SANTA TERESA, COSTA RICA 20 YEARS LATER! (TRAVEL GUIDE)

It's been 20 years since I have been in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and as I know a lot can change in that amount of time I guess I wasn’t full expecting it to change so much! Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula and is known for its surf and laidback atmosphere. It seems over the past decade the word has gotten out of how beautiful Santa Teresa is and tourists and foreign investors have been flocking here. So in this Costa Rica Travel Vlog we will be showing you around Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, a bit of Mal Pais and up to the Montezuma Waterfalls on ATV. I will also be talking about my experience returning after 20 years and a little of how this development has affected the locals, which is always something you should keep in mind when traveling, supporting the locals.

Is Santa Teresa worth it? | Costa Rica Travel Advice

Santa Teresa is one of the top travel destinations in the world in 2022. But why has it become so popular?

If you are like us, when you think about beach paradise you think about Bali, the Philippines or Sri Lanka. Some of our favorite travel influencers on Instagram went to Santa Teresa in Costa Rica and we had to check it out for ourselves.

Santa Teresa is on a remote peninsula of Costa Rica, getting there generally requires a long shuttle ride and ferry. But its well worth the journey.
We recommend

We used them both and they were great.

What once was a rustic oceanside village is now developing into a bustling town. With restraints, cafes, and great nightlife. Now, we agree that gentrification is often a bad thing, but we believe Santa Teresa is in a sweet spot right now. Developed enough to be comfortable, but not overly developed.

You are not only limited to Santa Teresa, with Monte Zouma just a quick ATV ride away, with amazing waterfalls and hikes to be explored.

We stayed in Griss Corner in Santa Teresa and it was AMAZING. We highly recommend this accommodation.

So why is Santa Teresa so popular? Well, you'll need to watch the video to find out! Enjoy!

Nicaragua Travel Guide | Itinerary, Mistakes & Tips

#Nicaragua #TravelGuide #NicaraguaTravel

After 2 months travelling around Nicaragua and visiting most of the well-known places, I thought it would be useful to produce a travel guide of sorts for Nicaragua.

Places visited: San Juan Del Sur, Popoyo, Playa Colorados, Ometepe, Granada, Managua, Corn Islands and Leon.

If I had to choose two places to visit in Nicaragua they would be Granada and Corn Islands (followed closely by Popoyo and Ometepe). Granada is a lovely town but the real jewel is visiting Laguna de Apoyo and Masaya Volcano which is one hell of a day. Corn Islands is, well, a Caribbean paradise and a place to really relax amongst beautiful surroundings.

If I had to skip two places they would have to be San Juan Del Sur and Leon, although both places are still good to visit if you have the time! The reason for skipping these two are that San Juan Del Sur needs the tourists for attractions like Sunday Funday to work - obviously at the moment there are a limited amount of tourists. Leon is nice but the main tourist attraction is the cathedral which, whilst incredible and the roof makes for incredible pictures, it's a bit out of the way and doesn't offer a whole lot else.

Nicaragua is incredibly diverse which makes it great for travelling - it's also much cheaper than Costa Rica. To give you an idea we spent less than a third on a monthly basis compared to our expenses in Costa Rica.

There are a few things that I think all travellers should be aware of:

1. Internet speeds are on the whole terrible. If you buy a local sim it is far more stable but generally speaking, the wifi isn't reliable enough to work off. As such, if you're a digital nomad or looking to work remotely in Nicaragua I think that you'll struggle....or at least I did.

2. Taxis are really affordable both in cities and between towns. However, for some reason even if you have a map with you they seemingly refuse to use it (even if they don't know where you are staying). This was perplexing and frustrating. Also, always clarify pricing. We got stung a few times because we didn't fully clarify prices or the taxi waited for us when we hadn't asked them to.

3. We had some issues crossing the Nicaraguan border back to Costa Rica because the stamp was barely readable from he Nicaragua border. This is highly unlikely to happen to anyone else, but for us it did mean that the bus left without us at Peñas Blancas.

