Top TEN Places CARTAGENA WALLED CITY

Cartagena de Indias is one of the most visited tourist cities in Colombia. It is known as the Walled City or Corralito de Piedra and its historic center is the favorite place for tourists who visit it.

At No. 10, we have the Bóvedas (The Vaults).

Located in the San Diego neighborhood, the Bóvedas were a prison during the Spanish colonial era. Today, they are a set of warehouses where they sell handicrafts, artwork, hammocks, hats, purses, ornaments, clothes, and native products from the Caribbean region of Colombia.

The Bóvedas are open every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

At No. 9, we find the Cartagena Cathedral.

The Cartagena Cathedral is a Catholic Church building constructed in 1577. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cartagena de Indias and one of the oldest episcopal seats on the continent.

Its Spanish Renaissance architecture is worthy of admiration, and I recommend visiting it regardless of your religious or moral inclination because it is an imposing building.

In Cartagena, it is very common for weddings to be held in this type of church. People from all over Colombia and even many parts of the world select the historic center of Cartagena as their place to get married.

At No. 8, we have the Clock Tower.

It is the main entrance to the walled city, meaning it is a must-visit place to enter the historic center.

The clock in the tower has been working since 1874, and in the square, you can find many activities and people gathered at all hours of the day.

Here, you can also find the Portal de los Dulces, where you can enjoy the native sweets of Cartagena. I recommend trying the cocadas, conservas de leche, and panderitos.

Likewise, in this square, you will find the bar Donde Fidel, an iconic place where you can listen to the best salsa music in the world.

In the Top 7, we find Bolivar Square.

Right next to the Cathedral of Cartagena, you'll see Bolivar Square. A park founded in honor of Simon Bolivar, liberator of Colombia and its neighbor countries.

In this park, you'll find an attraction that I highly recommend, which is the Palace of the Inquisition, a museum where you'll learn interesting stories about how witches were punished during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.

in position No. 6, we have the restaurant Donde Magola.

You can't visit the walled city without trying the delights of Cartagena's cuisine.

In the San Diego neighborhood, there's a place that sells the most renowned egg arepas in all of Cartagena. It's called Donde Magola, and the site became famous for a visit by the traveling chef Anthony Bourdain.

In the Top 5, we find Santo Domingo Square.

It's the square where is located Santo Domingo church and it's said that the devil was the one who bent one of its towers, as you can see on the screen.

The square is a place where you can eat outdoors at some restaurants. I recommend that before you sit down, check the ratings of the places on platforms like TripAdvisor or Google Maps.

In the square, you'll also find one of the famous fat women or sculptures by the master Fernando Botero.

In position No. 4, we have the Sanctuary of San Pedro.

San Pedro Claver is considered the patron saint of slaves. This saint was characterized by his humane treatment towards slaves during the time of the Spanish conquest.

The Sanctuary is a building consisting of a church and a museum, which was the house where San Pedro Claver lived. Don't miss entering this museum, as the stories you'll learn there are wonderful.

In the Top 3, we find San Diego Square.

This is my favorite square located in the historic center of Cartagena.

In this square, you will find many restaurants and outdoor bars.

In the No. 2 position, we have the Alquímico Bar.

If you like good cocktails, meeting people from all over the world, and good music, you can't miss this place.

As a fun fact, I'll tell you that this bar is on the list of the 50 best bars in the world.

If you are in Cartagena, don't forget to walk on the walls. It is a relaxing activity, as you can blend in with its magic and the delicious sea breeze.

In the Top 1, we have the La Serrezuela shopping center.

I love shopping malls, and this is my favorite place in all of Cartagena.

It used to be a bullfighting arena, but it was rebuilt some years ago and became an imposing shopping center where you will find top-brand stores.

I have had the fortune of visiting many shopping malls around the world, and this is one of my favorites.

In the mall, you will find a great gastronomic offer, and I tell you that here you can find the iconic restaurant Andrés Carne de Res in Cartagena.

If you come to Cartagena, do not miss this visit under any circumstances.

Notes:
I got here by plane and a Covid vaccine is still required, so make sure you have that before entering Colombia.
The local currency is the Colombian peso, the exchange rate with the US Dollar is currently 4700.
I booked in most of the places I went to, but for the sunset rooftop bars, try getting there at least an hour before sunset to secure a table.
As always , I realise that this guide doesn’t cover EVERY single activity (like island tours and the walk inside the fortress for example), but after lots of research and traveling in the area, it’s how I personally believe you should spend your time if 2 days is all you have.

Must-Visit Rooftop Bars & Restaurants in Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia is full of culture, vibrant colors, flavorful food, & breathtaking scenery. It’s a travel & vacation hot-spot and there is no denying why.

