This is my ultimate Hong Kong travel guide including 30 things to do, secrets, best foods to eat and best places to visit which I carefully selected, like Michelin star Dim Sum at Tim Ho Wan, Hing Kee clay-pot rice dises, secret Lugard Street, Lan Fong Yuen Hong Kong tea, Yum Cha, Roasted Pigeon, Yik Cheong Building, Symphony of Lights and the vibrant Hong Kong Nightlife at LKF. Hong Kong may appear to be massive when you look at photos of its skyline but trust me it is conveniently packed and can be easily explored within 2 days. I recommend you start Hong Kong at the Victoria Peak which offers amazing views of the Hong Kong island skyline, but avoid paying $7 USD for the Skyterrace, instead take a 15-minute hike on the secret Lugard Road which leads to the best view of Hong Kong.

($12 USD, 10% discount)

Great attractions on Hong Kong island are the Yik Cheong building at Quarry Bay, easily reachable by subway and Oddies, Hong Kong style egg-waffles in the Central district.

Other typical places to visit are Lan Fong Yuen, for their special Hong Kong tea ($3 USD), filtered to actual stockings, leaving no residue. Also try their buns seared with condensed milk.

The most bizarre dish I must have eaten was the wild pigeon at Kwan Yu Roasted Meats in Causeway Bay, an entire roasted pigeon for $6 USD with a cup of extremely strong tea. A meal for champions to say the least.

For a more delightful dinner, venture out to Yung Kee Restaurant for their Signature Charcoal Roasted Goose for $35 USD. Crispy goose skin covered juicy goose meat, a true local delicacy.

Hong Kong also offers very fun restaurants and great for food photography, especially Yum Cha, for their cute dim sum steamer baskets containing piggy pork buns, pineapple bird cakes in a cage and funky molten custard buns. Make sure to poke a hole for the hot custard to ooze out of its mouth. I even ran into a few Reformatt subscribers from Japan and Hong Kong who were also dining at the same restaurant.

Find the most fun attractions in Hong Kong:

Find the cheapest hotels in Hong Kong:

Another bizarre restaurant is Hoi Tin Tong where you can try out the local turtle jelly which apparently cures you from a hangover. Although pricey, at $15 USD you may expect a lot, but it is very blend until you pour some honey into the mix. Their best treat is the almond pudding, this was beyond delicious for just $2 USD.

The BEST Hong Kong dim sum can be experience at Michelin-star restaurant Tim Ho Wan, for extremely cheap prices, Shumai at $4 USD, Har Gow at $4 USD and BBQ pork buns at $3 USD, basically $1 USD per item. Absolutely ridiculously cheap for Michelin rated food. Arrive before 5pm to avoid any line-ups.

In conclusion, I have to say that Hong Kong is one of the coolest cities I've ever been to, but you must remember, Hong Kong is a pure business city, the locals can be very rushed and occupied. Hong Kong never really focused on being a hardcore tourist destination so keep that in mind. This itinerary is ideal for 2 days in Hong Kong, everything is within proximity, so you won't spent too much time travelling around.

The Islands of Hong Kong

The Outlying Islands of Hong Kong:
When people think of Hong Kong, they usually think of the city center in Central, the busy markets in Mong Kok, but there is much more to this city than the towering skyscrapers. Hong Kong is made up of over 250 Islands, with some more populated than others. Once you step onto these Outlying Islands, it will feel like a completely new world. When the pandemic hit, it was difficult to leave Hong Kong, but luckily I got to spend my weekends exploring these outer islands to escape the busy city life. #hongkong #outlyingislands #hongkongtravel

Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic cities in all of Asia. From a travel perspective it offers numerous diverse options worth exploring. Whether one is exploring Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Victoria Harbor or the New Territories, there are plenty of attractions to cover.

The following is a list of the top things to do in Hong Kong:

1) Avenue of Stars at Night in Kowloon (星光大道)

Wandering around Avenue of Stars at night is the perfect way to experience Hong Kong in the evening. Overlooking Victoria Harbour, this area has been modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame championing all of the celebrities involved in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. None is more famous than the Bruce Lee statue. This is also the perfect place to watch A Symphony of Lights laser show which happens daily at 8 pm.

2) Afternoon High Tea at the Peninsula

Sitting down for afternoon tea at the Peninsula is one of the more posh activities in Hong Kong. Expect to wait in line (we waited over 2 hours) for a table. You can get complete sets which include assorted finger food along with a drink. This is definitely not a budget activity.

3) Views of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak and Tram Ride (太平山)

Taking a tram ride up to Victoria Peak to experience the best vantage point of Hong Kong, Kowloon and Victoria Harbor is one of the top attractions in the city. Many come at night; however, we recommend coming in the afternoon on a weekday when you can enjoy having more personal space.

4) Star Ferry boat ride (天星小輪)

There are many different modes of transportation in Hong Kong; however, none are quite as authentic of an experience as taking Star Ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon or vice versa. It's one of the cheapest ways to get around.

5) Junk Boat Ride

Taking a Junk boat ride around Victoria harbor offers some of the best views of the city. It's especially popular at night to take in A Symphony of Lights performance.

6) Hong Kong Park and Tea Appreciation Ceremony (香港公園)

To get away from all of the hustle and bustle check out Hong Kong Park for a tranquil escape. If you have time participate in a Chinese tea appreciation ceremony.

7) Sampan Boat Tour in Aberdeen (舢舨)

Taking a ride on a traditional Sampan boat allows you to experience what life is like for Chinese fishermen.

