Armenia is one of the worlds oldest countries, although its size and shape has fluctuated over the years, its influence is felt around the world. It was the first country to adopt Christianity and its mountainous landscape is dotted with ancient churches and monasteries. Its small size and stunning countryside lends itself to the perfect road trip country. I rented a car for a few days to draw a big circle through the center of the country, trying to see some of the main historic sites that have shaped this legendary region. My first day started right as I landed in Yerevan with an epic view of Armenia’s beloved Mount Ararat, and here’s how it went…

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and is a city that is twenty nine years older than Rome. In 408 A.D., the Armenian alphabet was created with thirty six letters and thus began a new era of history, culture and the spiritual world of the Armenian people. On the basis of these first manuscripts and subsequent translations, Armenia’s first library was founded in the fifth century. Old Yerevan contains traditional buildings with wonderful entrances and carved wooden adornments that continue into the actual living areas. The facades of multi-coloured decorative stone are quite fascinating. Oriental design reveals the original influence. On the western hill above the city is the Memorial Of The Genocide Of The Armenian People. New gravestones commemorate the victims of the conflict on Karabach Mountain. Arranged in a circle, basalt steles protect a flickering eternal flame like a closing hand from distant times. In the eyes of the Turks, the Christian Armenians posed a major threat. Taverns often feature singing, dancing and good food. Armenian music is very varied, often sounds oriental, and literally invites one to dance! The folk dances are quite acrobatic and dancers almost fall into a state of ecstasy due to the constant pulse of the music. Today Yerevan is a vibrant city that has become a booming metropolis in the South Caucasus and is one of the oldest cities in the world, a living reminder of the ancient Orient!

In November 2022, I travelled to the Caucasus region for 7 weeks. I started my travels by backpacking through Azerbaijan for 3 weeks before crossing the border into Georgia on foot. Having travelled around Georgia for 2 weeks in a 4x4 with my husband, he left to fly home and I continued on. The final leg of my journey started with an overnight train to Yerevan for around $45, and I planned to spend 10 days in Armenia to try to get a glimpse of this ancient country.

Brage, my son, and I backpacked around The Caucasus in the end of May 2018. Here we are exploring the capital of Armenia, Yerevan. We also did a day trip to Yell Extreme Park, so Brage could try out Ziplining ✌️

Just to share that I did travel here because I have to exit #UAE to renew my #Visa So what people usually do it that they travel and wait for the release of their Visa in UAE and that's what I did. So Armenia was so beautiful but what I liked the most was the people. They are very welcoming and helpful. Try to visit and enjoy Armenia.
