8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

Cuba SUCKS, I'm Leaving. (why it's the worst country i've ever visited) ????????

???? TRINIDAD, CUBA (1.9)
This video tells a story, so make a hot drink, turn your phone horizontal and get comfortable. Come with me as I explore Trinidad and chat to the locals about life on the island to find out what Cubans are protesting about? What's it like to live on the island? What basic amenities are available to the population? What's Cuba like? and more. #FREECUBA

I start off buying a sombrero from a couple that have never left Trinidad and explain their difficulties in buying materials for their business. I then head to the local store to show the limited stock they have and how it's impossible for locals to buy anything because the stores don't accept the national currency. Ridiculous I know. After drinking a Cancanchara we get a bicycle taxi to the housing projects where tourists don't go to show a different side to Trinidad. We ascend a roof through a tiny hole and get shown photos of La Trova when the island was a popular tourist destination.

My name is Ed and I sold my house, quit my job as a Rich Media Editor with Gracenote back in the USA and moved to Uvita Costa Rica in April of 2021, in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic. Moving to a new country by yourself can be an intimidating endeavor, but with the right mindset and a little luck, life has been very good for me here. I love the weather here, the nature is absolutely amazing, the beaches and the mountains are fantastic, I even have monkeys in my back yard.

I am learning more each day about life in Costa Rica. I have found and lost love here, made great life long friends both Tico aka Costarican and Gringo aka expat. My mission is to create quality videos about Costa Rica, the people that live here, the beauty of it all and guides to spotlight some of the wonderful things here from tourist attractions to local businesses.
You will find episodes here about making the adjustment to moving to Costa Rica, learning Spanish, going to farmer’s market, driving in Costa Rica, guides to the beaches including Parque Nacional Marino Ballena aka the whale tail, guides to tourist destinations, how to spot monkeys, making a border run to Panama, using an ATM in Costa Rica, Costa Rican money vs USD and Euro, drone video, buying a car and having car repairs done, we go on some road trips and just the day to day life in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Story does an informal livestream on Thursdays, be sure to check that out.

One year living in Costa Rica

I feel the need to clarify something. I have been getting an increasing number of questions from people wanting advice about money matters, insurance and residency. I am not the person you should be asking about these topics, there are others far more qualified on these important subjects. The fact is, I am not a great example of how to move to Costa Rica, I am still trying to figure a lot of things out myself. I am far from making it here, I have much work to do before that is my reality.

My life here is not typical, certainly not perfect and I still have many puzzle pieces to put together in relation to my existence here, though I am certainly happy I made the move. My journey here has not been particularly well thought out and I fly by the seat of my pants much of the time, but that is how I tend to roll. I am not a good example to follow from that standpoint.

While I do share much of my life on this channel, I do maintain a certain degree of privacy, so please don’t expect me to share everything here. I choose what I want to share and am not as much of an open book as many other YouTube people tend to be. But make no mistake, I absolutely love comments and conversations we have on the videos and community page and I learn a lot from our growing Costa Rica Story Community.

I know many viewers of this channel are also planning on making the move to Costa Rica and have questions about what it takes to survive financially here, residency, health Insurance etc. These are things I am still working on myself, and for obvious reasons and some perhaps not so obvious reasons I won't be talking much about that part of my life at the moment. For these specific topics and more I would refer you to my friend Sarah Elena, who helped me a great deal when I made my move.
