Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia, Spain

Vlog # 25 (Pls watch in HD or 720p) - This is the continuation of our Barcelona trip. Visiting the Montserrat Monastery was one of the reasons why we traveled to Spain. It's been a dream of mine to visit at least one monastery in my lifetime, and I must say, having fulfilled that is something I am very grateful for.

The Montserrat Monastery is also known as the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, located near the top of the Montserrat Mountain in Monistrol de Montserrat in Catalonia, Spain. it is part of the Order of St. Benedict and also home to the Virgin of Montserrat and the Basilica of Montserrat.

It was built around the 11th century and monks still reside in the Monastery and hold services. It can be reached via public transportation and private vehicles. We took the train from the Placa Espana station from Barcelona and alighted at the Monistrol station where we took the Cremallera going up to the mountain. There is an option to take the cable car which was the view of the other side of the mountain but it was a shorter ride. We wanted to sit longer on the train and view the surrounding area as the train traverse the side of the mountain before reaching the stop at the Monastery. Another funicular can be taken to further reach the upper part of the mountain where you can see the cave and check out the views at the top.

Montserrat Mountain Top Monastery, Catalonia, Spain.

Today, we traveled to the Montserrat Mountain Top Monastery located in Catalonia, Spain. I had never heard of the site, but I soon learned that it is extremely significant to Catalans, and Catholic pilgrims that come from far and wide to see the Black Madonna- said to have healing powers. The site is 4055 feet above the valley roads. The first part of the monastery was built as far back as 880 A.D. by Hermit Monks with Roman backing.

Montserrat is one hour from Barcelona but bit of a hidden gem. Although plenty of tourists visit the monastery, the walking routes are very quiet. This place has a fascinating history with Napoleon and Himmler paying it a visit. Himmler specifically came looking for the holy grail which he believed would give him supernatural powers. It is easy to get here from Barcelona and a perfect day trip. We sleep in our car again and find out that many truck stops have showers to use for a small fee, a great budget travel hack.

The legend traces the foundation of the abbey in the year 880
On a Saturday afternoon at nightfall, shepherds saw a powerful light come down from the sky accompanied by a beautiful melody.
The following Saturday, the vision was repeated. The four Saturdays following the rector of Olesa accompanied them and could see the miraculous vision. According to the legend told in the Virolai de Montserrat, a song of praise to the Virgin of Montserrat, angels cut the Montserrat massif with a gold saw2 (hence the popular etymology of Montserrat, Mont-sawed because the silhouette toothed massif evokes the serrated blade of a saw) to house the statue of the Virgin and the abbey.
This legend is at the origin of the heraldic symbol of Montserrat: a saw, sometimes held by angels and sometimes alone, but always above a drawing of stylized rocks3.

After learning of the event, the bishop who was in Manresa organized a climb to the Montserrat during which a cave was discovered where there was an image of the Blessed Virgin. The bishop proposed to transfer her to Manresa, but as soon as they tried to move her, she became so heavy that he could not move her. The man of the Church interpreted this as the will of the Blessed Virgin to stay in this place and decided to build a chapel on the site.

Since this legend whose oldest story is a text dated 12394, Montserrat is considered a hotbed of both Spanish and Catalan Catholicism (it is the patron saint of Catalonia), since it is celebrated on April 27th. Outside the monastery and the Holy Grotto, the massif has a number of small churches and abandoned hermitages.

The Blessed Virgin, familiarly called Moreneta (black) for its dark color, was carved out of wood at the end of the 12th century; it is a black Madonna as there are in some places of Europe.

Spain Travel Guide: Barcelona, Madrid, Montserrat! [4K]

In this video, we present a Spain Travel Guide that covers some major cities, such as Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, etc, but also just some things to do, like Montserrat.

By the way, I've seen some excellent Spain travel packages on Groupon, so make sure to take a look at it if you're not sure what's the cheapest time to travel to Spain and want to save some funds.

