→ Huge thank you to IRANomad Tours, who invited me on this adventure. Check out their work in responsible tourism here:

I find it funny when I hear people calling me a digital nomad. My privileged way of life, where I get to work on my computer from anywhere in the world, is nothing like the lifestyles of truly nomadic people. And there's fewer and fewer of them left in the world.

On this adventure, I joined IRANomad Tours and a family of Bakhtiari nomads in Iran - some of the very last nomads in the world - as they crossed the Zagros Mountains. Together with their giant flock of sheep and goats, and other families from their tribe, we trekked over the mountains for a week, towards their summer pasture. It turned out to be one of the most adventurous and life-changing journeys I've taken so far.

A documentary about Maryam taking refuge with her family after her husband left: Nomadic lifestyle

Amid intense arguments and fights, Ali Agha made a difficult decision and left the house, leaving Maryam behind. As the dust settles, Maryam finds herself alone, struggling with the emotional aftermath of their tumultuous relationship.

Maryam was left alone and a missing girl named Soghara

Maryam's heart was moved by the recognition of shared vulnerability and the need for compassion. In that moment, a bond was formed between them, one that would prove to be a lifeline for both of them.

Maryam and Soghari started a journey full of resistance and strength together. The challenges they faced were many, but their determination was unwavering. Maryam became a small light of guidance and gave comfort and reassurance in the face of adversity.

While navigating a world full of obstacles, Maryam and Soghari learned valuable lessons about trust, resilience and the power of human connection. They found that even in the darkest of times, an act of kindness can light a glimmer of hope and change a life.

Through their shared experiences, Maryam was healed and found a new sense of purpose. She learned to channel her pain into empathy and embraced her role as a protector and nurturer. Soghari, in turn, blossomed under Maryam's care and discovered his inner strength and resistance.

Their journey was not without trials, but Maryam and Soghari faced them head on and drew strength from each other. They formed an unbreakable bond, a testament to the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.

Over time, Maryam and Soghari's story became an inspiration to others who had faced their own hardships. Their story of overcoming adversity and finding solace in unexpected places served as a reminder that even in the depths of despair, there is always a glimmer of hope.

In the end, Maryam and Soghari's journey was not just for survival. It was a testament to the transformative power of love, compassion and the indomitable human spirit. Together, they proved that even in the face of enormous challenges, strength, healing, and belonging can be found.

Life In Isolated Mountain Village in Iran - Sar Agha Seyed

High in the Zagros Mountains of Iran lies Sar Agha Seyed, a village forgotten by time, unchanged for 600 years. This remote and isolated village, accessible only through winding mountain paths, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Its history is as layered as the mountains that cradle it, rich with tales passed down through generations. The village is named after the holy shrine of Seyed Isa, known as Aqa Seyyed, a descendant of the Shias' seventh Imam.

Sar Agha Seyed's unique character is immediately apparent in its architecture - a stunning example of harmony between human habitation and the natural environment. The homes, built in a stair-stepped fashion, cascade down the mountainside, each roof serving as the courtyard for the house above. This ingenious design not only maximizes space in the rugged terrain but also speaks volumes about the resourcefulness and adaptability of the villagers.

Qashqai People

Nomads (Kooch Neshinan) in Iran are a group of people who travel and move from one place to another along with their tribe, family, and all their belongings. Kooch Neshini (Nomadism) is the tribal lifestyle, and their economy is based on herding. Shifting from one place to another and moving as a large group is the most important aspects of Nomadic life. Nomads move to Yeylagh (cooler countryside) in summer and back to Gheshlagh (warmer areas) in winter throughout their yearly and shift with the seasons. Iran’s Nomadic tour is an opportunity to visit this great attraction that is still present in the 21st century. 7 days tour of Iran’s Nomads is an exciting touring program that allows you to learn about the culture of Nomads and experience their life along with one of the main tribes called The Great Tribe of Qashqai. Through this tour, you get to live their life, taste their wood stove-cooked local food, see their style of animal herding and understand their customs.
Qashqai is a conglomeration of tribes in Iran consisting of mostly Turkic peoples and Lurs, Kurds, and Arabs.[5] Almost all of them speak a Western Oghuz Turkic dialect known as the Qashqai language, which they call Turki, and Persian (the national language of Iran) for formal use. The Qashqai mainly live in Fars, Khuzestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Bushehr Southern Isfahan, especially around the cities of Shiraz and Firuzabad in Fars. The majority of Qashqai people were originally nomadic pastoralists, and some remain so today. The traditional nomadic Qashqai traveled with their flocks twice yearly to and from the summer highland pastures north of Shiraz roughly 480 km or 300 miles south to the lower (and warmer) winter pastures lands near the Persian Gulf, to the southwest of Shiraz. The majority, however, have now become partially or wholly sedentary. The trend towards settlement has been increasing markedly since the 1960s.

