Tour Montserrat With Us | Tiny Volcanic Island | Giant In Music History

In this vlog, learn more about Montserrat with us, as we tour this beautiful island.

Some Facts About Montserrat:

1. Montserrat is a volcanic island in the South-Eastern Caribbean.
2. Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano, which had been dormant for centuries, became active in July 1995, erupted, and buried the capital city of Plymouth, which is considered a modern-day Pompeii. The most recent eruption of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano was on June 25, 1997.
3. After the eruptions, the majority of the island’s population fled the island, mostly for the United Kingdom.
4. The population in Montserrat, at present, is approximately 5000 people.
5. Being a volcanic island, most of Montserrat’s beaches are black sand beaches.
6. Montserrat can be visited by small aircrafts, ferries, and other boats of similar size. The most straightforward way to Visit Montserrat is by flying from Antigua.
7. Montserrat is called the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean due to its Irish heritage and also its lush green land.
8. Montserrat is the only country outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a national holiday. The St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the biggest celebration of the year on the island.
9. Montserrat is especially well-known in the music industry thanks, in part, to AIR Studios Montserrat, a state-of-the-art recording studio built by Sir George Martin, world-renowned producer of the Beatles. This is where Stevie Wonder recorded “Ebony and Ivory” with Paul McCartney. Many other artists, including Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Duran Duran, and Eric Clapton recorded at AIR Studios Montserrat.
10. Arrow, also known as the Might Arrow, the original artist who created the soca hit “Hot Hot Hot” is Montserratian. He recorded “Hot Hot Hot” at AIR Studios Montserrat.

On Montserrat, A Unique Festival blends African and Irish Heritage

On this episode of Destination Diaspora, we take you to Montserrat!

Montserrat is known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because of its lush green landscape and the fact that many of its early settlers were from Ireland. It’s the only place outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s day as a national holiday.

On Montserrat, Saint Patrick’s day became a national holiday in 1985 but not to celebrate St. Patrick, who is patron saint of Ireland. And the 10-day festival which takes is not just about parties and fetes although speaking from experience they are really good.

Montserrat’s St. Patrick’s festival actually commemorates the enslaved Africans known as the freedom fighters who lost their lives after their planned Saint Patrick’s ay slave rebellion set for March 17th, 1768 was discovered. Although unsuccessful, it was the beginning of movements for the abolition of slavery on the island.

So the St. Patrick’s festival is really about honoring the memory of those freedom fighters.
Black people, people of African descent and the role they played in helping to bring an end of slavery. On Montserrat, the holiday weaves together two heritages, acknowledging the early Irish influence while honoring the enslaved Africans who rebelled against it.

Supernatural Mountain Holy Grail | Montserrat Spain | Full Time Travel Vlog 10

Montserrat is one hour from Barcelona but bit of a hidden gem. Although plenty of tourists visit the monastery, the walking routes are very quiet. This place has a fascinating history with Napoleon and Himmler paying it a visit. Himmler specifically came looking for the holy grail which he believed would give him supernatural powers. It is easy to get here from Barcelona and a perfect day trip. We sleep in our car again and find out that many truck stops have showers to use for a small fee, a great budget travel hack.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

WHO ARE WE? ????

Sailing to Montserrat & Touring The Exclusion Zone

The big appeal to sailing Montserrat was to check out the abandoned (or should I say demolished?) city of Plymouth. Why was it demolished? Montserrat's volcano became active and blew it's top. And the activity started in 1995 and has been going since then.

The volcano is still smoking.

Two years prior we sailed from Guadeloupe to Antigua bypassing Montserrat. The weather wasn't right for us to get in there. In fact, Montserrat isn't known for having a calm anchorage. You have to choose your weather window wisely. Or, you can put the boat on another island and take a ferry over.

Montserrat is an island in the Caribbean Sea, in the Leeward Islands. Its nearest neighbours in the island chain include Guadeloupe to the southeast, Antigua to the north-east and Nevis to the northwest. The island is 16 km long and 11 km wide, with a coastline of about 40 km.

Montserrat is known for its coral reefs and its caves along the shore. These caves house many species of bats, and efforts are underway to monitor and protect the ten species of bats from extinction. The Montserrat tarantula (Cyrtopholis femoralis) is the only species of tarantula native to the island

The volcano killed dozens and 7,000 people evacuated the island, leaving nearly half the island desecrated and abandoned. Since the volcanoes, however, more than 1,000 people have moved back to Montserrat, raising the population to 5,215

Though often remembered for a devastating volcanic eruption in 1997 that buried the capital of Plymouth, Montserrat remains a thriving, wildlife-rich island that has rebuilt and restored itself based on its strong cultural traditions. Here are just a few ways to explore

Montserrat ????️ Beautiful Hidden Island Very Few People Visit

Montserrat is one unknown and rare destination.

A few decades ago, Montserrat was known as one of the most visited tourist hubs because of the recording studio, which was opened in the country by the famous producer.

However, the volcanic eruption in the country left it devastated for the years. According to recent researchers, the country is still in the healing phase but it still consists of the lowest annual visitors of 8000 people only.
