Day 2 in Yunnan, China was one of the greatest days of Chinese food I’ve ever had. We started by visiting Weishan, Yunnan, China, an ancient village known for delicious noodles. Then we continued on to an ancient and well preserved Muslim village, and finally had an ethnic dinner back in Dali new town.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour (it’s not sponsored), but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
The first bowl of noodles was spectacular, a seperate bowl of noodles and a dipping soup of chili oil and pork. It was the perfect way to start a cold day in Yunnan, China.
Price - 11 RMB ($1.67) per bowl
Next we tried a Chinese street food snack that’s popular in Yunnan. A rice sheet is first grilled, then on went some pickles, peanuts, and a bunch of spices, and finally a Chinese donut was filled on the inside.
Price - 1 RMB ($0.15)
Entire bowl one noodle - Yes, the entire bowl of noodle was actually just one single noodle. It was one of the most fascinating to watch bowls ever. There’s a pan of coiled dough, which she expertly adds and stretches out as she boils it. You noodle gets cooked then topped with some vegetables and pork. It’s amazing to watch being made, and tastes delicious too.
Price - 8 RMB ($1.21)
Donglianhua (东莲花) Village - This is a well preserved ancient Muslim village, and Luxi brought us to a friend who is an outstanding cook with a gorgeous Chinese courtyard. She cooked one of the most amazing Halal beef salads I’ve ever had, plus Chinese Muslim noodles. Watching her cook everything from scratch and then eating in the courtyard environment was truly spectacular.
Xi Lian Shan (喜莲膳)
Total price - 120 RMB ($18.18)
Jingpo Yan Han Ren Jia (景颇岩罕人家) - Finally for dinner we drove back to Dali new town and ate dinner at a Jingpo restaurant, which is food from the border near Myanmar. The food was ate was not Chinese food like you would normally think, but more similar to Thai / Burmese or with Southeast Asian spices and flavors. It was an amazing meal to finish a fantastic Chinese street food tour day.
Total price - 200 RMB ($30.30)
This is Day 2 of our Chinese Food in Yunnan tour. Watch the full series here:

Short Visit || Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery(Siong Lim Temple)|| Iconic Temple in Singapore
Liang Shan Shuang Lin Monastery(Siong Lim Temple)
Established in 1912, Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery is the oldest Buddhist monastery in Singapore. The monastery includes the Hall of Celestial Kings (Tian Wang Dian) and Mahavira Hall (Da Xiong Bao Dian), both of which are gazetted as National Monuments for their historical and architectural value.
The origin of Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery can be traced to Hokkien merchant and community leader Low Kim Pong's meeting with 12 Buddhist monks and nuns in 1898. Low invited the Buddhists to stay in Singapore to spread the Buddhist faith. Low subsequently provided 50 acres of land for a monastery, and the Chinese community from other parts of Singapore also began raising funds for the monastery's construction.
Completed in the early 1900s, Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery (Twin Grove of the Lotus Mountain in Mandarin) adopted architectural styles of Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou in the Fujian province of China and these architectures reflect the diverse roots of the immigrant Chinese in Singapore.
The monastery was modelled after the fifth-century Yi Shan Xi Chan Monastery in Fuzhou. The bell and drum towers are possibly the only ones of their kind that still exist in Singapore, and enshrine the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Guan Gong respectively. For their historical and architectural value, the Halls of Celestial Kings and Mahavira Hall were gazetted as a National Monument in 1980. Today, Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery stands as Singapore’s oldest Buddhist monastery..

The Guan Yin Shrine at Singapore's Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery
A rainy visit to the Guan Yin shrine at Singapore's Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery. In Chinese Buddhism, Guan Yin (Kwan Yin) is one of the four Bodhisattva who, most commonly depicted in female form, is referred to as the Goddess of Mercy, or Goddess of Compassion. This Guan Yin statue is housed in Singapore's oldest monastery, which was built in the nineteenth century and later restored over the course of 11 years, beginning in 1991.

