It's been 20 years since I have been in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and as I know a lot can change in that amount of time I guess I wasn’t full expecting it to change so much! Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula and is known for its surf and laidback atmosphere. It seems over the past decade the word has gotten out of how beautiful Santa Teresa is and tourists and foreign investors have been flocking here. So in this Costa Rica Travel Vlog we will be showing you around Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, a bit of Mal Pais and up to the Montezuma Waterfalls on ATV. I will also be talking about my experience returning after 20 years and a little of how this development has affected the locals, which is always something you should keep in mind when traveling, supporting the locals.

Today we share the cost of building a home in Costa Rica!
Note - in the video I verbally said $88/sq meters but it is $88/sq feet. Conversions are hard and apparently I made this too early in the morning before my second cup of coffee.
The average for 2022 is $76 - $128/square foot!

A lot of the house builders in Costa Rica are still building houses the old-school way. Most Tico or local builders are building cement houses because that is what everyone is doing. They have done this for many years and sometimes...cement is NOT the best building material.

Stunning seaside residence integrated into the jungle on Santa Teresa Beach, designed by Studio Saxe
Studio was commissioned to design a beachfront house in the beautiful town of Santa Teresa in Costa Rica. They decided to integrate the jungle experience into the house and also frame the views of the ocean whilst blending with nature.
Concept
Studio Saxe decomposed the mass of the building into a series of pavilions with overlapping roofs that create interesting circulation spaces between the volumes. By dematerializing the volumes, they integrated the home into its lush surroundings.
Design
Studio Saxe used the decomposition of volumes to house the different programs of the project. Pavilions are divided into bedrooms, living spaces, service areas, and together they create a harmony that is weaved together through the circulation of indoor/outdoor spaces. This in turn allows the inhabitant to experience the intense natural surrounding every time they have to move from one place to the other.
Sustainability
The project was conceived as a decomposition of the volumes and this allowed for cross-ventilation due to the exposure of every space to at least 2 or 3 walls to the outside. The extended rooflines are carefully placed to protect from the sun and the rain through a process of bioclimatic design which analyzes the sun patterns, winds, and precipitation to create comfort without the use of energy. An array of sustainable systems such as rainwater catchment, water recycling systems, energy generation, and clever design makes this project a pioneer in sustainable tropical architecture that has passive design at its core.
Construction
Studio was interested in creating the sensation of floating rooflines, thus a series of thin columns support the roof planes in a way that they seem as they are floating A combination of steel and wood construction with concrete foundations allowed for the lightness of space, and this bleeding of boundaries between the structure and the outside.

About the surf in Santa Teresa:
Located less then one block from Beach Break Hotel is one of the best and most consistent surf spots on the Nicoya peninsula. The break consists of about a half mile stretch of beach that's flanked on either side by a cluster of large rocks. Along this half mile stretch are a number of scattered A-frame beach break peaks. The two large clusters of rocks help keep the sand between them at bay, making for constant perfect sand bars. There is almost always something to surf here all year round, but the spot really comes alive during a good south west swell. Although it will break on any tide, it's best on a mid incoming tide. The scattered layout of the break allows one to find a peak all to themselves even on a crowded day. If you are looking for a little change in surf scenery, a quick ride either by car or four wheeler can uncover some world class point breaks that come alive during big swells.
