Genghis Khan: grilled mutton (sheep meat)
Hairy Crab: also known as horsehair crab, this large crab is found along the coast of Hokkaido.
Sea urchin onigiri: unigiri is a play on the words “uni” (sea urchin), and “onigiri” (rice ball).
Crab croquette: crab and cream are mixed together, covered in breadcrumbs (panko), and fried to a crispy golden brown.
Miso Ramen: ramen made with a miso-based broth.

If you love meat, you don’t want to miss eating Genghis Khan BBQ when you are in Hokkaido, Japan. It was my first time in Sapporo, and my first time to eat Genghis Khan BBQ (known in Japanese as Jingisukan), and I was blown away by the quality of the lamb, the taste, and the amazing Japanese food atmosphere. I loved it.
There are two reasons why this type of Japanese BBQ is called Genghis Khan. One is that lamb or sheep is not commonly eaten in Japan and it’s typically considered a meat from Mongolia. Two is the type of grill which the meat is grilled on which resembles a Mongolian - Genghis Khan - helmet.
Sapporo Genghis Khan - There are a number of famous restaurant in Sapporo that serves Genghis Khan BBQ, but I chose Sapporo Genghis Khan, a small upstair izakaya bar and restaurant with only chefs counter seating. I loved it from the moment I sat down.
You sit down and immediately get served a plate of freshly sliced raw lamb. You then grill it yourself on the helmet grill. I could hardly believe how tender and juicy and fresh the meat was. It was unbelievable.
I proceeded to have two more plate of lamb and the ribs.
Eating Genghis Khan BBQ in Sapporo, Japan, was one of my favorite food experiences in Hokkaido.

Sapporo Beer Garden Genghis Khan BBQ! - All you can eat & All you can drink! Review
The most famous Genghis Khan BBQ in Japan is at the Sapporo Beer Garden in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The reason the name Genghis Khan (who was the famous Emperor and conquerer of the Mongol Empire) is used as the name of this type of BBQ in Hokkaido is that Mongol warriors primarily ate mutton or lamb as their main meat dish due to the majority of Mongol warriors being Muslim. Thus, lamb is the main meat served at Sapporo Beer Garden (although they also serve other meats). There is also the story I heard about how the Mongol warriors used to cook their mutton and lamb meat on their iron helmets and shields out on the battlefields so that the oil and grease of the meat would drip down and off of the meat. Interestingly, the grill of the Sapporo Beer Garden seems to resemble a helmet, but this may be just from an overly active imagination, however, it is a great story that embellishes the Genghis Khan BBQ at the Sapporo Beer Garden! In this video, Mike gives his honest take and review on what he thinks about this landmark stop for so many tourists when they visit Sapporo and Hokkaido.

Sapporo's $47 Crabs of Hokkaido Buffet | King Crab, Hairy Crab, Snow Crab, and more! 70 minutes!
Hokkaido is known for its great seafood and while in the city of Sapporo within Hokkaido, it would be great to try the food local to the region. And what's best in Sapporo? ... I believe that would be the beer, the ramen, and of course, the crab!
As luck would have it, after visiting (and sampling at) the Sapporo beer museum, I has fortunately enough to find an all you can eat Hokkaido Seafood Buffet with HotPot or Grill... (you have be choose one). But what's unique about this buffet is that for $47 USD, you get all you can eat crab! From the famous Hokkaido Chestnut Crab (or Hairy Crab), to snow crab, and mountains of fresh King Crab! And while the crabs are the star of the buffet, there is so much more to offer from the huge scollops, freshly made crispy tempura, to the stews and live stations.
There is one catch though... you only get 70 minutes! While it should be sufficient time for most, it was a challenge to film and dine under the clock! It was a rush, but fun and exciting!

Bear in mind that what is called Genghis Khan in Japan is a Mongolian Mutton BBQ. Such Mongolian Mutton BBQ is popular in Tokyo but in its birthplace, Hokkaido, it is simply special!

After returning our car, we spent a few days visiting Sapporo City. We didn’t visit a lot of attractions while we were there but we ate all that we could! The Hokkaido specialties, Genghis Khan and Soup Curry turned out to be really good!
