travel bloggerati, Las Coloradas was just a sleepy fishing village on the Yucatán coast with a penchant for salt production that dated back to the Mayan period. The pink colour comes from the algae, plankton and brine shrimp that reside in the waters of Las Coloradas and become visible as the water evaporates under the beating Mexican sun. For more on Las Coloradas, visit:

The Sloth Sanctuary is located between Limon and Cahuita on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The 320-acre (130-hectare) private nature reserve was previously called Aviarios del Caribe. You can get to the sanctuary via rental car, by taking a Sansa Airlines flight to Limon followed by a taxi ride, hopping on an Interbus via route Limon/Cahuita/Hone Creek/Puerto Viejo (let the driver know you are going to the sanctuary and you can get dropped off right at the gate), or by hiring a private shuttle van. If the Sloth Sanctuary piques your interest, check out:

Stay on a private island in this Airbnb in Belize. Search for Little Peter Oasis and have your own personal bungalow, floating on the Caribbean Sea. You can snorkel in the nearby reef or go parasailing, and there’s even a helipad that doubles as a putting green. Discover more islands in Central America at:

Close to Cancún there is an entire underwater museum to be discovered that many people have never heard of, and it has a mission beyond just the enjoyment of divers. Launched in 2009, this impressive feat of both imagination and engineering includes more than 500 life-size sculptures that are accessible from three separate points in Quintana Roo: Isla Mujeres, Cancún and Punta Nizuc. For further information, dive into:

Visit ANTIGUA | What you NEED to see | Guatemala TRAVEL VLOG

Antigua, a UNESCO town in Guatemala. Bright houses and cobbled streets, surrounded by volcanoes and charm. In this video we show you what you NEED to see here in a short time. We pack in 24 hours of exploration into the city and cover all the main sites, and some that you wouldn't always see in a guide book.

We took tips from local people to see everything in a short time, from the hilltop view of the city, to the markets (the touristy ones and the local ones). We saw some chocolate making, the famous yellow archway and other stunning colonial style architecture.

There is also great food in Antigua, Guatemala. We checked out the typical local food and places to go and get healthy snacks (I could eat banana bread all day). These are the things you NEED to see, and in this travel vlog we hope it shows you some inspiration if you are planning on coming here, as there doesn't always seen like much to do on the surface, unless you are staying for Spanish Schools.

Join as we learn how to navigate this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the lows. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.

AWESOME Day Trips From Antigua Guatemala

Wondering what to do in Antigua, Guatemala? In this video, I share some fun day trips from Antigua, Guatemala. All of the Antigua day trips were organized by who I highly recommend if you are looking for an ethical tourism experience.

They took me to the Antigua chocolate factory, to a place to buy local wine, the jade factory, and the chicken bus factory in Antigua. This tour takes you to San Juan del Obispo, San Pedro las Huertas, Ciudad Vieja, and San Miguel Dueñas. Other day trips we did were to Mayan ruins close to Antigua, Iximche, and to see the Maximon temple (San Simón).

You can read more about Guatemala on my blog.

Rio Dulce Guatemala | Jewel of the Guatemalan Caribbean | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to the wonderful Rio Dulce, an extraordinary river in Guatemala!

Did you know that the movie “The New Adventures of Tarzan” was entirely filmed here in 1935? The beautiful rainforest you see in the movie is hidden in Guatemala and still well-preserved. To get a good shot of the forest they had to use some locations using the railroad service in Guatemala.

It is a spectacular place rich with flora and fauna, great views, folklore, beaches, and traditional locals. Being so breath-taking, many people call it the jewel of the Guatemalan Caribbean. A great place where you can spend the most peaceful time with the family.

Being a part of a lake and river system known as the department of Izabal, it is a great sailboat cruising destination. Rio Dulce flows out of the Lake Izabal and is soon spanned by one of the biggest bridges in Central America.

On one side of the bridge is the town El Relleno and a nearby orphanage Casa Guatemala that provides children with education and nourishment. On the other side is the town of Fronteras. It is considered to be the center of Rio Dulce, sometimes called by the same name, and many people arrive by canoes to visit the town because it contains a local vegetable market.

Enjoy the video and be sure to let us know where you’re watching from!

Tikal Guatemala - Ancient Mayan City & Star Wars Rebel Base | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Tikal, the impressive ancient town of one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms!

Guatemala is known for being a region sprinkled with ancient town ruins, and Tikal is maybe one of the most fascinating ones. Today Tikal may be to Guatemala what the Great pyramids are to Egypt. Surrounded by rainforest, it is placed 300 kilometers north of Guatemala city.

It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. In 1979 it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The researchers estimate that it was populated by around 10,000 to as high as 90,000 inhabitants.

There were many speculations about the origin and meaning of its name, but its precise meaning still remains obscure. It didn’t get the name Tikal until its discovery in the 1840s. Before that, it was called Yax Mutal. Researches translated it as “the waterhole” because Tikal used to be a reservoir for hunters and travelers in the region. Alternative suggestions for the meaning of its name are the place of the voices in the Itza Maya language and First Mutal because Mutul was the name of the kingdom itself.

Even though the name itself remains a mystery, Tikal is still one of the best understood Maya cities, because the tombs of many rulers were discovered and the investigation of their monuments, temples, and palaces helped explain its history.

ANTIGUA GUATEMALA: A tour around the city

Antigua Guatemala was a last-minute addition to our time in Guatemala. We are SO glad to have made the detour - especially during the week before holy week. The city was full of processions, sawdust carpets, and celebrations.

We had a charming Airbnb in the heart of all the action. Just down the street from El Cerro de la Cruz, three blocks from Parque Central and we were surrounded by many stunning ruins and historical buildings, including the Antigua Guatemala Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Joseph d' Antigua Guatemala).

In this video, we're walking about the city of Antigua.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?

Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.

We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).