The following rooftop bars & restaurants in Cartagena left me daydreaming about them after my trip. I definitely recommend adding these rooftops to your Cartagena, Colombia travel itinerary.

Mirador Gastro Bar
Mirador Gastro Bar is first on my list. Mirador’s food is out of this world. We ordered the “Trilogía de ceviches / Ceviches trilogy” and “Tacos de lomo.” Everything had so much flavor and was beautifully presented. The drinks are also really pretty and delicious. We ordered some Mojitos, Brambles, and Pisco Sour Clasicos. The cocktails are set beautifully with the backdrop of the walled city of Cartagena. Mirador overlooks Monumento Torre del Reloj, Cartagena’s emblematic Clock Tower. Mirador Gastro Bar’s level of service is also the best I think I‘ve received at a restaurant, & the vibe of Mirador Gastro Bar is simply perfect. They play great music, the design of the establishment is cute & chic, everyone is happy, it’s a great place to be. Mirador also has other floors that are equally as charming. I also enjoyed the first floor. Mirador has many photo opps including an adorable neon sign in a nook up the stairs that says “All I need is you love tonight”. I highly recommend checking it out during your visit to Cartagena.

Movich Hotel Rooftop
The Movich Hotel Rooftop is located atop Hotel Movich Cartagena De Indias, a stunning luxury accommodation belonging to the exclusive “Small Luxury Hotels of the World.” The Movich Hotel Rooftop is absolutely stunning, and provided me with the best sunset I’ve ever seen in my life. Movich Hotel Rooftop is an excellent vibe, with a nice floorplan layout and enjoyable upbeat tropical music. The food and drinks are delicious. I ordered a ceviche and sipped on a lychee martini and another pretty fruity cocktail while we waited for the sun to set. The sunset view from the Movich Hotel Rooftop is simply mind blowing. The way the sun shines over the water, reflects off the tall new-city skyscrapers in the background, accompanied by the old architecture of the walled-city in the foreground, and lights up the sky in bright-warm colors is a core memory that is forever painted in my mind.

Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop
Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is a vibrant & chic restaurant & bar in the walled city. We came at night and enjoyed some delicious food & unique libations. Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is known for its seafood, so I ordered the ceviche & it was wonderful. My favorite aspect of Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is the fun drinks we ordered. One was a sharable punchbowl that our server made in front of us with flames and sparklers coming out of the box - talk about presentation. The other was a delicious fruity cocktail that came in a huge conch shell. Buena Vida passes the vibe check with the great upbeat music they play. The view of the historic architecture is gorgeous at night.

Café del Mar
While Café del Mar might not be a “rooftop” per se, it definitely checks all the rooftop boxes as far as aesthetics. The coolest part of Café del Mar is its unique and historic location; situated on top of Murallas de Cartagena (the wall of Cartagena de Indias). Café del Mar is very popular for sunset with unobstructed views of the Caribbean Sea. We visited Café del Mar for a drink during twilight. I ordered the “Mezcalita” and it was delicious. After dinner, drinks, or whatever the day brings you, you can then take a walk around the historic structure of the City walls & explore the old cannons & iconic fortifications.

XO Rooftop Cartagena
We're catering more to the party side with this one; XO Rooftop Cartagena. This rooftop gives off a club vibe in an outdoor setting. We ordered some mojitos, Aguardiente, and hookah and enjoyed XO Rooftop Cartagena’s unique atmosphere. They played Reggaeton all night & have a cool light up DJ booth that displays music videos. I also love the neon signs. It wasn’t very crowded when we visited because it was a weekday, but XO Rooftop Cartagena is definitely a great place to go for nightlife in Cartagena.

Others…
Here are some other rooftops to add to your itinerary: 51 Sky Bar, Alquímico Rooftop, La Jugada Club House (Daisy the Rooftop), Townhouse Rooftop, Sophia Rooftop, Mar y Zielo, & Rooftop La Cata at Santa Catalina Hotel.

Be sure to add these rooftop bars & restaurants in Cartagena to your itinerary, and enjoy your trip to Colombia.

Isla de Providencia, Colombia: Explore Providencia Colombia's rustic Caribbean Island's best beaches

Just off the coast of Nicaragua, you'll find Colombia's best paradise beaches on Isla de Providencia, only accessible from San Andres Island. This is a video of our 4-day visit to Providence Island.

Take a look at our tour of the island of Providencia on a golf buggy to see the beaches on the island; an incredible trip over to Crab Cay, Cayo Cangrejo, to swim with wild turtles and look at the most turquise waters we've ever seen. We also stroll over 'Lover's Line' and take a walk around Santa Catalina island.

We flew with Satena on a 16 minute propeller plane from San Andres Island to Providencia. For full information on how to get there and what to do in Providencia, visit:
