We've now left Mexico for Guatemala! We took our time travelling from Tulum to Cancun for 1 night then continued to the beautiful historic city of Antigua for another night before finally making it to our destination of San Pedro La Laguna on the shore of Lake Atitlan.
The journey saw us take 1 coach, 1 plane, 2 arranged transfers, a ferry and a tuk tuk before finally reaching our AirBnb! See how we got on and some of the beautiful sights we saw along the way!

TRAVELLING TO LAKE ATITLAN (How to get to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala via chicken bus)
Travelling to Lake Atitlan on public transport (aka a chicken bus) was chaotic, but surprisingly easy and VERY cheap!
We ended up taking three different chicken buses AND a ferry because that was the safest and quickest way to get to Lake Atitlan. It also turned out to be a fun experience. The locals helped every time we got lost, which was a lot. Not to mention a stunning bus journey along windy, mountain roads and a scenic ferry ride across one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. All this for only 64 GTQ pp! So, here’s how to get to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala via chicken bus, a cheap and perfectly safe way to travel!

I traveled solo to Guatemala for 56 days
I traveled solo to Guatemala for two months and here is what I have to share.
The perfect backpacking itinerary:
Arrive in Ciudad de Guatemala and either stay there for a night or catch a shuttle directly to Antigua (they are directly outside the airport, costs $15)
Stay in Antigua for a couple of nights
Hike Acatenango
Go to Xela
From Xela, you can visit Chichicastenango, the biggest market in Guatemala
To do the trek from Xela to Lake Atitlan:
At Lake Atitlan, I recommend visiting at least one or two towns around
If you like to go to the playa Monterrico and El Paredón are nice.
From Lake Atitlan, you can go to Semuc Champey (ask your hostel receptionist what is the best way, or if they have a shuttle)
From Semuc Chaampey to Flore - be ready for a long ride.
Stay in Flores for one night
Camp out in Tikal
From Tikal, you can go to Belize or return to Ciudad de Guatemala and fly out to wherever you are going.

Magical Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide 4K
In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.
There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

Lake Atitlán: The Viral Hotel Casa del Mundo and Visiting the Lake's Towns | Guatemala Travel Vlog
Lake Atitlán is a must-visit destination in Guatemala! Over this glistening lake towers three active volcanoes - San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán - a breathtaking backdrop to this paradise.
Aldous Huxley wrote, “Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing.” We couldn't agree more!

La Casa del Mundo is undoubtedly the best place to stay around Lago Atitlán. It was truly one of the most magical hotels we have ever stayed at. The definition of peace and tranquility. La Casa del Mundo was built in 1988 using local materials and with sustainability in mind. Built into the cliffs surrounding Atitlán, this place was truly unique.

The lakefront luxury of diving straight into the water is not something that many other hotels have around Lake Atitlán. It was amazing to swim and paddle board straight from the hotel's terraces. There are also so many places to relax and enjoy a hot cacao / cold beer on the various terraces.
This secluded hotel is accessible by public speedboat (“lanchas”) from Panjachel (Q25) or from the other town around the lake. It is also a short walk from Jabalito, a very small local village. It is possible to walk along the trail from Santa Cruz to Jabalito. We did this, but it is important to note both that the hike is unmarked and that we were warned by locals that it can become dangerous along the trail later in the day.
The must-visit towns on the shores Lake Atitlán:
1. San Juan La Laguna - This colourful pueblo is the most culturally rich in indigenous Mayan culture that we visited around Lake Atitlán. The town is well known for its intricately woven textile crafts - we loved exploring all the markets along the colourful streets. We also did a cacao tour and tasting, which we highly recommend if you want to understand the traditional production process. San Juan is a short tuk tuk or ferry ride from the buzzing backpacker village of San Pedro La Laguna, which incidentally we really weren’t keen on, so it was great to be able to escape the booming music and slightly dingy vibes.
2. San Marcos La Laguna - San Marcos La Laguna is a haven for travellers seeking spirituality, wellness and yoga. It slightly lacks authenticity because of this, but we loved its vegan restaurants and delicious coffee. San Marcos la Laguna is home to the Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve, also known as the Reserva Natural Atitlán. It is a protected area and ecological reserve that encompasses a portion of the lake's shoreline and surrounding hills. For a small entrance fee, you can visit this reserve and swim in the lake.
3. Jaibalito - Jaibalito is a small and peaceful community that was the least touristy village that we visited. It is a short walk along the shore from Casa del Mundo, where we were staying. We also hiked there from Santa Cruz La Laguna, which is an (unmarked!) trail through the lush hills of the lake. It is worth visiting if you are staying at Casa del Mundo and grabbing a bite to eat at the lakeside restaurant.

Today, we show you where to travel in 2022 in our Lake Atitlan Guatemala travel vlog and give some what to do after retirement ideas. We take a boat ride to explore a few of the 12 cities located around the shores of Lake Atitlan, which is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We pick up some food in San Marcos and then explore art, textiles, chocolate and coffer in San Juan La Laguna. We then return to our Airbnb location in Santa Cruz La Laguna to take a Guatemalan cooking class.
This is our retirement and we hope you will join us for a 10-year journey and world travel vlog. Perhaps our travel will give some ideas on what to do in retirement and where to travel in 2022. As older travel vloggers, we have different perspectives as we show you where to visit in 2022 and give you our experiences as we travel the world.

In 2019, we achieved our goal of visiting every state in the union in our Airstream. We also visited every national park in the lower 48. We are big believers in lists, so of course we plan to see the remaining 12 parks in the next few years.
In 2021, we made the big decision to extreme downsize to just a suitcase and a small backpack, each. We started our journey around the world beginning in Central America. We hope that over the next ten years, we will have seen many beautiful things, made many memories and new friends, and shared the experience with our children and grandchildren.
