48 Hours in Albania 2019: Insane 50km Theth to Valbone Hike from Shkoder

We had no idea what to expect in Albania, and to be totally honest, Anne planned this entire trip as a surprise and Jeff had zero idea where they were going until literally the moment they landed in Tirana.

Hiking the amazing Peaks of the Balkans trails, the hiking in Albania is absolutely stunning and spoiled my over tourism of anykind.

We visited the amazing blue eye watering hole for a swim and hiked over 50km around Theth and across the ridge to Valbone - one of the most stunning hikes we have ever done.

We didn't know much about Albania before we landed in Tirana, but we'll never forget it now - one of our most adventurous and surprising weekend adventures yet!

Albania may have a sordid past, but it will be one of the most popular hiking and adventure travel destinations in the coming years, we promise, so go now before it gets too busy!

While you may only know Albania for their stunning beaches in the south or as the bad guys in many movies, it is so, so much more and somewhere to be added to your bucket list immediately!

Enjoy beautiful Albania like we did!

24. Our own private Island Paradise | Exploring Albania | Sailing Sunday

If your subscribe button doesn’t have a D on the end, then click that button now to follow along the journey ????

After checking into Albania and exploring Sarande, this week we head south to Ksamil Islands for a few nights to dodge some wind and swell rolling into the harbor.

Ksamil Islands are absolutely amazing and not only are we the only boat anchored in the whole area, but every morning/afternoon we had the beach all to ourselves, with the exception of a puppy we found!

After an amazing week exploring the islands and swimming everyday, we check out of Sarande heading north to explore some more incredible anchorages along the coast of Albania.

Albania coast guard info:
To check into Albania you need an agent. We emailed our agent a few nights prior (details in the video) and only needed to call on VHF as we entered into the harbor. We then needed to inform our agent that we were going to Ksamil islands for 3 nights then returning to Sarande. Upon arriving at Ksamil islands and anchoring we received a friendly wave from a coast guard, then when returning to Sarande to leave for the final time we checked out of the port with our agent and informed them of our next port, Durres, but we will be anchoring the whole way up the coast along the way. It was that simple!

Please Like and Subscribe to follow our journey as we sail up the coast in Albania!

We went from Tirana to Shkodër to discover one of my favourite places in the Balkans! This is a great little town to visit in Albania, especially if you're on the way to Montenegro. We also watched some of the World Cup with other local people.

This is from a trip I did with my Mum through The Balkans in the summer of 2018. I didn't publish them at the time because I wanted to catch up on my posting schedule and so I ended up skipping a whole bunch of videos. Now I have the chance to catch up and share them with you!

23. Everyone told us NOT to go! | Traveling Albania | Sailing Sunday

Sailing in Albania !? That's right, watch as we explore Saranda and head south to Ksamil Islands. Brittni got attacked by a pair of balls at the dock and I got some beautiful drone footage to share with you all.

Majority of sailors told us to avoid Albania, said it was unsafe, dangerous and officials were difficult to deal with. There are no big marinas, but you can see all the changes are happening for tourism and in the near future will be a sailing hotspot and checking in couldn't have been any easier with our agent (Saranda Summer Tours - info@sarandasummertours.com).

Albanian Alps | Valbona to Theth Hike

Yes, Albania has Alps too! Now imagine two stunning National Parks connected by one spectacular mountain trail. Then imagine that these places are so remote that it's actually quicker to walk between them (approx 7 hours), than drive (approx 8 hours!)! That's the Valbona-Theth pass, renowned for its beauty and an essential part of our 3-7 night Best of Albania Adventures whenever possible (the trail is only passable June-Sept and is moderate level requiring a decent level of fitness). We had the chance to film this hike in September 2019 - hope you enjoy watching!

Our Albania adventures are the perfect extension to our week-long active holidays in Montenegro, combining two amazing countries in one vacation. Find out more at

HIKING IN ALBANIA - 600 km from Valbona to Saranda

Before reaching Albania, we heard absolutely everything about this country, the best and the worst. Now, after having hiked 600 kilometers there from North to South, we are happy to share with you our experience of Spring 2019.

We literally fell in love with Albania and Albanians. We discovered a country where the nature is still all around and where people would not only invite you for a dinner and a homestay, they would give you their bed to make you feel at home and to give you the best experience of their country.
No less than 6 guests came to hike with in this amazing country!

We arrived from Montenegro in the Valley of Valbona, climbed to Theth before heading towards the Lake Skodër. We discovered the surroundings of the Lake Uzle and took a ferry ride on the Lake Komani. From there, we went to Kosovo and North Macedonia. We came back to Albania on the edge of the lake Ohrid, in Pogradec and went adventuring in the mountains of Korça. The canyon of Osum was spectacular and the city of Gjirokaster very nice. Of course, we visited the Blue Eye, probably the most touristic place of Albania. Finally, we reached the sea between Saranda and Ksamil before crossing the border with Greece.

