Newfoundland Circle - Part 1

Jayne and I had always considered Newfoundland one of our ultimate sailing destinations, with careful planning and preparation, our goal seemed not easy but within our ability. We would have to give up idyllic weekends spent enjoying the sun, winds and anchorages of Eastern Lake Ontario, at our home port of Picton and the Prince Edward Cruising Club, what lies beyond the blue horizon intrigued us more.

We decided to set out for the west coast of Newfoundland, on the first leg of what would be a multi season journey. Easy down river sailing to start, we could re-visit part of the familiar route we sailed during Down East Circle. The St. Lawrence River & Seaway to Montreal, Quebec City and then on to explore the Saguenay's fiord.

After investigating the Saguenay we would cross to Rimouski, and make our way east to Matane, and St Anne Des Monts, on the south shore of the St Lawrence.

At St. Ann Des Monts we would cross the river to the port of Sept Isles, on the St Lawrence's much less traveled and remote North Shore. From Sept Isles we would sail east along Quebec's rugged and beautiful Côte-Nord-Duplessis region, to the fantastic Mingan Archipelago, and it's lovely Acadian port of Havre St Pierre.

Each stop further east on Cote Nord would take us to smaller ports, less traveled but no less interesting, Baie Johan Beetz, Natashquan, and then a 175 mile overnight crossing, of the Esquiman Channel, to Bay Of Islands, on Newfoundlands west coast. We would haul-out and over winter our Niagara 35 sloop Phantasia, outside Corner Brook, with the friendly assistance at the Bay of Islands Yacht Club.

We planned to take about 60 days to complete this 12 to 1400 miles of sailing, during the high summer months of July and August.

2014-03 Provisioning for Cruising

Provisioning for several months of cruising can take several days. You have to take inventory of what you have, create meal plans and shopping lists, and visit several different kinds of stores to get everything you need. Then you have to unpack and store everything and be sure you can find what you want when you want it.

This video shows part of the process which included 3 trips to Costco, 2 to Walmart, 1 to a specialty meat store, and many hours of storing and inventorying. But at least we will eat well for the next few months!

2014 07 Cruising Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador with Shear Madness and Adventure

We met up with the Nordhavn 55 Adventure and our friends Brad and Lorraine in Little Harbor, Cape Breton, where we hid from Hurricane Arthur. We then cruised together up the Cape Breton Peninsula and on to Newfoundland's Bay of Islands and Bonne Bay before heading in different directions. Adventure went on to circumnavigate Newfoundland while we met up the the N68 Migration to head to Labrador and Greenland.

2014 07 Shear Madness - Labrador Hike

Our first stop in Labrador was a beautiful anchorage called Pitt's Harbour. After doing some exploring in our tender we decided to go for a hike. There is nothing nearby - no houses, no roads, no people, and no hiking trails. We took a variety of safety tools, including bear repellent - and set out to reach a nearby summit. Aside from the ever-present bugs, this was a great hike and typical of those we enjoyed in Labrador.

This is a photo slideshow of Shear Madness in Labrador and Greenland. Beautiful scenery, lots of ice, and some fog. Every day was, indeed a Beautiful Day.

2014 08 Polar Bears - Cruising with Shear Madness

One of the things we wanted to see during our summer of cruising in Labrador and Greenland was polar bears. We did not see any bears on our trip north along the Labrador coast to the Torngat National Park or any during our stay in Greenland. But when we crossed the Davis Strait to Baffin Island we saw the first of our 18 polar bears! We saw them on land and on water, at a distance and pretty close.

Labrador Summer 2014

Our cruising partner in Labrador and Greenland began the journey with a quad-copter drone which he could launch and retrieve from his boat. This one of our iceberg encounters in Labrador!

2014 08 Iceberg Encounters with Shear Madness and Migration

While cruising in Labrador and Greenland along with our friends on the Nordhavn 68 Migration, we encountered plenty of icebergs. In this video, we visit some up close in the big boats, position ourselves for some photos, and get even closer in the tender - with Captain Gulliver along!

2015 06 Shear Madness Guests Come Cruising

We welcomed some guests aboard to give them a taste of the cruising life. They were able to experience snorkeling, offshore passages, getting ashore by tender, loading and offloading the tender, anchoring, paddle boarding, visiting other boats, and much more!

ABOUT THE FILM
In February of 2007, Amy and Ken set out for a year-long cruise up to Canada and then back down the coast to the Bahamas. Along the way they encountered assorted equipment failures, made new friends, visited many interesting places, improved their navigational skills, and made this movie. Follow the intrepid crew of the Mary T as they set out to see the east coast of North America. Meet a lobsterman in Maine. Come along for a ride on a Friendship Sloop. See the spectacular sights of Nova Scotia and the Halifax International Busker Festival. Then head south exploring the ICW and arrive in the emerald waters of the Bahamas. With tongue in cheek, maritime journalist Susie Chatham guides you on this journey of discovery.

A cinema-nautical tour de farce, anchored by the irrepressible Susie Chatham. One can only hope for more of such far reaching and insightful commentary on the lives of others from this gifted bespeckled commentarian.
—Dave Insley cinematographer of such lofty cinema as John Waters' Polyester, Hairspray and Crybaby

Waterfalls and Nor Easters in Newfoundland #sailing #remoteanchorage #growinguponaboat Ep24

We anchor in White Bear Bay, a natural fjord that is jaw droopingly beautiful. After removing about 500 lbs of kelp from our anchor we make our way onto Ramea.
A North Easter sends us back to Newfoundland on our first crossing attempt.

About us: We are a family of four who have been living on our boat for the past 2+ years with our two boys and our newest addition, a Havanese pup named Ruby.

We worked hard in our 20's and 30's and built a company that has an amazing team managing it and allows us to work remotely and take time to enjoy this time with our fmaily.

We love adeventure, sports and an active lifestyle but also take pleasure in a great meal or a sunset gin and tonic. Boat life is challanging and busy but we have been learning as we go and have a great appreciation for the sailing community and the willingness of others to teach and share skills.

After two seasons in the Caribben we're hoping to Hangtime through the Panama Canal and onto New Zealand in 2021.
