20 Tips & Hacks for Delayed & Cancelled Flights

Tips for what to do when your flight is delayed or cancelled. The reason for the delay matters. It the delay is the airline’s fault you will be entitled to lots of assistance from the airline. If the delay is due to weather, then you are on your own. This is part of my Travel Advice Series. For more travel advice on how to get the most bang for your buck, including how to get good deals on flights and rental cars, check out the rest of the series here:

1. Pay attention for delays. Check the status before you leave for the airport. Check again when you get to the airport. Sign-up for “notifications” from the airline. Install their mobile app. The app often sends notifications before the announcements are made in the airport. And finding out early can be key!
Anticipate the issue, check the weather,.. and don't book crazy tight connections.. unless you are OK misconnecting.
HACK: check the flight status of the incoming plane
2. Don't panic… But do act quickly. Be flexible. Be polite.
NOTE: This will all be much easier if you are carry-on only
3. You might have been rebooked automatically. Check your text messages, email, mobile app.
4 Know your other options. Other flights, other airports, other connections, other airlines
NOTE: I usually research these before hand so I’m “ready” and can act quick if need be.
ONT to LAX story.
Google Flights, Sky Scanner, and Kayak are all good tools to research alternates.
5. Pay attention to the reason for the delay. If it's the airlines fault then ask for compensation. Meal vouchers, hotels, transportation to another airport. But you often DO HAVE TO ASK. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK “Am I entitled to any compensation?”
If the delay is weather… many airlines let you proactively change your flights ahead of time. Take advantage of this.
6. Don’t be a sheep
7. Call the airline -- You can do this while you are on the plane.
REMINDER: BE NICE! Be polite and respectful to those trying to assist you
HACK: If the US call centers have long hold times, try an international number.
8. Go to the airline Lounge
9. Customer Service airside
10. Ticket counters landside
11. Go standby at the gate of the other flight you want to get on
12. Sometimes even another gate agent at a different gate
13. Will the delay be so great that you have no reason to go anymore? Ask for a refund, or even a refund and a return flight if at a connection point. Don’t accept a credit if you really want a refund.
14. Nothing available on the original carrier… ask for them to put you on a different airline.
15. Can’t get anything out of the airline? Research how much new tickets cost on a different airline.
16. Was the delay really long? Contact the airlines customer service to Express your displeasure.
17. Know the rules
18. Use your credit card benefits or travel insurance
19. Find a good place in the airport to pass the time

How To Get Cheap Flights! 10 Tips and Tricks

Finding affordable flights can be a frustrating to say the least. But fear not! We've put together a list of tips to help you find the cheapest way to get to where you're going!

1. Incognito
We'll start with the classic, well-known tip, which is to browse for flights in incognito mode or delete your cache and cookies after browsing. This is because many sites will track your history, and if you're flagged as being interested in a certain flight, airlines have been known to suddenly up the price.

2. Accidents Happen
We all make mistakes, we're human! Even airlines make mistakes and sometimes list flights at crazy low-prices. You can sometimes catch one of these rare mishaps by using an online service like AirfareWatchdog and grab the flight before they correct it.
Just put in your desired route and they'll email you when there's a cheap flight available.

3. Late Night Search
Many honed travelers swear by late night flight bargains. If you search for cheap flights at an unusual hour when the majority of your country is sleeping, you may stumble across a crazy bargain that all the other hunters miss!

4. Alerts
Apps like Hopper can predict flight prices up to a year in advance. So if you tell Hopper where you want to go, it'll tell you what days of the year generally have the cheapest flights, so you can book accordingly.

5. Shop Around
There are plenty of cheap flight finding websites out there, like Expedia or Google Flights, but to make sure you're getting the best flight for your buck, cross-check similar flight destinations on different sites, just in case.

6. Fly Somewhere New
This is for people who have a fixed vacation date, and a fixed budget, but aren't anchored to any specific destination. On SkyScanner.net, you can compare cheap flights, hotels and car hire, just select your departure airport, and it lists all travel destinations around the world according to price.

7. Consider Public Transport
A direct flight to your destination can be a lot more expensive than flying to the nearest city and then hopping on a train for a few hours. Sometimes it's preferable to cut short an 18 hour flight, stretch your legs and sit on a train instead. Some trains even have beds...

8. Check the Small Print
Some airlines look like they're offering you a cheap flight, but when you go to purchase, fees are quickly added. From ambiguous Airline Fees to even charging for the online meal. It often costs extra to travel with a suitcase, but some airlines will even charge you for a carry-on.

9. Air-Miles
Some credit card companies offer no annual fee air-miles. So for example every time you spend 10 dollars you could earn 1 free air-mile. This is usually a special credit card you have to apply for, but check with your credit card company, just in case, you could be racking up air-miles and not even know it!

How to Get CHEAPER FLIGHTS Using Long Layovers ✈️???? | Solo Travel Tips

There's nothing quite better than finding a cheap flight for an upcoming trip. One of the best ways to find cheap flights is to leverage long layovers (Stopovers).
Stopovers are basically a long layover, more than 24 hours. Today I will teach you how to find flights with long layovers to save money.

You may be thinking 'why would I want a long layover?'
Well, when you have a layover for 3 days (for example), you are able to go out of the airport and visit all kinds of fun tourist attractions in the local area. Often, these stopovers aren't more expensive than the original direct flight - or, they can even be cheaper than a direct flight!

This allows you to explore an entirely new country for a fraction of the price! Imagine buying a plane ticket from your local airport to the country of your layover. The price would probably be expensive!

Taking advantage of these long layover flight hack will allow you to travel to more places for a much cheaper price.
Happy travels!