----------------
Here's the basic info and the do's and don's when visiting Spain!

- Transportation costs are moderate: $250/wk for rental car and ~$50/80 to cross the country via train (single trip)

- Frequent tolls of $1-5 on the highways, so budget this extra expense ($60 for our week long driving adventure)

- English friendly in major cities, less so as you get into more rural areas

- Overall cost is comparable to US, but fuel is expensive (use diesel)

- Similar to all of Europe, dining experiences take time - must look for Tapas/Pinchos bars if want quick service (grab and pay)

- worked well for accommodations, from 150-300 night for 3 people

- Cuisine (esp outside of major cities) is mainly bread/pasta, meats and cheese - don't expect too many vegetables or fruit - but be sure to try Paella and Tapas/Pinchos

- Parking within city usually $20-30 for 24 hrs depending on if major city or not

- Barcelona specific: reserve tours of Sagrada Familia & Guell park ahead of time

- Schedule: everything closed 1-3, sometimes hard to find lunch, dinner starts at 7 at the earliest, but most are eating around 8 or 9, with drinks beforehand

- Download Gmaps ahead of time: they work great in Spain, no need for Wifi/Internet connection to navigate

- Most cafes will give you wifi password if you eat/drink something

- Pre-departure: get tickets for the Sagrada Familia Basilica, Guell Park, Winery Tours (recommend Contino in Logrono)

- Unique Gear List: travel adapter, Car phone adapter

Barcelona amaizing Montserrat Abbey

The most amazing Abbey constructed on the top the mountain - Montserrat Monastery.

The Montserrat Monastery is about 50 km from Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. The whole surrounding area and also the monastery are beautiful, imposing and somewhat mysterious.

*Montserrat Monastery History*
This Benedictine monastery was built at the base of Monte Serreado, in the middle ages, around the cave where the image of Nuestra Señora de Monte Serreado (La Moreneta), patron saint of Catalonia, had been found (in 880). It was destroyed by French troops in 1811, during the Peninsular War, and rebuilt in 1844.

Already in the middle of the 20th century, Montserrat Monastery became a stronghold of Catalan culture when it was highly suppressed by the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, who did everything to end the nationalism of this Spanish province with great ambitions of independence.

*Montserrat, Barcelona - Things to Do*
The hills and valleys can be the paradise for those who enjoy hiking. There are routes for all tastes and degrees of difficulty for anyone who wants to explore the strangest rock formation in Catalonia.

At the weekend, there are small tents where regional products are sold. Visit also the interior of the Montserrat Monastery and admire the architecture and calm that the place conveys.
There are store in Montserrat to buy souvenirs. If you want to eat, there are two restaurants available and a self service where there are also light meals and where we had coffee and breakfast.

*Barcelona - Montserrat - How to get there by Train*
From Barcelona to Montserrat is very easy by train. At the Plaza de España station (arriving by metro on the green and red lines) there is a train every hour every day of the week, starting at 8:36 p.m. Use the R5 Barcelona-Montserrat-Manresa line.

You have two chances of leaving the train:

Montserrat-Aeri station, if you want to take the cable car up there - 5-minute ride, cabins every 15 (single ticket € 6, roundtrip € 9);

Monistrol station of Montserrat, if you prefer to follow the tram (zip line) - 15 minutes, every 20 minutes (low and medium season single ticket € 5, return ticket € 7.90, high season single ticket € 5.70, round trip € 9 ).

Any of these trips have spectacular views of the valleys and hills. You can also reach the stations by car, which have free parking.

*Montserrat, Barcelona - General Information*
Entrance to Montserrat Monastery: free
Entrance to Monastery museum: € 5.50 (Monday to Friday, 10.00h- 18.45h, Saturdays and Sundays, 9.30h-19.45h)
The Tourist Office is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (7:00 p.m. July-September).

The origins of Montserrat Monastery can be traced back to around 880, with monks establishing hermitages across the mountain for their spiritual practices.
