5 Things NOT To Do In Sweden

What NOT to Do in Sweden | Avoid These 10 Mistakes!

Swedish people are often polite and friendly, and they don't show their dislike very openly. But there are some things that Swedes HATE above all others! Avoid these pitfalls if you visit Sweden.

This list includes some common and some more unexpected items. They might be especially unexpected if you come from a very different culture compared to the Nordics and Scandinavia.

These are the ten things discussed in this video:

10. Buying a round of drinks for everyone at the table. It might sound like a common thing to do, but you should be wary of that in Sweden.
9. Asking about people's salaries. This is still a very taboo topic in Sweden, so avoid it.
8. Boasting is rude in almost every culture, but it's especially rude in Sweden due to the Law of Jante (Jantelagen).
7. If you mix up Sweden and Denmark, or Sweden and Norway, then you've really gone and annoyed us Swedes...
6. Don't stand on the wrong side of the escalator. Really. This is something only extremely ignorant or rude people do.
5. Many people are atheist or agnostic in Sweden, so discussing your religion is seen as....quite odd.
4. It's common to speak loudly in many cultures. Sweden is NOT one of those cultures.
3. Give people some space! Do not walk too close to people.
2. Here's a silly one that I just had to include: don't talk about the Finnish hockey team. We've been beaten a few too many times by them.
1. And finally, the most important thing not to do: do not EVER cut in line. Seriously. Don't even think about it.

10 Shocks of Visiting Sweden

5 Things You Will LOVE & HATE About Stockholm

What to Eat in Sweden

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

9 Things NOT To Do in Sweden

Get more Tips here!
Some of the typical faux pas many tourists commit when traveling to Sweden!

1. Don't be Late!
In Sweden it's considered to be extremely rude.

So you arrive at your hosts house -on time!- and your served with some lovely rotmos med fläsk (carrot-mash and pork)

2. Watch your ettiquette!
Don't start eating until your host says Skol and welcome. Also, don't forget to say Thank you for last time the next time you meet your host.

3. Don't boast!
If you're the CEO of a company don't boast about it. Swedes tend to look negatively at personal success according to Jante Law.
Also Don't Use Highly Animated Body Language! This is the quickest way to irritate the locals, and you can expect to be gently reprimanded if your voice carries over to the next table.

4. Don't Mention the Finnish Ice Hockey Team
When you are in Sweden, you support the Swedish Hockey team. End of story. This is the safest option, unless you want to start an argument. Don’t mention any other hockey teams. For the time being, you are a Swedish hockey patriot! The Swedes and the Finns have a long and complex history, so anyone not from Sweden or Finland had best leave it at that.

5. Don't Feel Pressured by Silence!
What you may perceive as an awkward silence, a Swede will perceive as a comfortable pause.
Did you know that Scandinavian countries are among the safest in the world?
They let their 7 year old children walk to school on their own!

6. Don't Educate the Swedes
This can come across as extremely arrogant, whether you mean to or not. Swedes read a lot and take their education pretty seriously even from a young age. Just try not to look like a foreign know-it-all.

7. Don't Diss Swedish Beer...Or Anything Else
Or go on about how much better the beer is back home. In fact, don’t talk about how much better anything is in your home county. They'll consider it rude and obnoxious.

8. Don't Invade Personal Space
The Swedes love their personal space. They are not touchy-feely by nature. Don’t stand too close at the cash register or sit next to someone on a bus if there is an available seat elsewhere.

9. Don't Get Decaf
It's awful and not always available. Coffee and cinnamon buns give the people a reason to get together and be social especially in Stockholm.

Top 10 Things I HATE about SWEDEN

I like Sweden. I like living here. But that doesn't mean that Sweden is a perfect country - far from it! This is a video about the top 10 things I hate about Sweden.

For more videos every week, subscribe to the channel:

Also, join the Three Star Vagabond Facebook group to discuss upcoming videos:

This video is from the perspective of a Swede who has lived his entire life here, but hopefully I've had some influence from other cultures as well. So this might not be a typical Swedish perspective on the problems about living in Sweden.

I cover a wide range of topics, from the Swedish consensus mentality where everyone always have to come to a common agreement during a meeting, to the semi-state owned companies PostNord and SJ. But I also dive into some sensitive and controversial topics. So make sure that you're not too thin-skinned if you're a Swede watching this video.

Worth noting is that this won't be a list similar to what you find if you just google things people hate about Sweden. Many complaints that foreigners have about the country are not necessarily things I agree with. The supposed coldness of the Swedish people, for example. That's not a bug - it's a feature! That's how we are, and how I believe people should behave.

All in all there might be a few surprises and some obvious items as well. For example... No one really approves of the recent crime waves with gang wars we've had in Sweden! That's probably a universally hated thing...

5 Reasons NOT to Travel to SWEDEN

Sweden is not worth visiting, why travelling to the Scandinavian country will give you more headaches than pleasure, the Swedish country has it's pros and cons. I give you 5 reasons not to travel to Sweden.

Sweden, the scandavanian country that wants to make the world a better place, it has entertainment,
Gothenburg is okay, Malmo is close to Copenhagen, but Stockholm is the best part of Sweden, it’s the capital city, it’s not the best capital city you can’t compare in to Paris but you can compare it to Edinburgh. There are good bars and clubs in the capital, the Swedish can’t hit the dance floor, they’re bad at singing and partying like cavemen. Furthermore if you’re not in to going to drinking in bars, there are only a handful of quality restaurants to choose from, and when you explored them, and it becomes boring, swedes like doing the same things, they like eating the same food, and give a 5 star rating each time they visit, they will mercilessly defend their appetite....

Avoid These SCAMS When Traveling to Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is the 12th safest city in the world, but that doesn't mean that there aren't things to watch out for. In this video I tell you about scams to avoid when you're visiting the capital of Sweden!

You're not going to find a huge list of scams to watch out for, but that also means that you might be lulled into thinking that everything is safe in Stockholm. You always have to use common sense, keep an eye out for things that look out of place, and keep an eye on your belongings.

In this video I cover the following topics, among others:

- Taxi scams that unfortunately are completely legal in Sweden
- ATM credit card sniffing
- Pickpocketing and what to look out for in bars in general
- Illegal games on the street corners of Old Town (Gamla stan)
- Overpriced shops and restaurants
- The picture taking scam
- Scams within the housing market in Stockholm

I also discuss a bit of a sensitive topic, when it comes to the beggars that have become quite prevalent in Sweden lately.

But I also take some time to go through things that are sometimes listed as scams online, that absolutely should not be classified as scams. These include, for example, the Vasa musem, the Arlanda Express train and Gröna lund, a boardwalk amusement park.

Stay safe so you can make sure you enjoy the lovely city of Stockholm!

5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

Grab some of our gear

Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching!

Grab a Wolters World Shirt

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.
