Lagoon Life -A DIFFERENT kind of SAILING - Ailuk Atoll EP82 || Sailing the Marshall Islands

WINDsurfing and WATER collecting - SAILBOAT LIFE EP82
This week we have fun learning to windsurf in the shallows of Ailuk lagoon.
We do a little bit of maintenance on our Honda generator and we make use of the passing squalls
to collect over 150 litres of water into our holding tanks.

Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you.
In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve.
We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle.
So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles.
We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second.
We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel!

Bluewater SAILING passage Majuro to Ailuk Atoll EP77

Bluewater SAILING passage Majuro to Ailuk Atoll
SAILING the Marshall Islands Two nights to Ailuk Atoll

This week we leave Majuro and travel 240 miles north to Ailuk Atoll, in what we think is a good weather window. It turns out that we time it perfectly so that we have to dodge squalls that come across every hour or so!

Mark and Angie from 'Uno Mas' were about five to ten miles in front of us and missed just about every squall, so if we had started our trip an hour earlier we would have had a much smoother trip!

Once in the shelter of Aur and Maloelap atolls we have some lovely sailing and the squalls lessen as we near Ailuk.
After waiting for good light we negotiate the reef pass and drop the hook in front of Ailuk Village on the South east side of the atoll.
We celebrate with an early night after a very tiring two days!

Sailing Canoe capsize and rescue in the Marshall Islands

A Traditional pacific canoe capsizes next to us when we are on anchor at Ailuk Lagoon in the Marshall Islands. The five visiting yachts all head over in their dinghy and help rescue the crew. We drag the overturned and damaged vessel to the shallows where we turn it back over and leave the crew to make their way to shore so they can continue the repairs.

We also enjoy the underwater delights of Ailuk and hang out in another stunning anchorage.

Kwajalein Atoll Drone Highlights

Beautiful footage of Kwajalein atoll. I am happy to have captured the footage I have during my stay here. Still want to capture as much of the magic of this place as possible.

I finally managed to upload this video with slight variations from the one I uploaded last year on vimeo. This was my first drone video made on island and is still my favorite. Hoping for more opportunities to create more Kwaj highlights, but we will see. Adventure may take me elsewhere. Love the people here and the island! Best of luck to everyone leaving (and staying)! Kwaj is shaped like a boomerang for a reason...you never know.

All footage of Kwajalein Island was filmed pre-Army ban on DJI and drones. Dragonfly Superyacht was filmed up by Bigej Islands where there is good kitesurfing but tons of flies (should have mentioned that to you Shaun).

Filmed with a Phantom 4 with PolarPro ND filter

Sailing Lagoon LIFE EP78

Sailing LAID Back Lagoon LIFE in the Marshall Islands
LAID Back Lagoon LIFE- Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands
Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands
This week, we start our lagoon life at Ailuk atoll!
We were given permission to travel to Ailuk Atoll to deliver essential food suppliers on behalf of Mayor Typhoon, so along with Mark and Angie, the crew from our buddy boat 'Uno Mas' , we waste no time in dropping off lots of flour, rice, sugar, coffee and spices, before sharing a drinking coconut and morning tea with locals ,Pumpkin and Emily

We spend time diving within the lagoon where we sadly discover the much of the coral has been badly damaged and bleached, but we do see a couple of schools of fish and have a really relaxed swim-by from an eagle ray,
We also enjoy a beach picnic and sundowners with the crews from 'Forever' and 'Offshore Haven'.

Exploring Kwajalein Atoll

Exploring Kwajalein Atoll
I spent 10 days in Kwajalein for work. It is a tiny island in the Marshall Islands. There wasnt a whole lot to do besides work. There is scuba diving and visiting the neighboring island of Ebeye. It was an opportunity to visit a place that isnt open to visit or tourism since it is a military installation. The US fought here in WWII.

Arno Atoll in Majuro, Marshall Islands

Arno Atoll is a coral atoll of 133 islands in the Pacific Ocean, and forms a legislative district of the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its total land area is only 13 km2. Unlike most other atolls, Arno encloses three different lagoons, a large central one, and two smaller ones in the north and east. Its main lagoon encloses an area of 338.7 km2. At a distance of only 20 kilometres, it is the closest atoll to the Marshall Islands capital, Majuro Atoll, and can be seen looking east from Majuro on a clear day at low tide. The population of Arno Atoll was 1,794 at the 2011 census. The most populous islets are Ajeltokrok, Kobjeltak, Rearlaplap, Langor and Tutu. The largest village is Ine, Arno.

People of Arno are well known for their productivity in making copra (the dried out meat of coconuts, from which coconut oil is extracted). Arno women are renowned for their production of the Kili Bag, a popular handwoven handbag/purse, named after another island in the Marshall. Arno supposedly had a traditional love school.

Arno Atoll was claimed by the Empire of Germany along with the rest of the Marshall Islands in 1884. After World War I, the island came under the South Pacific Mandate of the Empire of Japan. Following the end of World War II, Arno Atoll came under the control of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The island has been part of the independent Republic of the Marshall Islands since 1986.

A Marshallese Celebration and a SAD goodbye EP83 || Marshall Islands Sailing

A Marshallese Celebration and a sad goodbye
We sail up and down Ailuk Lagoon to celebrate a special birthday.
With a new yacht arriving, we head to the southern part of the atoll and meet up with the crew from SV Manna. While we are there we meet up with Emily and Pumpkin and get invited to celebrate Emilys birthday.

We have just enough time to fit some windsurfing in before the party starts.
We then see a good weather window for us to start our trip back to Majuro, so after a fond farewell to Emily and Pumpkin we get ready to leave this beautiful atoll.