4. I can't really comment on the political situation in Nicaragua but it is something that people ask about. Do your own research here as I had to previously change travel plans due to unrest.

Is Santa Teresa Worth it? Getting stuck in a Costa Rican surf town

#SantaTeresa #CostaRicaTravel #SantaTeresaSurf

Santa Teresa is a small surf town on the South West point of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.....and it's great. Consistent surf for all levels, good food, sun, it's all there. Here's my guide if you're looking to visit Santa Teresa.

Yes, there are some things that get on your nerves. The dust from the road can get a little annoying. The prices are extortionate (accommodation prices, food and transport) especially compared with the rest of Central America. It's clear that it has become more than just a surf town. Lots of people are working remotely and it was surprising to see high profile figures including world heavyweight champion boxers, social media platform founders and world famous DJs.

Regardless, Santa Teresa is one of my favourite places in Costa Rica. I'm biased because I like to surf, but there are plenty of people that don't surf and still love Santa Teresa. You're certainly not going to have a problem if you're wondering what there is to do in Santa Teresa: aforementioned surf, sun, yoga, tide pools, food, the list goes on.

Having spent a couple of months there now, I started to question whether it was worth getting stuck there (like so many do). The laid back vibe is very similar to the likes of Puerto Escondido in Mexico or Siargao in the Philippines. It's fantastic whilst you're there, but what price do you pay?

The obvious price is the financial one. Santa Teresa is certainly not a cheap place. However, the larger price with these types of places is the lost time. They are lots of fun when you're there and you don't want to leave. The issue is when you do leave and reflect on the time you spent there. What did you do? What does that mean for the rest of your travels?

My last visit was 6 weeks....it was supposed to be 2.

Those extra 4 weeks prevented me from visiting Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula. They stopped me from visiting Monteverde or spending more time in La Fortuna.

I love Santa Teresa and always tell people to go there if they're visiting Costa Rica. My advice though would be to book your next destination (and pay for it) so that you have to leave. You can ALWAYS come back. It has an allure that can suck you in and it's difficult to leave.

If you do find yourself staying for an extended period of time, whether that be in Santa Teresa or in Playa Del Carmen, Playa Hermosa or even Montezuma, that's fine. It happens. It's part of travelling. Enjoy.

In this video, I take a virtual trip through Nicaragua and talk about the 4 places in Nicaragua I'd like to visit.

Would you visit Nicaragua? Where would you go if you visited Nicaragua?

Have you visited Nicaragua? If you have, I'd love to hear about your experience in that country. Do you go solo or was it group travel?

Have you lived in Nicaragua? If you have, what can you tell me about that country.

Lake Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua (Lago de Nicaragua) is a vast freshwater lake in Nicaragua. In fact, it has an area of over 3,000 square miles making it the largest lake in Central America! It’s just a little bit smaller than Lake Titicaca. With a depth of 85 feet) Lake Nicaragua drains into the Caribbean Sea by way of the San Juan River. You can see the Pacific Ocean from the Ometepe Island mountains on the lake.

Ometepe

Ometepe is an island that rises out of Lake Nicaragua. A pretty neat fact is that it was formed by two volcanoes beneath the lake. The name literally comes from from the Nahuatl words ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), together meaning “two mountains”. At a size of about 107 square miles, it’s the largest island in the lake and currently estimates an influx of around 60,000 travelers each year. Reportedly, the best time of the year to visit is between mid-November and mid-May.

Granada

With an estimated population of around 125,000, Granada is Nicaragua’s sixth most populous city. It is also, historically, one of the country’s most important cities both economically and politically. Of possible interest t the traveler is the fact that it has a thriving Indigenous population. The city is also known as La Gran Sultana (The Great Sultana), which reflects Granada’s Moorish and Andalusian appearance.

Managua

Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua. It was founded as a pre-Columbian fishing town and, in 1819, it was incorporated and named “Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua” (Loyal Villa of Santiago de Managua). Managua is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua. The population is estimated at around 1 million and was declared the capital in 1852.
