Afternoon walk at Alva Beach I Sugarcane Burn-Off Display I Tropical North I Australia #exploreTNQ

A relaxing afternoon walk at Alva Beach and a Sugarcane burn-off display on our way home in the Burdekin Shire part of the Tropical North Queensland region in Northern Australia.

Alva Beach is approximately a 1-hour drive from Townsville and 15mn from the town of Ayr, the centre for the Sugar Cane Industry in the prosperous Burdekin Shire. At low tide, Alva Beach makes for excellent exploring, with lots of small crabs, shells and birdlife. Outer sand bars create inshore
lagoon areas popular with kite surfers on weekends.

Sugarcane burning is carried out by farmers before they harvest the cane. It helps make it easier to process the cane by removing the stalks and leaves. The practice is now regarded as a sensitive environmental issue by some. At this time of year, it's not unusual to see cane burns lighting up the night sky. The sugarcane burning season generally runs from July to November in Northern Australia. It is becoming a rarer spectacle nowadays.
