Amazing Indonesian Scuba Diving from North Sulawesi and Raja Ampat, West Papua

This is Raja Ampat (4k) - dive into the dream of biodiversity

Breathtaking dives in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Kri Island, Indonesian coral reefs. As part of Coral Triangle Raja Ampat in West Papua has the highest biodiversity and the most colorful reefs on the planet, around 75% of the world’s coral species live here.

The size, maturity and healthiness of corals in this region is insane! A large part of the marine life in Raja Ampat is protected by 7 Marine Protected Areas (MPA's).

Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1500 small islands, including the four main islands of: Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo.

We started our trip in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), 2 flight transfers, 2 boat transfers and +30 hours later we arrived at Kri Island at Kri Eco Resort + Papua Diving for 10 days. Together with my daughter, Isabelle, we made 22 dives at the most beautiful dive sites there are.

All the dive sites are 5-25 minutes from Kri Island: Kri Eco Jetty, Chicken Bay, Mikes Point (!!), Blue Magic, Sardines, Sapokren Jetty, Melissa’s Garden (!!), Chicken Reef, Sorido Wall, Friwenbonda, Citrus Reef, Cape Kri and a lot more!

We stayed on Kri Island, at Kri Eco Resort. Kri Eco Resort is located in the center of the Raja Ampat Marine park at Kri Island. Papua Diving provides guided dives for Kri Eco Resort and (sister resort) Sorido Bay Resort. The local Papuan dive guides of Papua Diving are the best experienced dive guides in Raja Ampat.

Raja Ampat has more than 1000 species of fish, 540 species of coral and 700 species of mollusk. Predatory fish such as Barracudas, Blacktip Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks are fully present. Large Oceanic Manta rays are attracted to the rich plankton waters. Schools of fish are everywhere and sometimes a bait ball can be seen. Beside the beauty marinelife the Kri’s forests are rich in birdlife and reptiles.

A special part of the marine park are the Mangroves at Hidden Bay (6:06), they offer critical nursing environments for juveniles of fish species. World's largest amount of mangrove coverage can be found in Indonesia. The Mangroves where one of the highlight’s of this trip!

During our stay we made excursions to Fam Islands, Hidden Bay and The Passage, they are the very definition of paradise.

- (7:00) Fam Islands are a group of islands in the Raja Ampat Archipelago. White limestone cliffs plunge into the sea. Ultramarine blue lagoons are nestled next to monumental pinnacles and untouched beaches.

- (6:06) Hidden Bay has a mangrove system of clear mirror-still blue water, where soft corals grow on the roots of mangrove trees. Rising above the foliage hornbills and parrots swoop between the trees. Hidden Bay is a complex network of interconnected water channels and lakes.

- (7:23) The Passage lies between the island of Gam and Waigeo. It can be described as river flowing between the two islands. The nutrient rich waters that are drawn through by the tides feed a vast wealth of marine biodiversity. Above water the sheer limestone cliffs make this a place excessively beautiful.

Places like this are sensitive to climate change. It's frightening to see how many people close their eyes for climate change. Climate change and a decrease of biodiversity are caused by overpopulation. Overpopulation is the main cause of most urgent problems in the world.

Misool Magic - Raja Ampat Liveaboard, Scuba Diving Indonesia

This is Raja Ampat, and within this huge archipelago (that’s the same size as Switzerland!) is an area called Misool. And it is absolutely magic!

Raja Ampat is a collection of islands in the west Papua province of Indonesia. It is very remote and the South Island of raja Ampat is Misool and is even more remote. This scuba diving trip here is onboard the Benetta which is a traditional wooden Phinisi boat. All hand crafted out of wood by master Indonesian craftsman.

The scuba diving here in Raja Ampat is absolutely epic.

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such incredible diving. Period.

The magic of Misool is that it is a protected zone that’s patrolled by rangers. All thanks to Misool Eco resort and foundation which made arrangements with the local village to protect the area.

This means it is literally fish soup!

Raja Ampat Diving | Indonesia | 2019

Located off the western tip of New Guinea, in Indonesia, the Raja Ampat islands are covered in tropical green jungles and surrounded by brilliant blue waters.

Although remote, sparsely populated, and still relatively undiscovered by tourists, Raja Ampat Islands are considered to be ones of Indonesia’s most idyllic diving destinations.

