15 Travel Mistakes ONLY ROOKIES MAKE!
Don't make these rookie mistakes on your next holiday! ^^
1. Not researching transport
Always pre-plan how you intend to get from the airport to your accommodation. Most Taxis add an additional charge for airport shuttling and sometimes you could be paying a taxi $25 when a public bus would cost you $1.50!
2. Tipping
Even though in the US you tip for almost everything, this is not so in other countries. whereas in the US you tip to supplement the server's low paycheck, in the majority of other countries you only tip if the service was especially friendly or high quality.
3. Not having a watch
Ok so you've got a clock on your phone, but you don't want to be getting your phone out all the time, sometimes you've got too much stuff in your hands, other times you're in an area where you don't really want to be flashing it around. Buy a cheap reliable watch, you'll be grateful for it in the long run
4. Not trying the local cuisine.
If you travel to a foreign country and order a Big Mac you deserve a slap! Taste the local cuisine! Be adventurous! It'll broaden your palette and your horizons, and quite possibly make you realize just how shitty a Big Mac really is!
5. Packing the wrong shoes
Think about where you're going and what you're going to be doing before you pack your shoes, and always, always, always put comfort as a priority.
6. Don't overpack your suitcase!
Don't pack dress shoes or heels if you only plan to use them once, a pair of casual sneakers or sandals work just as well and weigh less. If you're going to a tropical paradise, you won't need 3 sweatshirts, so research the climate of the places you are going to travel and pack accordingly.
7. Don't overpack your days!
You're on holiday! relax! you may want to see all the sights, but planning too much for one day can't leave you tired out and stressed. It's better to fully enjoy seeing 5 sights than to stress and rush through 8.
8. Forgetting about your laundry
If you are travelling for an extended period of time, remember to research where you intend to do your laundry. Some hotels and hostels don't have laundry facilities so be sure to plan where you intend to wash your clothes and allow time for doing it in your schedule! Trust me, when you're travelling there's nothing worst than crusty undies
9. Forgetting your Charger
Don't leave your charger plugged into the wall when you aren't charging your phone, always put it back in your pack and take it out every time you need it. Get into this habit and you'll never forget your phone charger again.
10. Forgetting to tell your bank.
Remember to tell your bank that you are going abroad and share your itinerary with them, this way they won't think it's odd when someone in Bali starts using your card, and therefore they won't block it, and trust me, there's only one thing worse than having no money and a blocked card when travelling, and that is having a blocked card and not having a data plan on your phone to be able to sort it out.
11. Not having a data plan
Don't forget to organize a Data plan! when travelling, Data is king! you need it for navigation, communication, booking tickets, confirming or changing flights, and.... unblocking credit cards, so make sure you get a roaming plan or buy a sim card or just research possible Wifi areas at your location.
12. Changing Money.
Don't change money at the Airport! the best thing to do is to change a small amount of money at your bank before you leave and then use ATM's once you are abroad. The Majority of ATM's offer better rates and lower fees than anywhere else so if you can, use an ATM. Also, be sure to research ATM's in your area and choose trustworthy and reliable ones.
13. Getting overcharged for food.
Don't eat at restaurants that are close to a tourist site or close to the beach. These restaurants are in a prime location, their rent is more expensive and so..... they charge more! sometimes if you move just one street further away you'll find cheaper local restaurants that will not only save you money but will also offer a more authentic local cuisine.
14. Don't plan something for every day!
You may think that you need to plan something for every day to really enjoy your holiday, but you don't. Tourism is tiring! walking, travelling, hiking, and sightseeing will take it out of you, so allow for some downtime when you can relax and recharge your batteries, you'll be grateful for this later on.
15. Carrying too much money.
Don't carry around huge amounts of money, you're setting yourself up for a fall. Research ATM locations in your area and just draw out enough for the day, drawing out smaller amounts will mean the ATM will give you smaller notes, which are easier to use, and if you are unlucky enough to lose your money or get robbed, your losses will be less.

After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.

The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends.