Traveling to ALBANIAN ALPS!! First Impressions of THETH, Albania

???? TRAVEL ALBANIAN ALPS:
???????? DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS:

On the morning of my fifth day in Albania, I hit the ground running with a road trip from Shkodër to the town of Theth in the Albanian Alps! Come along with me as I travel to the Albanian Alps for the first time and share my first impressions of Theth, Albania!

???? BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR:
???? RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day began in Shkodër at 6:30 in the morning. We’d be driving three hours into the Albanian Alps to Theth, one of the most beautiful areas in the country. I couldn’t wait to get there. As we passed through Shkodër, we passed by a neverending bazaar where they sold lots of fruits and vegetables. First, we stopped at Byreke Pica for some byrek, but they weren’t ready yet. So we went on the hunt for some elsewhere!

There were so many bicyclists in Shkodër. Then, we found some byrek at Peta Byreku. We bought eight and took them with us on the road. I was told the views in the mountains are beautiful. It would be about 90 minutes before we reached the entrance to the mountains. The road we were following becomes a rocky road once you reach the mountains, so you need to drive a 4x4 there.

We passed lots of farmlands and businesses along the road, which also leads to Montenegro. Along the way, I dug into my byrek, which was super hot and full of cheese! The road condensed down to one lane as it headed up int the mountains. The road winds through the mountains.

Theth wasn’t inhabited thousands of years ago. When the Ottomans arrived in Albania, people from Shkodër fled into the mountains to hide. After Communism fell in 1991, they returned back to Shkodër, abandoning their houses and lands. When tourism kicked up, they returned to Theth to open guest houses in the mountains!

We make a stop and met some men drinking rakija and water. The mountain scenery was gorgeous. It reminded me of Switzerland! There, I enjoyed another of our cheese byrek. It was cheesy and flaky and golden brown. Then, I had some plum rakija and a strong espresso. The rakija was strong and really good. I had fallen in love with them! I liked the plum rakija more than the grape—the grape is too strong!

Then, we continued our road trip into the Albanian Alps! We drove past some cows and reached the dirt road leading further into the national park. There was a little wooden balcony where we could enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains. It reminded me of Montenegro and Bosnia. It was very green and full of peaks!

From there, we continued on. The road got worse as we went. I learned that snow sometimes completely blocks this road in the winter! There’s a famous cross along the way near an amazing viewpoint. The cross has been there for at least 200 years! From the viewpoint, you can see Theth nestled in the valley below. We were on a peak in the middle of the valley with mountains all around us!

Within the next year, the road should be paved, which will help cut down the travel time to get there since the roads will be smoother. Then, we stopped at a spot where water trickles down from the mountains. The water comes out a spout shaped like and hand and is ice-cold!

There are about 100 guesthouses in the area along this road. They range in size and variety. Theth National Park is the largest national park in the country. I couldn’t wait to have lunch and explore the area for the next five hours! But you’ll see that in the next video!

Driving ALBANIA'S Worst Road ???????? | Balkan Van Life Series

Would you drive Albania's infamous SH75 road from Korçë to Përmet? We were warned about the dangers this road would present but we couldn't visit Albania for a second time without at least trying to drive from one end to the other.

Before long our van started throwing up problems and as the road got worse, so did our LDV Convoy. What entailed next were roadside repairs, flashing warning lights and more potholes than you've ever seen.
All the while the death-defying drops into the canyon below loomed next to us on this punishing yet spectacular road.

If you enjoy seeing us push our campervan to its limits as much as we do then you'll want to watch this one- but if you're afraid of heights then close your eyes!

A little about us...

We’re Lucy and Ben, two photographers from Cornwall, UK who’ve been living and travelling in our self-converted LDV Convoy camper van for the best part of four years. We’ve travelled all across Europe from West to East documenting our encounters with the people we meet as well as our own travels and adventures. We embrace the ethos of slow travel and minimal living, generally spending between 2 and 8 weeks in each country, getting to know each culture, cuisine and people as though we were locals ourselves as well as hiking, wild swimming and camping as we go.

We are currently on our third 7 month long road trip, travelling through the Balkans for the second time beginning in the French Alps and venturing as far East as Turkey, visiting 13 countries in between.

Our plan was simple: visit every country in Europe in our rusty tin can of a van. So far we’ve made it to 28 countries, travelling as far West as Portugal and as far East as Ukraine, having all sorts of crazy adventures in between.

Our main motivation for our travels is to capture photos and create documentary projects, so our van is primarily a vessel for our photography. We tend to focus on topics such as nomadism, traditional ways of life, the effects of recent political events and the difficulties of living in remote rural areas as well as documenting our own adventures and lifestyle on our various social channels.

We’ve had so many memorable experiences on our travels, and our photo documentary projects have given us an intimate insight into the lives of many different people and brought us together as friends.

We've visited the folk living in one of the most remote corners of Europe in the Albanian Alps, experienced the culture and traditions of the horsemen in the Hortóbagy National Park, and experienced life with Roma gypsies in their village in Romania, and there's still so much more to explore...