Iran, Nomadic Life Style -

Experiencing life in new areas is always enjoyable for me and this time, I went to live near the Qashqai nomads and lived there for one day. This is Boyaq Camp, located in the Zagros Mountain Range, North of Fars Province, Sepidan County, Kahkaran Road; it’s one of the yaylaks of Qashqai nomads. This camp is nearly 120 km away from Shiraz City. I really enjoyed sleeping in the nomad tent, in a mosquito net. It reminded me of the old days that we used to sleep in the yard and I learned many new things in just one day.

Zahra found a large cavern located beside a waterfall in the mountains.

Hello, dear friends...
You know Zahra!!!
Zahra is a village woman who loved nature. She spent most of her days wandering through the lush green forests and valleys of her Iranian village, always in search of hidden gems of nature. One day, as she was crossing a particularly beautiful valley, Zahra spotted a large cave in the distance. Intrigued, she decided to follow the water path and reach the cave. She made her way through the valley, picking mountain herbs and vegetables as she went, and finally reached a breathtaking waterfall that led to the cave. Zahra couldn't resist the lure of the cave, so she climbed the impassable rocks and made her way inside. The cave was full of water holes and water dripping from its roof, and there were plants that were bent to catch the sunlight. The cave was also surrounded by beautiful flowers, making it a truly magical place. Zahra decided to make a fire and cook lunch in the cave. She cooked a delicious meal of vegetables and herbs she had picked earlier. As she ate, she couldn't help but marvel at the view of the cave and its surroundings. But as the sun began to set, Zahra knew it was time to return home. She descended the impassable mountain, feeling both satisfied and fulfilled from her day of discovery and adventure in the beautiful natural world. Zahra continued to explore the wonders of nature, always searching for new adventures and experiences in her beloved Iranian village.

Nomadic Life in Iran

They belong to the land and are always on the run. Nowhere is their home and day live under the sun. Yes, I’m talking about the proud nomadic tribes in Iran who are the symbol of patriotism and the way of Persian warrior. Although facing many challenges of the modern world, many nomadic tribes in Iran still refuse to give up their life on the go and settle down as many have done before.

In the 21st century, this kind of behavior can only show us that these people are so dedicated to their way of life and so bound to their beliefs that nothing, even the glamorous shiny lights of the big cities and their contemporary lifestyles can shake their will. Iran nomadic tribes, at the beginning of every winter or summer, pack up their whole belongings and lead their flocks to the warmth of their summer resorts and vice-versa, in search of better living conditions and suitable lands. Iran has a vast diversity of nomadic tribes and ethnicity and that makes describing them time-consuming and complicated.
Harsh winters and blazing summers are the main reasons for migrations and the existence of nomadic tribes in Iran. Centuries before the birth of Christ, the nomads of Iran had been roaming the mainland of Iran’s plateau tirelessly and probably centuries after the big cities are gone, their lifestyle will be the only one that lives on. Nomadic tribes in Iran have had a tremendous impact on Iran’s history, both political and social. As an instance, the Bakhtiari tribe had an enormous impact on Safavid dynasty (almost 600 years ago) and Afsharid dynasty (roughly 400 years ago) with their sphere of influence spreading through most of Iran’s central and western regions.
Some of the well-known nomadic tribes in Iran are the Bakhtiari and the Qashqai tribes with more than 300 thousand nomads between them. The rest of the tribes like the Shahsavan tribe, Mamivand, and others have less than 50000 people living the vagabond lifestyle.