We’ve been dreaming about visiting Raja Ampat since our first visit to Indonesia back in 2015 and were so lucky to have finally had a chance to dive in this remote part of the world earlier this year!

Raja Ampat | One Month In Paradise | West Papua | Methos Homestay

Raja Ampat is considered to be the global center of tropical marine bio-diversity. The region contains more than 600 species of hard corals, equaling about 75 percent of known species globally, and more than 1,700 species of reef fish. Endangered and rare marine mammals such as Dugongs, whales (such as bryde's whale and the less known omura's whale), dolphins and orcas occur here.

The rainforest that covers the islands is home to many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. Two species of bird-of-paradise, the red bird-of-paradise and Wilson's bird-of-paradise, are endemic to the islands of Waigeo, Gam, and Batanta.

We stayed with Methos Homestay on Gam island.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of exploring various dive resorts in Raja Ampat since we first discovered the area. However, Sorido Bay Resort has easily become our favourite, and we have already visited twice. The resort's unparalleled combination of exceptional diving, the world's greatest marine biodiversity, and the wonderful facilities make it our favourite destination on Earth. For avid divers, it is undoubtedly a paradise that we hope to visit countless more times in the future.

We owe immense gratitude to the numerous individuals and organizations who have contributed to the making of this video. Their names are duly credited at the end of the video.

Diving Raja Ampat - Plus Fish ID

I spent 9 days onboard the MV Putri Papua in Raja Ampat, Indonesia in November 2016. The plan was to spend those days diving in the South. Because of a medical emergency onboard (not dive related) we ended up spending most of the time in the North instead. The shear diversity of marine life was outstanding, but for me the hi-lights over the 33 dives were the beautiful white Manta's and Wobbegong Sharks. Oh and I got to see my first 'walking shark'. An absolutely stunning part of the World to dive and I can't wait to go back.

The best liveaboard experience in Raja Ampat - A Paradise in Indonesia

In February 2019 we embarked on an amazing 5 day adventure aboard the Nataraja in Raja Ampat, which is situated at the northwestern tip of Papua in Indonesia.

The region is a well preserved paradise with the most diverse marine life in the world, so an absolute dream for scuba divers and snorkelers.

North Indonesia Snorkeling Safari | Bunaken - Halmahera - Raja Ampat

This tour will begin in North Sulawesi’s Bunaken National Park, one of Indonesia’s oldest marine reserves. From the comfort of a lovely island resort, we’ll be able to explore all the area’s best reefs with ease. Bunaken is famous for a lot of things, but it’s most known for is its massive turtle population. As we explore the shallow coral plateaus that extend from the different islands we are sure to see multiple turtles as they come to the surface for a quick breath or just cruise over the reefs.

Halmahera is the large odd-shaped island just west of the Raja Ampat area. The area we’ll be exploring is in the south, around a small island called Kusu Island. This area is fantastic for snorkeling, offering us unlimited access to a truly amazing house reef and several other nearby reefs which are only 5-20 minutes by boat. Halmahera is relatively new on the snorkeling scene as the area previously didn’t have the infrastructure to support tourism. Now, with several small airports and this brand-new resort, we can indulge in the endless reefs, clouds of colorful reef fish, the lush tropical environment, from a comfortable resort serving delicious food.

The area of Raja Ampat that we’ll be exploring is its northern region around the Dampier Strait. This area has so much to offer snorkelers – with spectacular soft corals swaying in the water, hard coral plateaus that breach the surface at low tide, and sea fan forests that have to be seen to be believed. Where marine life is concerned, we can expect several species of reef sharks as well as wobbegong (carpet) sharks, and Epaulette (walking) sharks. We hope to see oceanic and reef manta rays as they come to be cleaned and feed on the plankton at the surface. Turtles (green and hawksbill) abound too, along with schooling fish like jacks, barracuda, and of course all the brightly colored reef fish like butterflyfish, angelfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, sweetlips, surgeonfish, and more.

Raja Ampat A Paradise Underwater HD

Highlights of my March 2019 trip to Raja Ampat Indonesia. Truly an amazing place to dive. Thanks to Stephen Cunningham and the crew of the MSY Seahorse with Wallacea Dive Cruises for making the trip so special. The song is an original I wrote 10 days after my mother died.

Scuba diving with Aliens in the Ocean - The Cuttlefish of North Sulawesi in Indonesia
