To say this area of Kaokoland is remote is one massive understatement.
Everything is extreme!!
The roads, the heat, the dry, the nothingness, no people, just you and the elements.
We leave Pupa falls and make the trek across to and down the famous Van Zyl’s Pass, a proper test of man and machine……and trailer.
So many people said that we were crazy to try it with our trailer in tow, but a few folks whose knowledge we trust said to give it a bash, so we did.
The Marienfluss, which is a desolate valley which lies to the west of the mountains, has been a bucket list location for us for many years and to finally get there, and camp in this unspoilt wilderness is incredible and won’t be forgotten, EVER!

The Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park are only reachable in the dry season, since in the wet season it is completely flooded.
To say its far from anywhere is a bit of an understatement. Its a solid days drive from a tar road (hard to do nowadays sadly!!)
While most of Kafue is quite sparse with animals, Busanga and it’s permanent water attracts huge herds of plains game, and the predators that follow them.
In our mind, it is one of the great African wilderness areas and worth the mission to get there.
We stayed at Bongololo Camp at Moshi, which is the closest campsite to the plains.

Lake Tanganyika is the world's longest freshwater lake. It is the second-oldest freshwater lake in the world, the second-largest by volume, and the second-deepest, in all cases after Lake Baikal in Siberia.
But what makes it truly special for us is Chris and Louise's @lakeshorelodge
After a couple of days of tough travel, we arrived at this incredible spot owned by this amazing couple.
Apart from the obvious beauty of the place, the hospitality and friendly vibe is second to none.

Welcome to Joma Adventure Lodge in Leopard Bay, Salima! One of Malawi's premier lakeshore districts just over an hour from Lilongwe.
Joma Adventure Lodge newly opened in October 2022. Located on the Lifuwu side of Salima in Leopard Bay close by Kabumba and Kumbali Lake Retreat.
They currently have a total of 8 rooms (4 ground level, 4 upper level). It is 90,000 MK per night for residents for the room (that sleeps 2) which includes a hearty breakfast! Day visitors can enjoy the bar and restaurant with meals averaging around 10,000 MK.
There's a small beach that's completely private and quiet. The pool is still under renovation.

Overlanding Malawi in the Wet Season // EP.45
We are Overlanding around beautiful Malawi in the wet season, enjoying the people, the roads and the green scenery, not so much the rain!
We continue south avoiding taking the M1 road, instead, we take secondary roads, which are muddy and sometimes challenging.
We stop in Mzuzu to eat Schnitzel, amazing, it tasted like heaven! After doing some groceries, which again we're interrupted by the rain, we continue towards Nkhata Bay. This is one of the most beautiful areas of the lake and we decide to stay at Mayoka Camp as we can use the kayaks for free.
After kayaking in the Malawi lake we move on to a new spot. it will take a bit of time until we find some access to the lake, and in the meantime we would struggle with diesel shortages and cholera outbreaks in the region.
We are blessed with a beautiful place to camp at Lake Malawi, but the weather turns bad once again and we get some really bad storms and lots and lots of rain, which forces us to repair many of the cracks in the car, before damaging it even more.
This is Malawi in the wet season.

Amboseli National Park in Southern Kenya, right on the border of Tanzania, with it’s hulking mass of Kilimanjaro peering over the border, is quite possibly our favorite park in East Africa.
This may sound crazy, but compared to all the better known rockstar parks like Ngorogoro, Serengeti and Maasai Mara, we actually rated Amboseli higher.
Rich wildlife and game viewing, the ring and yang of dry dusty planes and then emerald green swamps and lakes, flamingos feeding alongside wildebeest, more Elephant than you can shake a stick at, including the biggest Tuskers we have seen make it very special.
THEN, add in the predator sightings, including Melanistic Serval, and the ever present Kilimanjaro towering up out of the plains……we could go on and on.
If you go to one park in your life, go to Amboseli.

Solo BackPacking in Malawi Part 2 - MV ILALA FERRY TALES
I had read stories about the MV ILALA “cruise” online since travelers who have been to Malawi recommend this experience. One look at this Motor Ship gave me serious titanic vibes. Seriously, it’s been has been in operation since the 50’s do not blame a sister.
The MV ILALA is the most important means of transport for Malawians that live along Lake Malawi. She sails every once a week from Monkey bay that is the south part of lake to Nkhata bay the north then sails back. This is a total of 6 or 7 days for a return trip. On this trip, you will see Malawians, business men and women and even fishermen loading and unloading their goods that are of course their source of income.
While the MV ILALA tested my patience in every way possible (honestly that ship took the meaning of slow to another level. It took me THREE nights to get to Monkey bay). I value the experience. It exposed me to a side of Malawi that I did not know of and the memories will stay with me forever.

Cape Maclear, Malawi (Why this is Malawi’s most visited destination)
Cape Maclear is Malawi's most visit area and for good reasons. Cape Maclear is located on the southern coast of Lake Malawi. This gorgeous lake is home to over 600 species of Cichlids.
This beach town gives off a much different vibe than any other beach I have ever visited. It is surrounded by a village and although it is a popular tourist destination, it really isnt over crowded with tourists. There is a good mix of visitors and locals. You'll find various lodges along the lake, as well as bars, restaurants and gift shops.
You can also take a boat out and swim with the Cichlids followed by a lunch prepared by locals on Thumbi Island.
Cape Maclear to this day is on my top 3 travel destinations!

Ep 08 Go Africa Go - Malawi
We left South Luangwa National Park of Zambia in another early morning start, and endured a near 3 hour border crossing wait...for our on-the-spot visa. As it turned out, those who took the trouble to go through the not-so-easy route of getting a visa to enter Malawi, did not enjoy any advantage over us who don't. Don't ask me...
Not many of us were too keen to swim in the otherwise beautiful beach by Lake Malawi, due to the risk of picking up some some parasites that could be quite hard to rid of, not to mention the sickness that comes with it...
The village kids were a joy to play with, whilst we learnt about their daily livings, the raised cages that keep the chickens at night, their cassava ( a plant root ) that is their staple, the water supply, and the local brick making enterprise. However vegetables selections are pretty limited in the market. But the dresses of the ladies are both colourful and beautiful.
We visited two locations by Lake Malawi, Kande Beach and Chitimba beach. The locals are always friendly and inquisitive about our lives, and of course, the kids were curious about how we painted our skins !!
