The Iron Gates Sailing Down the Danube
The Iron Gates (Romanian: Porțile de Fier; Serbian: Ђердапска клисура / Đerdapska klisura or Гвоздена капија / Gvozdena kapija) is a gorge on the river Danube. It forms part of the boundary between Serbia (to the south) and Romania (north). In the broad sense it encompasses a route of 134 km (83 mi); in the narrow sense it only encompasses the last barrier on this route, just beyond the Romanian city of Orșova, that contains two hydroelectric dams, with two power stations, Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station and Iron Gate II Hydroelectric Power Station.

The Iron Gates and Djerdap Locks on the River Danube - Relaxation Video
Cruise along a particularly scenic stretch of the river, as the Danube passes through the southern stretches of the dramatic Carpathian mountains and the foothills of the Balkans to the 'Iron Gates', a gorge formed by sheer cliffs. The passage was infamous in ancient times as the water level was much lower, making navigation treacherous. Now the water level has been raised and shipping hazards removed, but the journey is still exciting, and you'll be able to watch the ship manoeuvre through two locks by the Djerdap power stations.

Iron Gate One, Hydroelectric power plant from Romania
The Iron Gate One Hydroelectric Power Station is the largest dam on the Danube river and one of the largest hydro power plants in Europe. It is located on the Iron Gate gorge, between Romania and Serbia.
The project started in 1964 as a joint-venture between the governments of Romania and Yugoslavia for the construction of a major dam on the Danube River which would serve both countries. At the time of completion in 1972, it was 10th largest hydroelectric power plant in the world with twelve Kaplan turbines generating 2,052 MW, divided equally between the two countries at 1,026 MW each.

U toku krstarenja gosti će imati priliku da uživaju u najlepšem delu Đerdapske klisure. Prolazi se pored mesta gde je rimski imeprator Trajan ostavio svoj neizbrisiv trag u steni poznatiji kao Trajanova tabla, prolazi se kroz Mali Kazan – mesto gde je Dunav na celom svom toku najdublji, zatim pored statue poslednjeg dačanskog kralja Decebala uklesane u steni i pravoslavnog manastira Mrakonija, tu su i signalne (balon) stanice na Dunavu i naizad – mesto gde je Dunav na celom svom toku najuži.
Polasci su subotom i nedeljom od 12:45h i u 15h tokom cele letnje sezone i radnim danima od 11h.

Motorcycle tour along Danube river through amazing Iron Gates gorges [SLIDESHOW]
Short three days tour: from town of Šid in western Serbia, over the Fruška gora mountain (Frankenwald); overnight stay in beautiful small town of Bela Crkva (Weißkirchen), entering Romania west from Bela Crkva in Kaluđerovo border crossing, along Nera river following Serbian-Romanian border (road 571C), in Socol village taking road 57A ... and then along Danube river through amazing gorges called Đerdapska klisura (Iron Gates, Eisernes Tor) all the way to city of Orșova, near the dam (Iron Gate 1) with hydroelectric power station.
Way back was again through Danube gorges - yes, they are breathtaking - with another stay in Bela Crkva. Next day, first thing in the morning - after breakfast, of course - was crossing Danube with old ferry between villages Stara Palanka and Ram. Next stage was taking road 373 for another few kilometers along Danube, roads 34 and 33 direction city of Požarevac and than highway A1 all the way to Serbian capitol Belgrade.
