12 HIDDEN SECRETS in Bryant Park | New York City

Bryant Park is the busiest park in the world, but few visitors know about the trap door, the secret escape hatch from an underground room, or the ruins from the 1800's. Here's a list of my top 12 secrets of Bryant Park.

If you're interested in taking a free tour of Bryant Park and learning even more, I highly recommend it:

Also, the free movie I referred to in the library at 4:24 talks a lot about the history of the park, the old reservoir, and the library. It's really interesting.

If you liked this video, be sure to check out my 12 hidden secrets in New York playlist, with secrets from Times Square and Central Park:

12 Secrets in Bryant Park:
1: It used to be a cemetery
2. The New York Public Library Stacks are directly below the park lawn and contain 37 miles of bookshelves. Check out Gothamist's video about the stacks here:
3. Escape hatch from the stacks
4. The trap door by the carousel
5. Every activity and event is free
6. Free Wifi throughout the park
7. Power outlets are all over the place
8. Free, clean, amazing public restroom, consistently rated one of the best bathrooms in New York
9. The change thrown into the fountain adds up to about $4000 per year
10. London Plane trees were Robert Moses' favorite tree (he basically created the NYC Parks Department) and so he made the leaf of the London Plane tree into the logo for the parks department
11. Croton Reservoir foundation ruins
12. Rose Reading Room

12 HIDDEN SECRETS in Times Square | New York City

Times Square is one of the busiest and most visited places on earth, but there are still a bunch of secrets that most people don't know. Want to do even more in Times Square? Here you go:

I'll show you where (and when) to look to find 12 hidden secrets in Times Square, like a theatre being lifted 30 feet off the ground, a touch of 1920s Broadway glamour that is still on display, and how to see the Times Square New Year's Eve ball up close.

If you liked this tour of Times Square, be sure to check out my 12 Hidden Secrets in New York playlist, with secrets in Central Park and Bryant Park:

The secrets in this video are loosely organized by geography. In this little walking tour of Times Square, if you want to call it that, I start at the top (47th Street, at the red stairs above TKTS) and work my way down to 42nd Street.

Timestamps for the 12 Secrets:
0:00 - Welcome to Times Square
0:32 - 1. TKTS isn't in Times Square
1:09 - 2. Times Square Hum
1:59 - 3. Relax at the Marriott
3:22 - 4. Israel Miller Building
3:49 - 5. Midnight Moment
5:30 - 6. Palace Theatre, elevated
6:35 - 7. Times Square 42nd Street subway art
8:38 - 8. Birthplace of the Martini
9:11 - 9. Secret Entrance to the Knickerbocker Bar
9:55 - 10. 42nd Street - Lincoln Highway
10:38 - 11. One Times Square Observation Deck
11:13 - 12. Confetti Wishes
11:26 - How Times Square became Times Square

I intentionally left a few things out so you can go explore Times Square and find them yourself. For example, in the Times Square 42nd Street subway art part of the video, I highlighted art by Toby Buonagurio from the Bronx. She created 35 unique and beautiful depictions of street scenes in New York, but I only showed you where to find half of them. See if you can find all 35. And Nick Cave created the glass and tile mosaic masterpieces. I showed you two of his works, but there's actually a third installation. See if you can find it.

There are also secret bars, old theatres that have turned into souvenir shops, and plenty of random facts (did you know the billboards in Times Square are actually called Spectaculars). If you want more secrets from Times Square or anywhere else in New York City, let me know in the comments.

Also, shout out to the Naked Cowboy, another Times Square staple, who makes a cameo in the video about halfway through. ;)

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us, including starting a travel vlog. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia and to create travel videos along the way.

Due to the pandemic, we changed course and bought a van to convert into a campervan to travel to all 50 National Parks in the lower 48 states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). The roadtrip is now over, and we are moving on to a new adventure: living in the best city in the world, New York City! We got an apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan and we are thrilled to explore our own backyard and bring you guys along with us. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.