8) Eating Dim Sum (點心 - 点心)

One should not leave Hong Kong without first trying dim sum. These small sized bites are treats that are accompanied by a pot of Chinese tea.

9) Taking a night bus tour of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon

Taking a night bus tour allows you to visit distinct areas in both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon such as Mong Kok and Causeway Bay.

Hong Kong Travel Tips | How Expensive Is Hong Kong?

How expensive is Hong Kong? In our Hong Kong travel tips guide we cover arriving from the airport, accommodations, local transportation and free attractions in the city. We explore what to see and do and local must eats including what we loved about Hong Kong along with what we hated about Hong Kong. Now let's explore the cost of travel in Hong Kong in depth!

Official Exchange Rate = $1 USD = 7.78 Hong Kong Dollars (current as of January, 2017)
Check out our 25 things to do in Hong Kong travel guide video =

Arriving from the International Airport in Hong Kong

1) Airport Express train ride ($90 to $100 HKD = approximately $11 to $13 USD)
2) Cityflyer bus ($10 to $50 HKD = approximately $5 to $6 USD)

Areas to consider staying include Kowloon (Mong Kong or Tsim Sha Tsui. The cheapest and most infamous option is the Chungking Mansions.) Or consider Hong Kong Island (Causeway Bay is a popular shopping and entertainment district)

Local Transportation around Hong Kong

1) Hong MTR (Mass transit railway aka the metro subway)
2) Hong Kong Tramways double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island
3) The Peak Tram to visit Victoria Peak
4) The Star Ferry (cross from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon or vice versa)

Be sure to get an Octopus Card (八達通) which is allows you to pay for all forms of transportation in Hong Kong (aside from taxis) along with some museums, convenience stores and restaurants.

Hong Kong Free Attractions (Free things to do in Hong Kong)

1) A Symphony of Lights

Things to do in Hong Kong (Hong Kong must see)

1) Peak tram ride for incredible views of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak.

A return ticket costs HK $45 ($6 USD) for an adult and a return ticket with sky terrace admission HK $88. We personally enjoyed the free views.

What to eat in Hong Kong (Hong Kong eats)

1) Dim Sum (點心) - try Tim Ho Wan and local dim sum joints)
2) Siu Mei (燒味) and Char Siu (叉燒) - roasted meat on top of rice
3) Congee (粥) - porridge for breakfast or anytime of day
4) Hong Kong Egg Tarts and other baked goods
5) Afternoon tea at the Peninsula or a cheaper alternative (Lion Rock)

Budget meals in Hong Kong can be had for roughly $3 to $10 in USD per person and fine dining get really expensive.

Afternoon tea can range between $30 to $50 per person in USD.

Things we LOVED about Hong Kong (I love Hong Kong)

1) Most things to do and attractions in Hong Kong are FREE!
2) Dim sum is amazing and also affordable
3) Incredible transportation options (metro, star ferry, tram, etc)
4) Incredible skyline by day or night from various vantage points
5) Dynamic city with a pulse and hustle & bustle unlike any other
6) Easy to escape the city centre and get out in nature

Things we HATED about Hong Kong (I hate Hong Kong)

1) The crazy crowds and population density can really wear you down at times.
2) Worst value accommodations we've experienced in Asia in terms of what you get for the amount of money spent.
3) Nightlife and fine dining can get really expensive

Final Thoughts

Hong Kong is probably the most dynamic city we've ever visited. It is a must visit city and we highly recommend you go at least once your lifetime. We hope to return again soon.

Complete Guide to Hong Kong Trip. Bonus tips in the description. #hongkong #triptohongkong

MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE PLANNING A TRIP TO HONGKONG
*Last two (not in the video) are the bonus tips.
Save for later

1. Return flight cost (total to and fro): INR 25 K Per person.
2. Visa : Visa free entry for Indians. But you need to fill a Pre Arrival Registration form (type Pre Arrival Registration form Hong Kong on Google) and take it along. Fill it correctly. We missed a minor detail and had to refill it at the Delhi Airport while checkin. Comment ‘PAR’ if you want a link.
3. Best time to visit Hongkong : March to may and Sept. to Nov. We visited in the last week of November. The weather was cold (19-20 C) during this time.
December January is also a good time to visit weather wise but it is high tourist season in Hong Kong.
4. Hongkong currency : Hongkong Dollar (HKD). 1HKD = 10.67 INR
5. How to get around in Hong Kong – Use their local buses and metro (MTR). Taxis are very costly.
6. Octopus card : Get a octopus card from the Airport itself or any 7-Eleven store. We got it from Klook App. It cost us INR 1200 (out of which INR 500 was credited in the card). You can use it at restaurants, public transport, shopping. You can recharge it at any 7-Eleven Store.
7. Itinerary : Include Disneyland, Cable Car to Big Buddha Buddha, Peak Tram, Stay in a Caravan and also visit Macau. Stay tuned for Hongkong’s detailed itinerary.
8. Stays : Hong Kong being one of the most expensive places in the world, the stays here are expensive. Book well in advance. During our trip, we tried different stays for different budgets. Stay tuned for this reel too.
9. Language : Mostly people know English.

Bonus tips :
10. Vegetarian food : There are some nice vegetarian food options in Hongkong. As per our experience, they don’t understand ‘vegan’ or ‘vegetarain’. Instead tell them for ‘no meat’. Stay tuned for amazing vegetarian food options in Hong Kong.
11.Activities : Before buying a ticket for anything (Disneyland, Peak Tram etc) check the price on Klook. Most of the time, you will get a better deal.