Its construction began in April 2002, and the opening ceremony took place on April 30, 2007, in which hundreds of Buddhist monks gathered. With thirteen floors and 153.79 m in height, it is the highest pagoda in the world and the tallest wooden structure in the world, surpassing the previous highest pagoda in China, the Liaodi Pagoda, built in 1055 with 84 m of height . Although the current pagoda was built in April 2007, the temple and pagoda grounds have a history of construction and destruction of 1350 years, from the time of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The construction of the pagoda was proposed by the Chinese Buddhist Association in 2001. However, donations of money for construction were an international effort. Leaders of 108 Buddhist associations and temples from around the world attended the temple's opening ceremony.
20. Putuo Zongcheng Temple (China)
The Putuo Zongcheng temple located in the town of Chengde, in the Chinese province of Hebei, is a Buddhist temple of the Qing Dynasty, built between 1767 and 1771 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. It is located near the Chengde mountain residence to the south. Together with the Puning Temple it is one of the eight outer temples of the city. It was built following the model of the Potala Palace, the ancient sanctuary of the Dalai Lama in Tibet, which is why it is sometimes called the small Potala. Its architecture is a mixture of Chinese and Tibetan styles. The temple covers an area of 220,000 m², which makes it one of the largest in China. Most of its rooms and pavilions are covered by roofs made with copper and gold which adds splendor to the place.
19. Temple of the Five Pagodas (China)
The Temple of the Five Pagodas, also known as the 'Precious Pagoda of the Buddhist Relics of the Diamond Throne' is a Buddhist temple in the city of Hohhot, in Inner Mongolia, in northwestern China. It is located in the old part of the city in the vicinity of Qingcheng Park. The construction of the temple began in 1727 and was completed in 1732. The distinctive five pagodas decorate a temple containing 1563 Buddha images carved into its walls, each slightly different from the others. Inside is a rare cosmological map of Mongolia carved into a large stone that illustrates the zodiac and the positions of numerous stars.
18. Yonghe Temple (China)
The Yonghe Temple (Palace of Peace and Harmony) is one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Beijing (China). It was established under the Qing dynasty. It is the most important temple and monastery in China of the Geluk order of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located in the northeastern part of Beijing, China. Although it fell a lot with the fall of the imperial patronage, it is still one of the most important temples of this order, at least at the architectural and iconographic level. The temple styles combine Tibetan elements (with Mongol influence) and Chinese elements (han).

Liang Shan Shuang Lin Monastery - Mid-autumn festival 2018
Visited Liang Shan Shuang Lin Monastery on 21 Sep 2018 for their Mid Autumn Festival event.
Between 1898 and 1908, the Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery rose amid the swamps and villages of Toa Payoh, a serene testament to inspired faith.
Translated into English, Lian Shan Shuang Lin means Twin Grove of the Lotus Mountain, and this Buddhist monastery is the oldest of its kind in Singapore. For their historical and architectural value, the Hall of Celestial Kings (Tian Wang Dian) and Mahavira Hall (Da Xiong Bao Dian) here were gazetted as national monuments in 1980.
The Guanyin Tang temple (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Guanyin Temple (Guanyintang in Chinese) is located in the south of Old Town of Dali, about 10 minutes' drive. Popularly enshrined and worshipped in Dali area, Guanyin has been regarded as a Patron God or Goddess of Bai minority. Buddhism in Dali could be taken as Yunnan Esoteric or Dian Mi, in which Guanyin is much more important than Buddha; experts referred to the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) there as Arcarya Guanyin (A Cuo Ye in Chinese) who is much slimmer than those elsewhere. It's even said that Pi Luoge, the founder of the Nanzhao Kingdom, had been nominated by Guanyin as the governor of the Six Tribes at that time. Among Buddhist temples in Dali, Guanyin temples or shrines are the majority, and Guanyin Tang or Guanyin Temple is the most famous one.

Singapore, an island city-state off southern Malaysia, is a global financial center with a tropical climate and multicultural population. Its colonial core centers on the Padang, a cricket field since the 1830s and now flanked by grand buildings such as City Hall, with its 18 Corinthian columns. In Singapore's circa-1820 Chinatown stands the red-and-gold Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, said to house one of Buddha's teeth.Other notable religious buildings include tranquil Lian Shan Shuang Lin Buddhist monastery, colourful Sri Mariamman Hindu temple and the massive Sultan Mosque. The neoclassical National Museum of Singapore contains exhibits on the city’s history and culture. There's shopping at the giant malls on Orchard Road and stylish boutiques in Kampong Glam. Sleek Marina Bay Sands SkyPark rises 200m above the water with sweeping city views. Little India offers colourful souvenirs. Arab Street is lined with fabric shops. Singapore is also known for an eclectic street-food scene, served up in Tiong Bahru and Maxwell Road.

Mixing things up a bit we decided to head out to an amazing nearby temple and monastery caklled Siong Lim, or also known as Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery 莲山双林寺. It is a Buddhist monastery located in Toa Payoh and well worth a visit for the rich cultural history and beautiful architecture.
Feeling well soaked up on culture, we needed to fill our bellies, so we headed to an amazing vegetarian restaurant called Lotus Vegetarian. We have been here a few times, but we really wanted to sample the dim sum, and it did not disappoint. The Lotus Vegetarian restaurant has some amazing food and in such a pretty environment. The flavours are also convincingly meaty with not any in sight.
