Libya Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Libya.
Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to five thousand onlookers. Just like the country’s former explorers we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but whioch around two thousand years ago was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little known land in amazing North Africa.

Libya Travel Guide - An African Exceptional Experience

Libya Travel Guide - An African Exceptional Experience

Libya (Arabic: ‏ليبيا‎ ), is a country in North Africa. In the north it has a Mediterranean Sea coast, with Egypt to the east and Tunisia to the west. It also has land borders with Algeria, Chad, Niger and Sudan. More than 90% of the country is desert or semi desert. Archaeological evidence indicates that from as early as 8,000 BC, the coastal plain of Ancient Libya was inhabited by a Neolithic people, the Berbers, who were skilled in the domestication of cattle and the cultivation of crops.

Within Libya as many as five different climatic zones have been recognized, but the dominant climatic influences are Mediterranean and Saharan. In most of the coastal lowland, the climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall is scanty. The weather is cooler in the highlands, and frosts occur at maximum elevations. In the desert interior the climate has very hot summers and extreme diurnal temperature ranges.

Regions & Cities of Libya :

Cyrenaica (Benghazi, Shahhat, Tobruk)
the north eastern region on the Mediterranean Sea

Saharan Libya (Gaberoun, Ghadamis, Sabha, Ghat)
huge southern desert region with amazing scenery and some of the hottest temperatures recorded anywhere in the world

Tripolitania (Tripoli, Gharyan, Misratah, Surt)
the north western region on the Mediterranean Sea with the capital city and ancient Roman ruins

In Tripoli, it is surprisingly hard to find a traditional Libyan restaurant. Most serve western-style cuisine, with a few Moroccan and Lebanese restaurants thrown in. There are also a number of good Turkish restaurants, and some of the best coffee and gelato outside of Italy. There are some wonderful Libyan dishes you should taste in case you are fortunate enough to be invited to a Libyan dinner party or wedding (be prepared to be overfed!). A favourite cafe for the local expatriate community is the fish restaurant in the souq. For the equivalent of a few US dollars, you can enjoy a great seafood couscous. A local speciality is the stuffed calamari.

Major cities have a range of accommodations available, from shabby hotels to 4 star establishments. Prices vary accordingly. While it seems to be diminishing with the arrival of more tourists every year, Libyans have a strong tradition of taking travellers into their own homes and lavishing hospitality on them. This is certainly true in smaller towns and villages.

Libya is an ancient crossroads of civilisations that bequeathed to the Libyan coast some of the finest Roman and Greek ruins in existence, among them Leptis Magna, Cyrene and Sabratha. Libya also has some of the most beautiful corners of the Sahara Desert, from seas of sand the size of Switzerland and sheltering palm-fringed lakes (the Ubari Sand Sea) to remote massifs adorned with prehistoric rock art (the Jebel Acacus), labyrinthine caravan towns (Ghadames) and an isolated black-as-black volcano (Wawa al-Namus) in the desert's heart.

Welcome To Libya Tourism - Unravel Travel TV

Tourism in Libya is an industry still in its infancy but one that will gradually start growing. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, three of which are classical ruins. The Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna in Western Libya and the Greek ruins of Cyrene in the East are big tourist attractions. One of the attractions of Libya's archeological sites, is that they are not as heavily populated by tourists as are other ancient sites in North Africa and southern Europe.

Wadi Matkhandoush (Libya) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Wadi Matkhandoush in Libya.

Situated in southern Libya is a remarkable, dried out river valley, the Wadi Matkhandoush. At first sight although the valley looks rather insignificant it actually contains a unique treasure of Mankind, a treasure that lay hidden for thousands of years until Italian archaeologist and palaeontologist Fabrizio Mori discovered many fascinating carvings in the region’s rocks. Most of the images date back to the Bubalus epoch which is easily recognizable due to the depictions of the ‘Old Buffalo’ that are related to the Cape Buffalo of today. Why the early inhabitants of the desert mountains of Akakus carved images of the indigenous wildlife into so many rock walls of the river valley, remains a mystery. Even so, their creators must have been extremely diligent as tens of thousands of their images have been catalogued. The countless rock paintings make the dried out river valley look like a huge open air museum that features all five periods of Saharan rock art. There are also pictures that date back to the Garamantes, a legendary and mysterious tribe that dominated trans-Sahara trade for many centuries. The discovery of the rock paintings has meant that a once unknown period of the history of Mankind has been preserved for future generations.

Gaddafi's Libya -Documentary English Version Part 1/3

A Nizar Abboud documentary on Libya in the time of Gaddafi and after.

A brief visit to Libya

In February 2009 we went on a 5-day trip to the beautiful and friendly country of Libya. Going mainly to see the amazing archaeology of the ancient city of Leptis Magna, we discovered that Libya has a whole lot more to offer.

The people there are most welcoming and friendly and the place is unspoiled by mass tourism. There is much that has survived from the ancient world, and the sites (which are all over the country) are relatively empty of visitors.

Libya is culturally very sophisticated and downtown Tripoli, though suffering from lack of investment and infrastructure, is safe and welcoming.

For the first time I took a video camera as well as my usual stills cameras, and this short film captures the edited highlights of the footage I took in the brief time we were there.

See all of my Libya photographs here:

Trip to Libya

This is a video I made with the pictures I took during my stay in Libya this Christmas Holiday.

Just wanted to show that Libya has so many incredible places and that if you ever have a chance, it is worth going there. However it is not a very touristy country, so it makes it a bit more special and also more difficult to travel to. ^^
Right now due to the war it is probably not a good time to go there.

Around The World : Libya

Visit of Sabratha Libya

Full visit of the ruins of the ancient roman city of Sabratha around 80 Km west of Tripoli (Libya)
Sabratha古代ローマの市の台なしの完全な訪問トリポリの西のおよそ80キロメートル
Ancient Sabratha:
Sabratha's port was established, perhaps about 500 BC, as a Phoenician trading-post that served as a coastal outlet for the products of the African hinterland. Sabratha became part of the short-lived Numidian Kingdom of Massinissa before being Romanized and rebuilt in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The Emperor Septimus Severus was born nearby in Leptis Magna, and Sabratha reached its monumental peak during the rule of the Severans. The city was badly damaged by earthquakes during the 4th century, particularly the quake of AD 365. It was rebuilt on a more modest scale by Byzantine governors. Within a hundred years of the Arab conquest of the maghreb, trade had shifted to other ports and Sabratha dwindled to a village.
The archaeological site :
Besides its magnificent late 3rd century theater, that retains its three-storey architectural backdrop, Sabratha has temples dedicated to Liber Pater, Serapis and Isis. There is a Christian basilica of the time of Justinian and remnants also of some of the mosaic floors that enriched elite dwellings of Roman north Africa (for example, at the Villa Sileen, near Al-Khoms), although these are most clearly preserved in the coloured patterns of the seaward (or Forum) baths, directly overlooking the shore, and in the black and white floors of the Theater baths.
There is an adjacent museum containing some treasures from Sabraha, but others can be seen in the national museum in Tripoli (wikipedia)

Libya, the silent treasures

You may not know that Libya is far more than vast sweeps of desert. Libya is a country of extraordinary and unexpected variety, so rich that it was coveted and conquered in turn by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Byzantines-all of whom left their mark. Simply one of the unknown corners of the world, it all makes for exciting discoveries.

I do not mean these photos to be disrespectful. I genuinely see beauty in the things I photograph, and I want to encourage people to look at stuff they might not normally look at and see it in a different way.

At the same time, I think it is important to call attention to the way in which we treat people and the environment - in nature and in our cities. I hope my photographs help people open their eyes to what we are doing to the world.

Of all the Libya photographs I have posted to YouTube and Flickr, most are (I hope) affectionate and aesthetically pleasing, and reveal great wonders - such as Sabratha, and Leptis Magna. If anyone wants to see what a beautiful country Libya is and all the great diversity it has, I would urge them to take a look at this Flickr group:
